President Mrs, Frank Hardy Sr, took the chair. There were 13 members present, two visitors and a guest speaker, Mrs. Harry S trang of Exeter, area resolutions convener. Memories were stirred as the roll call was answered by the ladies completing the sentence, "M Mother said — ." Mrs, Frances Saward gave a resume of the papier mache course that she and Mrs. M.H. Hodgins had attended. Mrs. Hardy read a poem and made a few remarks on the motto "Life is like a bank account — add to it each day." It was an introduction to Mrs. Helen Carling's reading on the same subject. It was reported that arrangements were under way to have the W.I. District Annual at Lucan United Church. Mrs. Saward was elected as delegate to the Officers' Conference at Guelph University April 30 — May 1, Mrs. Strang gave a very interesting talk on, "Resolutions," a subject of vital concern, especially to women's organizations. She explained why resolutions were so ANGLICAN Lenten Service was held by Rev. R.A, Carson at Holy Trinity Church, Lucan, last Wednesday evening. Sunday morning service was in the charge of Rev. R.A. Carson, the title of his sermon being, "What do we believe?" Members of C.G.I.T. and Explorers with their leaders were guests for this service. LEAGUE OF LOYALTY The following have earned their fourth star (that's perfect attendance at Church since November): Steven Revington, Cheryl Hardy, Tim Culbert, Bill Carson, John Henderson, Karen Henderson, Bill Henderson and Holly Elson. Lynn Stanley is a third star and Ricky Freeman is a second star. First stars are Becky McTaggart, Jeff McTaggart, Bill Lewis, Sandra Avery, Cheryl Davis, Jane Hardy, Linda Kraul, Roger Lewis, Michael Stanley, Faron Sovereign, Ferlin Sovereign. On Ash Wednesday the Sunday School children attended a special service concerning the Genesis story of creation told by record and flannel graph. UNITED At the close of the Sunday School at the Lucan United Church, one member of each of the families attending, was given a copy of Parenttalk. This was done With the hope that parents will read, and get some help with the problems of their children. The first copies will be distributed free of charge, but it is hoped that many will find enough of interest, to order the magazine regularly. Rev. W.C. Tupling was in charge of the Sunday morning service. His sermon continued the series on the Beatitudes, "The Happiness of the Pure in Heart." There were 19 in attendance last Friday at the Youth Church Membership Class, and Mr. Tupling invited any other young person over 14 years of age to attend next Friday at 7 p.m. These meetings will be held for six Fridays. Next Sunday Heintzman's important, some having far-reaching consequences. Mrs. Snelgrove having recently been appointed District Resolutions convener, was particularly interested, and Mrs. Strang was able to explain her responsibilities to her. Mrs. Burns Smith expressed the members' thanks to Mrs, Strang for her visit, and for enlightening the ladies on a subject which had puzzled most of them for some time. BY J.E. BURT In the South Middlesex Hockey League with two games for each team to go, first place is clinched by Lambeth with second, third and fourth places undecided, as two points separate Concrete Pipe, Esquire Hotel and London Motor Products. Ailsa Craig holds down fifth spot, Lucan sixth and Ilderton last. Ailsa Craig and Lucan will go a four out of seven series for the President's trophy, with the top will demonstrate an electric organ during the service, and the committee hopes to have a large congregation, and that they will give their opinion of its performance. There was a very good attendance at the Lucan United Church Couples' Club regular meeting last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Barr led the worship and Stewart McLellan read the scripture. Bob Patterson introduced Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hardy who showed slides taken on their trip to South America. The local couple gave a talk on this subject. April "Fun night" has been postponed as it was proposed to invite the Anglican Church Couples' Club for the meeting. Lunch was served by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Barr, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart McLellan and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Patterson. The Friendship U.C.W. Unit had a very successful coffee party last Tuesday. There were many young mothers in attendance and the nursery was very busy as expected. PENTECOSTAL Wednesday evening service was not held at Lucan Pentecostal Church last week, but instead, members of the Church visited parents of Sunday School children, Sunday services were conducted by a guest speaker, John Harrington of Toronto, in the absence of Rev. Gordon McDonald. 4-H girls make meat surprise Lucan 4-H club held their second and third meetings at the arena with 21 members and two leaders, Mrs. R.B. Worthington and Mrs. Lorne Mohr. Jane Hodgson has been appointed president, and Kathryn Worthington, secretary. The girls made a hamburg surprise and a salmon casserole, salads and cream of tomato soup. They have nicknamed their group "Lucan's Luscious Left-overs," lunch was served by Mrs. Snelgrove assisted by Mrs. Smith. Next meeting will be March 27 at the Lucan United Church. This will be a short meeting, followed at 8 p.m. by a talk on safety by Mrs. Saward, a demonstration of hazards, and a film. This programme is intended for the public and everyone will be welcome. There will also be a display of work by •1-11 members. four teams battling it out for the "A" and "B" trophies. Lu can Minor Hockey Teams in the Shamrock League played their final games of this schedule in Lucan last Friday night playing Exeter. The Pee Wees tied 1 - 1, the Bantams won 4 — over the Exeter (B) team and the Midgets went down 4 — 3. Saturday night dances started last Saturday again and will be on every Saturday night 9 — 12 p.m. to the music of the San-Am-Tones. The Lions House league hockey has one more Saturday to go to finish up their schedule and then they will hold a family play-off night. This will be decided later, when ice becomes available. In the Shamrock Novice League last Saturday, Lucan clinched first place with a win over Lambeth 3 — 2. In other games it was Exeter 5, Stoneybrook 3 and Dorchester over Ilderton 4 — 0 in the final game. We have a 12-game pee wee tournament here at the centre this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. I'm sure that there will be some fine hockey played during the day. The following Saturday will finish the novice schedule — then a round robin series will go for the play-offs. See you at the games. JUNIOR FARMERS' HOCKEY At the Junior Farmers' hockey tournament at Listowel last Saturday, Middlesex Junior Farmers' team brought home the "A" Trophy. Twelve teams competed. LUCAN HORSEMANSHIP CLUB At the meeting of the Lucan Horsemanship Club last Friday, the following officers were elected: President, Jim Simpson; vice-president, Dr. John Brown; secretary treasurer, Mrs. Betty Stilson; executive, Rudy Engel. Mr. & Mrs. Ron Haynes and family visited Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Harry Hera and family. Orville Snell, Grimsby, visited Sunday with Mrs. Ephriam Hem. Mrs. Ross Hern, Detroit, is spending a few days at her home. Mr. & Mrs. Jim Kirton, Petrolia, were weekend visitors with Mr. & Mrs. Lorne Hera. Mr. & Mrs. Tom Hem Jr. visited Sunday evening with Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Hem, London. Mr. & Mrs. Harry Hern, Mr. & Mrs. Bob Hem and families and Mrs. John Selves, Exeter, were Sunday guests with Mr. & Mrs. Harold Hem. Several girls become seniors Lucan-Clandeboye C,G.1,T, held their meeting February 18. Judy Froats, Nancy Simpson and Kathryn Worthington received their white lanyards, and now become seniors. They were presented by Mrs. R.B. Worthington, Mrs. Clare Stanley and Grace Smith. Three groups of girls were then formed, the first group to study and discuss under their leader, Mrs. Worthington, "Social Values, and Moral Issues." The second group took Bible Study with Mrs. Clare Stanley. The third group learned liquid embroidery with Mrs. M.H. Hodgins and Mrs. F. Saward. Three leaders and several of the girls attended Sunday morning service, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. With only three games remaining in the regular schedule of the Central Division of the Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate "B" league, Barry Hearn appears to be a sure winner in the individual scoring 11 llllllllllll 1 lllllll 1111111111111111111111 lllll 111111 llllllllllll Lucan personals Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Elder spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Wilbert Stanley. Mrs. Elder will stay with Mrs. Stanley while her husband is in hospital for a few days. Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Hill and daughter Christine, formerly of Calgary and now at Delhi, were weekend visitors of Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Brooks. Eldon Bullock of the University of Waterloo spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Russell Thompson and family. Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Stanley and Mr. & Mrs. W.W. Garrett have returned from a trip south. Among many places they visited were the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Anaheim, Disneyland, New Orleans and L.B. Johnson's ranch. They visited Dr. & Mrs. Walter Rice, Arizona and Mrs. Jack Sproule, Oklahoma, Santiago, Yuma, staying a few days at each. They also took a tour in Mexico. Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Tupling from Grand Valley and Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Wood from Bellwood, Mrs. Ruth Duncan and Mrs. Shirley Brown from Stratford were Sunday visitors with Rev. & Mrs. W.C. Tupling. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott were Monday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Mervin Elston of Centralia. Mrs. Jim Mugford last Friday entertained with a dinner in honour of her father, Murray Abbott, who celebrated his birthday. Guests included Mr. & Mrs. Mervin Elston of Centralia. Saturday Mr. Abbott had his second celebration at his son Don's home when Mrs. Abbott had a special birthday dinner for him. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Mueller, Debbie and Michael of Waterford, were Saturday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Ron Crozier. Mr, & Mrs. Bill Neil, Michael and Stephen of London have moved into the home recently vacated by Wesley Phair. Mr. & Mrs, Allen Tindall of Wiarton were weekend guests of Mr, & Mrs. Cliff Abbott. They brought back to Listowel, Miss Sophie Richards (formerly of Lucan) who had spent a week with them in Wiarton. Mrs, Lela Beadle of Stratford is spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. Eldon Hodgson of Alice St. Both attended the Robinson-Hodgson wedding in the Brinsley United Church Saturday. Larry Ditty of the Lucan Electronics, called at the McCormick Home last Saturday. Mrs. Clifford McLean was a Tuesday guest of Miss May Daniels of London. Mr. & Mrs. Earl Atkinson and Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott were Wednesday dinner guests of Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Greenlee of Exeter. Ron Crozier has been appointed Assistant District Commissioner of the Arva Pony Club. Miss Angela Aunt I t of London was a guest of Mrs. William Hackett last Sunday. Bert Bissett of Exeter was a Thursday visitor with Mr. & Mrs. A.M. Redden, The Medway Concert Band was one of the 10 bands which competed in Kiwanis Festival last Saturday. Mike Culbert and Jane Hodgson represented Lucan. Medway placed second. Mert Culbert, who has been off work with an infected eye since September is at, last hack to work, Bride-elect is honored Miss Cathy Hodgson, daughter of Arthur Hodgson, now of Strathroy, and the late Mrs. Hodgson, was honoured with two pre-nuptial events, prior to her marriage in the Brinsley United Church February 22 to Allen Robinson of Forest. A large miscellaneous shower sponsored by the church and community was held at the church and another shower was held by the bride-elect's friend, Miss Carol Trevithick of Ailsa Craig, The bride is the granddaughter of Mrs. Eldon Hodgson of Alice St. Lucan. Budd° 0 1 1 Commander post for Legion man At the Legion's Zone A5 convention in Allan Craig last Thursday evening, Bill Smith of Branch 540 in Lucan was elected to the post of deputy zone commander. Mr. Smith, a past president of the Lucan branch, adds this job to his already busy Legion schedule. Besides serving on the branch executive, he is also service officer and public speaking chairman, Tom Healey, Strathroy, was returned for another term as zone commander. Ron Nash and the Country Tones played their first engagement at the Lucan Legion last Saturday evening and made quite a hit. These regular Saturday night socials are becoming a popular event in Lucan and over 60 people spent an enjoyable evening of dancing, singing and handclapping. Carl Stuckless and his committee were in charge of the lunch. Harry Bond and friend fingersnapped their way through an oldtime favorite. A St. Patrick's dance is being planned by the Lucan Legion. BILL SMITH Middlesex County Junior Farmers held their annual, banquet and dance last Friday in Thorndale Community Centre with an attendance of about 250. The following officers were elected and inducted by the Rev. Punter, Thorndale: Hon. Presidents, W.J. and Mrs. W.W. Garrett; Past President, Ron Abbott; President,Doreen Crawford; first vice-president, Michael O'Shea; second vice-president, Mary 13radish; secretary, Carol Watchorn; treasurer, Gerald Johnson; and pproonvivaol i incia i .llian director by acclamation for the second time, A most impressive candle-lighting ceremony was started by W.A. Stewart, Provincial Agriculture Minister lighting the first candle, the Provincial Director then lit a candle for each county officer for 1969. Miss Crawford followed by lighting a candle for each of the nine club presidents in the county. This was arranged to impress upon the Junior Farmers that they are members of a large and far-reaching organization. Ron Abbott gave a retiring speech and Miss Crawford an initiation speech. A number of the guests brought greetings from members of their organizations. Some of the guests were, W.A. Stewart, Ontario Minister of Agriculture; R. McDougal, Federation of Agriculture; Sandy Forsyth, Ralph Winslade and Alan Orr from the Middlesex Agricultural Department. Mr. McDougal presented books to winners of the County Debaters' Competition, Marilyn Moore, Ron Winter, Alfred Ovens and Jim Reith. Thorndale won all three points system award, which was presented by Michael O'Shea. Attendance award was presented to Carol Watchorn, Thorndale, by Mr. Riddell. Thorndale also won the Junior Farmers' participation award sponsored by Scotch Fertilizers, Kerwood, and presented by Don MacMillan. Entertainment was provided by Nora Bradish and Judy Maddren. Mrs. W.W. Garrett presented the Past President pin to Ron Abbott. DRAMA CLUB Junior Farmers' Drama Festival was held Wednesday of last week. Thorndale Club won with the play, "Through a Glass Darkly." Best actor award went to Gerald Adlington, Thorndale, in this play. Best actress award was won by Eleanor Walker, Edgewood, in the play put on by the Edgewood Club, "The Dear Departed." The adjudicator was Jay Fayer.
