For the first time in the history of the Exeter
curling club, no less than three local representatives will
be competing in provincial curling finals in the next
couple of weeks.
Of immediate interest Jim Hewitt and his Exeter
rink are representing district 13 in the British Consols
playdowns at the Ivanhoe in London this week.
The winner of this competition will represent
Southern Ontario at the McDonald Brier, the Canadian
National curling championship tourney to be held in
Oshawa in March,
The eventual Canadian winner advances to the
World championships to be held in Scotland,
The Hewitt rink that includes Jim Finnen and
Bob and Paul Coates played their first two rounds in
London yesterday, Wednesday and will be continuing
today if they were successful in winning at least one of
their first two contests.
Paul Coates, who is the lead curler for the Hewitt
aggregation is a replacement for vice-skip Gerry Finnen
who is unable to participate in the London event
because of previous business commitments. Bob Coates
the original second man on the rink has moved up to
take over the vice-skip duties and Jim Finnen steps up
to second.
The Ivanhoe event has drawn some of the top
names in curling in Ontario. Included on the list are
Alfie Phillips of Toronto, Dr. Don Gilbert, Ken Buchan
and Joe Girowka.
The London curling rink has a seating capacity in
excess of 750 and admission is free to the four day
event. We expect to attend one or two of the games to
cheer our local representatives on.
The second group of male curlers, headed by Lee
Webber are in the Ontario Massey -Ferguson final at
Brampton on February 12 and 13 against five other
rinks from the province.
Included on the Webber rink are Gord McCarter,
Lloyd Ballantyne and Ross Hodgert. If the locals are
successful in capturing the Brampton event they get an
all-expense trip to the Canadian final in Calgary,
The Webber aggregation earned the right to the
provincial championship by taking the district title in
St. Marys a week ago.
To round out what seems to be a perfect season,
Helen Burton takes her rink to the Ontario Ladies
provincial championship in Toronto on February 23.
With the help of her team-mates, Ellen Knight,
Pauline Simmons and Lois Learn, Burton wrapped up
the district 3 championship a few weeks ago.
The ladies are not quite as fortunate as their male
counterparts as they do not advance to a Canadian final,
even if they win the title in Toronto.
A recent break from the Canadian Women's
Curling Federation does not allow the Ontario winner to
advance in further competition.
We would like to wish all three Exeter rinks the
best of luck in their bid for provincial and dominion
championships. Their showing this, year in district play
certainly points up the excellent calibre of curling being
turned in at the local rink.
Skating Carnival Coming
Plans for the annual carnival of the Exeter Figure
Skating Club are being quickly formulated by club
officials. The always popular event will be held at the
Exeter arena on Saturday, February 22 at eight o'clock.
Entitled "Spring Time '69", the show will feature
all of the more than 100 young skaters under the
direction of club pro, Mrs. Faye McDonald.
Highlighting the event will be the appearance of a
novice dance pair from St. Thomas Judy Carrah and
Keith Caughell.
