Exeter pair
visit Mexico
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Huntley,
Exeter, have been learning a
great deal about the history,
lolitics and geography of
Mexico in recent weeks from
correspondence received from
their son, Doug:
Doug has been in Mexico for
over four months and has been
studying and travelling
throughout much of the
country.
The letter also gave a
description of the house in
which he is presently living with
a Mexican family. It says:
"The house is very Mexican
and different from anything I
have lived in yet. The plumbing
consists of a tap in the yard with
a garden hose attached. Only
two of the rooms have tiled
floors, the rest being dirt. For
some reason I don't miss modern
conveniences (except maybe a
hot shower once in a while).
The house is not really a
house at all, but a group of
bedrooms with open air hallways
between. The dining-living room
is an open porch with a roof.
The yard is very large - dirt,
not grass - and has banana trees
(pick your own) and coffee
plants (Sra. Moreno dries and
grinds her own). There is also a
spice and herb garden.
Beside the tap I mentioned is
a large flat stone where Sra.
Moreno does her washing in that
good old-fashioned Mexican
way. There is an electric stove in
The 18th annual ice carnival
presented by the Exeter Figure
Skating Club at the Exeter
arena, Saturday night was a huge
success and gave the spectators
in attendance a glimpse of better
things to come.
Entitled "Spring Time '69",
the show displayed robins, April
showers, honey bees, buttercups
and butterflies to put the more
than 800 fans in the mood for
spring,
All of the 110 members of
the club from Exeter, Hensall,
Dashwood, Crediton and
surrounding territory
participated in at least one
number. Club professional Mrs.
Faye MacDonald was in charge
of the colorful production.
Guest skaters Judy Currah
and Keith Caughell entertained
twice during the evening. The St.
Thomas pair are Western Ontario
novice dance champions.
Local club members Cathy
Holtzmann , Brenda Jean
Brintnell, Launa Fuller and
Brenda Marie Brintnell
performed solo numbers.
At the conclusion of the
program, two of the youngest
the kitchen but Sra. Moreno still
does most of her cooking over
an open fire. The smoke escapes
through openings at the top of
the bamboo walls. She uses
pottery pots, plates, etc. and the
pottery is magnificent.
All of this seems so natural to
me down here that I wonder
how it will feel to live in a house
with four walls again.

To counteract the OMEA
executive proposal, the area
Commissioners had prepared a
brief which was sent to
McKeough, as well as the Hon.
C. S. and the Hon. W
The brief pointed out that
regional control of utilities could
result in poorer service for
customers as well as jeopardizing
jobs of present PUC employees.
It was pointed out that many
of the area communities become
isolated in snow storms and
"disastrous results" could follow
if communities were dependent
upon outside staff as opposed to
their present local staff.
The brief went on to note
that the announcement of
regional government has had a
disturbing influence on
employees because many see
their jobs in jeopardy as they are
not experts in either water or
hydro - although they have
sufficient knowledge in both
fields to perform well in a small
Utility. (It was felt that with a
regional control the trend would
be to specialists in the two
fields, as opposed to men
qualified to perform in both.)
"If these employees decide to
obtain other work during the
transition to regional
government the operation of a
Utility could become extremely
difficult," the brief added.
Reid told the meeting the
intention is that under regional
government no present
employee should lose his job.
He said there was nothing in
the regional government
proposal that would prohibit a
system similar to that followed
by small Utilities.
The brief also said that "as
the government plans regarding
this matter (future of
Commissions) is not known it is
placing our operation in a
position of not being able to
make any long range plans
pertaining to provision for funds
for future equipment, buildings
and hydro and water
installations. You will appreciate
that an efficient operation

many predictions were being
made -as to when regional
government may be enacted.
He said department officials
have varied in their predictions
anywhere from five to 15 years
and noted this was a difficult
basis on which to plan .any major
expenditures.
