Jets take semi-final lead,
play at Centralia, Tuesday
Minor clubs open
Sham rock playoffs
The Lucan-Ildertort Jets.
wasted little time in showing
their playoff potential by
walloping the Elmira Polar Kings
7.2 in Centralia, Tuesday in the
first game of the Ontario
Hockey Association
Intermediate "B" western
grouping semi-final series.
The second game of the
best-of-seven series will be
played at Elmira, Friday night
with the third contest slated -for
the Centralia arena, Tuesday at
8: 30.
The Jets finished the regular
season with two consecutive
losses, their longest losing streak
of the year and ended in a tie
with the Durham Huskies for
first place.
The Durham club, now
playing the Seaforth Beavers in
the other semi-final set were
awarded first place on the
strength of a better goals
average.
When you leave a parking spot,
scout before you scoot.
In the busiest week of the
seheduie, the Jets downed the
Beavers 7.3 in Seaforth
Wednesday and then headed into
a losing skein. They were edged
5-3 by the Georgetown Raiders
in Georgetown, Friday and
succumbed 6.3 to the Durham
Huskies in Centralia, Sunday
afternoon.
NEIL NETS TWO
Bill Neil was the top Jet goal
producer in their 7.2 opening
playoff win over Elmira,
Tuesday,
Neil registered both his scores
in the first period to give his
club a 2-1 lead after the first
twenty minutes of play, Veteran
Ab Martin was the Elmira goal
getter,
The Jets upped their lead to
4-1 in the second and scored
three more times before Ken
Miller fired the final Elmira
counter with time running out in
the game.
Jack Nairn and Jamie Robb
were the Lucan—Ilderton scorers
in the second while Jacques
Cousineau, Larry Hossack and
Robb bulged the Elmira net in
the final frame.
DROP FINAL GAME
The inability to cash in on
numerous scoring chances,
especially early in the third
period cost the Jets the group
championship. They missed
many opportunities as they
dropped the last game of the
schedule to the Durham Huskies
6-3 at Centralia, Sunday.
Although the Jets scored the
first goal of the game from the
stick of Jacques Cousineau near
the three minute mark of the
opening period, they failed to
generate much of a scoring
attack.
Before the first twenty
minute session was history the
Huskies had banged in four goals
and were away and running.
Cecil Cowie, Dale Rahn, Bob
Bogdon and Jim Aitken were the
early marksmen for the Huskies.
The Jets came back with the
only two goals of the second
period and were back in
contention for a short period.
Ron Ryan and Ken Loft were on
the firing end of the successful
Lucan-Ilderton shots to bring
the score a little closer. Assists
on the two goals were credited
to Don Urbshott, Dusty Aldis
and Steve Storey.
After holding the Jets off the
score sheet in the early minutes
of the closing period, the
Huskies bounced back with a
couple of insurance counters,
both fired by Dale Rahn.
Coach Steve Storey was back
in an active playing capacity for
the first time since before
Christmas when he suffered a
shoulder separation. lie is
expected to be in the line-up for
the playoffs,
BLOW EARLY LEAD
In Georgetown Friday, the
Lucan-Ilderton boys were unable
to hold a one goal lead gained in
the first period and bowed to
the Raiders 5-3.
After Don Norton put the
home club in front at 3:45 of
the opening session, the Jets
bounced back with Jamie Robb
and Barry Hearn finding the
scoring mark.
In the second period, Paul
Robinson counted on a power
play to put Georgetown back on
even terms. It took the Raiders
less than three minutes in the
third period to change the
complexion of the game with
Blake Ingles and Jack Gudgeon
scoring.
Paul Lavelle scored at 11:21
to put the home town team in
front by three goals and Ken
Loft fired the last Jet goal with
only three seconds remaining.
The game was rough from
start to finish with a total of 16
penalties being called. Paul
Robinson and Bob Rogers of
Georgetown were each tagged
for misconducts while Jack
Nairn of the L-I club received a
game misconduct and Bev
Urbshott was assessed a major
penalty,
LATE SPURT HELPS
In Seaforth Wednesday, four
goals in the third period enabled
the Jets to gain a 7-3 win over
the Beavers, The Jets took a one
goal lead in the first period and
were able to maintain the same
margin after forty minutes of
pla Although, the Beavers tied
the count momentarily in the
last period, the Jets broke away
with the four goal splurge.
Ron Ryan's wrist shot from
about 20 feet out was the only
drive to find the Seaforth cage in
the first period. In the second
Jamie Robb registered on a hard
slap shot along the ice and Ron
Ryan ran the score to 3-0 on a
breakaway at 6:05.
Before the second frame
came to a close, Jack McIlwain
and Paul Rau had scored for
Seaforth. Ken Doig tied the
score at 3.3 with a goal at 1:15
of the final session.
Less than a minute later,
Robb scored on a 20-footer to
put the Jets in front to stay.
Barry Ream, Jack Nairn and
Jacques Cousineaucompleted the
Lucan-Ilderton scoring with
singles scores.
A total of 14 penalties were
meted out with fighting majors
going to Ken Loft of the Jets
and Bob Beutenmiller of the
Beavers.
The first games of the
Shamrock minor playoffs
involving teams from Exeter and.
Lucan were played Wednesday
night.
In the opening game of the
night the two pee wee clubs
llayed to a 2.2 all tie while the
.1xeter midgets gained a 4-0
decision over Lecart. In an
exhibition tilt, Lucan bantams
