were conducted at Varna. Mr. 8z
Mrs. Lloyd Bender attended.
If you've any busy little bees
around your house — say from
age four to six years — then you
know how exciting parties can
be, and what a long time it can
seem between them. So Mom,
you'll be much appreciated if
you turn the regular afternoon
milk and cookies session into a
party occasion February 14.
(You might even like to
adopt some of these ideas for a
future birthday party!)
To make it a real event, you
will need decorations, That
always puts everybody in a
festive mood. Our picture shows
a red and white striped cloth
(you can use wrapping paper.
The kids won't mind and it is
disposable in case of spills.)
Bright red crepe paper has been
twisted into streamers for the
table and red construction paper
heart and cupid cut-outs have
been fastened hither and thither
all over the table cloth.
Food is another important
factor. We have the recipes for
the filled heart cookies and the
whipped cream topped 'pink'
milk pictured here — as well as a
few bonus recipes you might like
to try out on your young fry.
And that's really about all
you need. The children will
make their own fun if you
provide the setting.
21/2 cups sifted all-purpose▪ flour
2 cups sifted icing sugar
2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon
hot milk
2 tablespoons soft butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
red food coloring
For the Cookies:
Cream the 1 cup butter;
gradually beat in the 1/3 cup
milk. Add flour to creamed
mixture, part at a time, blending
in well after each addition. Wrap
dough in waxed paper and chill
several hours. Preheat oven to
375 degrees F. Roll chilled
dough out to 1/8-inch thickness
on lightly-floured board or
canvas. Cut into assorted sized
heart shapes using cookie cutters
or cardboard patterns. Place on
cookie sheet and prick with
fork. Bake in preheated oven 12
to 15 minutes. Remove from
cookie sheets and cool on cake
racks. Put cookies together with
filling.
For the Filling:
Blend together sugar, the hot
milk, the 2 tablespoons butter,
vanilla, peppermint extract and
food coloring. Beat until smooth
and creamy.

I want to take this
opportunity to congratulate the
South Huron Association for the
Mentally Retarded on the choice
of a name for their school at
Huron Park.
"Huron Hope" is a
marvellous name and denotes
the kind of courage this group
has shown in its struggle to
provide something more for the
mentally handicapped in this
district.
Enrolment at Huron Hope
has now jumped to six and it is
still hoped that more parents of
mentally retarded children will
see the advantages to avail
themselves of the facilities for
their children.
The days are rapidly fleeting
when these youngsters are
forced to live in the shadows.
Many can be trained to become
useful citizens fully integrated
into society.
Huron Hope is a stepping
stone to greater happiness for
these young boys and girls. If
you want to know more about
it, get in touch with Ivan
Sharrow at Dashwood; Mrs. Lee
Dobbs in Exeter; or Mrs. C.L.
Smith, also of Exeter. They'll be
glad to fill you in on all the
details.
Actually I'm not much of a
cook, But occasionally I come
up with something that not only
passes the taste-testing of family
and friends it makes a hit.
That's the way it was this
past weekend with a recipe I
found for date loaf. A few ladies
asked how to make it, so here's
the Method I used.
