A rink skipped by Jim Hewitt of the local club has won the British Consols district 13 championship and will meet winners from 15 other districts in Southern Ontario for the right to participate in the McDonald Brier championships to be held in Oshawa in March. The Hewitt rink comprising Gerry and Jim Finnen and Bob Coates will be competing at the Ivanhoe Curling club in London starting February 5 against outstanding curlers from other districts. Included in the men's playoffs will be former Ontario champs, Alfie Phillips, Bob Mann and Ken Buchan. Each team will play twice each day at one and seven o'clock with elimination coming with the second defeat. The Ivanhoe club has a seating capacity of 750 and admission is free for the four day competition. Hewitt's rink eliminated Murray Thompson of Chesley in a special two-out-of-three playoff in Hanover, Sunday to advance to the Ontario playoff. A valuable member of the local rink, Gerry Finney maybe forced to miss the London event because of business commitments. If this happens, he will be replaced by another member of the local men's league. Not to be outdone by the men, a ladies' rink headed by Helen Burton will be off to Toronto on February 23 to compete in the Southern Ontario Ladies' provincial playoffs. The local rink that includes Ellen Knight, Lois Learn and Pauline Simmons earned the right to travel to Toronto by taking the district 3 championship in Seaforth by winning five of six games. The Exeter rink will arrive in Toronto on Sunday, February 23 to attend a reception for competitors and draw of the events and will begin four days of play the following day.
