E, building of the Lucan United Church with an attendance of 32 girls and four leaders, Mrs, William Froats, Mrs. Ross McRoberts, Mrs. Keith Kraul and Mrs. Don O'Neill. Linda Kraut conducted the opening ceremony. To earn their second stars, the gold girls are to read a book about China and tell about an interesting part of it; red and blue girls are to memorize "My Father's World" and "Master of the Loving Heart." An are to participate actively in the new exploration, "Toward understanding China and the Chinese people." Four groups were formed for research on Chinese family life led by Mrs. McRoberts; a day in the life of a Chinese child, Mrs. Mr. & Mrs. Alec Young were guests at a birthday party for their granddaughter, Tammy, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ross McRoberts. Mrs. Albert Cowan, wife of the late Mr. Cowan, a former Lucan Constable has moved back to Lucan from Wingham and is now living with her son in the Ross Holden apartment. Mr. & Mrs. Harold Corbett were dinner guests with Mr. & Mrs. Alex Young last Friday night. Mr. & Mrs. Ray Fischer, Mrs. William Snell, Mrs. Joseph Mordush, Sharlene, Mrs. Loraine Fischer, Kennon and Jamie were Sunday guests of Mrs. Katherine Fischer. Mr. & Mrs. Robert Coughlin and Mrs. Erie Young have returned from a holiday at St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. T. A. Watson and George Miller are both home after a short time in St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott were Monday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Elston of Centralia. Rev. R. A. Carson of Holy Trinity Church called on Miss Lina Abbott last Monday. Mr. & Mrs. Norman Schell and family of Shakespeare were Sunday guests of Mrs. Jane Somerville. Don Abbott entered Sholdice Hospital, Toronto, last Sunday and underwent surgery on Tuesday. He is making satisfactory recovery and plans to recuperate with his brother, William and family of Niagara Falls before returing. Mrs. Abbott and three friends visited him in the hospital the day of his operation. Miss Lina Abbott was one of those taken to see "Bye-bye Birdie" at the South Secondary School last Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. Earl Atkinson and Mrs. Bob Coleman were Tuesday guests of Mrs. Richard Dickens of Exeter. Mrs. Sheridan Revington and Mrs. John Park called on friends in the McCormick Home Wednesday. Raymond Lewis, RR 1 Denfield, reeve of Lobo Township, was elected Middlesex County warden for 1969 last Tuesday. Among the other contestants was Wilson Hodgins of RR 1 Lucan, reeve of Biddulph Township. By MRS. J, H. PATON CLANDEBOYE Clandeboye WI met at the home of Mrs. Omar and Roy Cunningham with 13 members and one visitor present. Mrs. Alex Macintosh read the scripture from Proverbs. Business was conducted by president Mrs. Arnold Lewis. The motion was passed to continue to sponsor the foster child from Italy. Mrs. D. Kestle, in charge of program, gave a paper dealing with Human Rights. Mrs. Karl O'Neil read an article about the rights of the illegitimate child being impaired when the child is born. The contest to name Indian tribes was won by Mrs. R. Neil. The February meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Alan Hill on February 12. PERSONALS Mr, & Mrs. Arnold Lewis entertained Sunday for Arnold Lewis and his mother, Mrs. Ernest Lewis of London at a birthday celebration. Other guests were Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Lewis and Mr. & Mrs. Philip Lewis. Mr, & Mrs. Jim Donaldson, Joan, June and Cindy, attended a birthday party for Teresa who was two years old Sunday at the home of Mr, & Mrs. Jim McCarthy. Mrs. Kurt Gebel is improving at home, She has been sick with the flu. Her daughter Susan is back to school. Kraut; communes, a large group of people who live and work together, Mrs. O'Neill; and Old China versus New China led by Mrs. Froats. A display table featured maps and books on China, with pictures, a blue willow-pattern plate etc. Members were asked to bring pictures of China to make a poster, or any books, including library books, they can find for the next meeting. "Did you know?" three interesting facts about China were given by Sheila Smith, Kathy Hearn and Karen Mason. This will be a feature of future expeditions, as will Chinese proverbs which will be on display, Examples of proverbs are "When passing through your' neighbor's melon patch, don't After two months in St. Joseph's Hospital, Art Morgan was able to come home last Wednesday, but reports it will be some time yet before he can take over the mail route. Mrs. John McLean has given up her position in Toronto, and is at present in her home on Main St. South, Lucan. Last Friday Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott visited the latter's sister, Mrs. Harry Carroll who is undergoing tests in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. H. A. Mullins, after three weeks, in Victoria Hospital following surgery, was able to return home Friday. Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Hodgson, Cathy and George of Strathroy and Mr. & Mrs. William Rock and David of Ailsa Craig were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Eldon Hodgson, the occasion being George's 16th birthday. Mrs. W. W. Garrett last Friday phoned her daughter, Mrs. Don McTaggart, announcing her safe arrival in California. With her are her husband and Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Stanley. Former resident buried in West Miss Jean Ann Topp, 94, of Tweedsmuir Hall, London, who died in St. Joseph's Hospital last Saturday was interred in Eston, Sask. with the Needham Funeral Home in charge of London service. Miss Topp has no immediate survivors. A retired teacher, Miss Topp, boarded for years with Miss Elizabeth Ryan, a Lucan district native, while teaching in Calgary. The two became close friends, so on retiring, Miss Topp followed Miss Ryan to Alice St., Lucan, and again made her home with her, until Miss Ryan's death. Since then Miss Topp spent a number of years in London. Miss Topp was well known in Lucan and made a number of friends there. If two friends ask you to judge a dispute, don't accept, for you will lose a friend. If two strangers ask you to judge a dispute, accept, you will gain a friend. Rev. W.C. Tupling conducted the service at Clandeboye United Church where the choir sang an African hymn "Kumbayah" with Miss Kathryn Worthington at the piano. Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred Cunningham had their daughter and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Harper and family as visitors Sunday. On Monday, visitor with the Cunninghams was their son, Joe. Roy Lynn is improving and has had the cast removed from his arm. Mr. & Mrs, Wilfred Logan, Thorndale, visited with Mrs. J.H. Paton Sunday. .Y.. Mrs. Froats installed new officers: chief explorer, Janice Walker; assistant chief explorer, Rita Densmore; keeper of treasure, June Donaldson. Closing ceremony was conducted by the new chief explorer, Janice Walker. Next expedition will be held February 3. Members are asked to bring pencils and be prepared to answer questions on facts learned at this meeting. Bantam tourney set for Saturday By J. E. BURT In minor hockey Friday night it was Dorchester versus Lucan. Pee Wee's were Lucan 5, Dorchester 4. Lucan came from behind to score two goals in the last five minutes to win. Bantams lost to Dorchester 5-2. Midgets scored 12 to Dorchester's 2. Lucan really ran away in the second period when they scored eight goals. In Shamrock Novice Hockey, in the first game it was Stoneybrook 2, Ilderton no score. In the second game it was Lucan 5, Exeter 2. The third game was Lambton 7, Dorchester 1. Saturday dances will be discontinued until another band can be engaged. Bantam Shamrock Hockey Tournament will be Saturday, February 1 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be 12 games and admittance will be 50 cents. ORANGEMEN'S EUCHRE The first meeting of the year was held at the Orange Lodge Wednesday of last week with five tables in play. High score prizes were won by Mrs. Joe Carter and Thomas Emery; lone hands by Mrs. Wilson Hodgins and Mrs. Harvey Hodgins. Mrs. Gordon Atkinson received a box of groceries in the draw. The club will play again February 5. Granton man passes away Glenn Jameson, aged 53 of Granton died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital. He is survived by his wife, the former Amelia Hardie; one son, Donald at home; one daughter Mrs. Charles (Joan) Hayden of Granton; one brother, James of London; two sisters, Mrs. Austin (Sadie) Hobbs of Granton. and Mrs. Donald (Evelyn) Kelly of Rochester, New York; and one grandchild. Funeral service Monday was conducted by the Rev. Susan Seymour at the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home. Interment was in Granton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Don Dean, Jim Riddell, William German, Lloyd Mardlin, Tom Ross and Garfield Nixon. Flowerbearers were "Bubs" Jameson, Bob Hardie, Bob Pincombe, Cliff Hardie, Cliff Cook, Doug Heard, Bill Dykes, Bill Egan, Pat Hardie, John Hariton and Ken Mulholland. 4-H leader at training school Mrs. R. B. Worthington attended a two-day training school at the new Union Gas building in London, to prepare herself for teaching a series of cookery lessons to the 4-H members. Mrs. Lorne Mohr was unable to attend owing to illness, but will assist Mrs. Worthington with the lessons. Clandeboye 4-1-1 members will work at Lucan Arena from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon and Lucan 4-H members from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, commencing February 8. There are 19 Lucan members and 13 from Clandeboye. For Achievement Day, Lucan members will have an exhibit of a buffet table setting for a special occasion, and Clandeboye members will demonstrate the preparation of a meatless main dish. Church service at St. Patrick's Anglican Church was cancelled owing to a sudden death in the family of the rector's wife, Mrs. S. Bell, and a winter storm Sunday afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Tom Kooy entertained Saturday evening. Mr. & Mrs. Maurice MacDonald, Grand Bend, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Noles, Forest, and Mr. & Mrs. Jack Dickins, Exeter, were their guests. Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Latta and Centre board is appointed By MRS. FRED BOWDEN CENTRALIA A meeting to elect a new committee to govern the affairs of the community centre was held Thursday night last week. Elected were Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Hirtzel, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Breen, Kenneth Hodgins, Ralph Lightfoot and Earl Dixon. Mr. Dixon was appointed chairman and secretary treasurer. PERSONALS Mr. & Mrs. John Thompson were guests Friday evening at a dinner party at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Sherman Eaton in London. Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Eaton of Chatham attended, too, and the occasion was a birthday celebration for Mrs. Lawrence Eaton and Mr. Thompson. Mr. & Mrs. John Thomas of Kitchener were weekend visitors with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Shoebottom. Sunday visitors with Mrs. Arthur McFalls were Mrs. Phil Johnston of Glanworth, Mr. and Mrs. Al Champion and Steven, and Mr. & Mrs. Randy Cuthbert of London. Mr. & Mrs. Berton Morgan and family of Kitchener were weekend visitors with Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Morgan. Mrs. Cooper McCurdy is a patient in Victoria Hospital, London. Mr. & Mrs. J.S. Thompson, Cam Thompson, and Miss Lynn Thompson, Listowel, and Mr. and Mrs. Warner Westman, Granton, were Monday visitors with Mr. & Mrs. John Thompson. Girls invited to lead rally Lucan-Clandeboye CGIT held their ninth meeting January 21 in the C.E. building of Lucan United Church with 25 members and three leaders, Mrs. R. B. Worthington, Mrs. Clare Stanley and Mrs. M. H. Hodgins. The members have been invited to lead the worship service at the CGIT rally in London February 7. After worship service led by Jane Lockyer and Linda Hodgins, and a business session, the girls divided into three groups. Mrs. Stanley's group were given a first lesson in liquid embroidery assisted by Mrs. Frances Saward. Mrs. Hodgins group continued their Bible study, and the senior group under the leadership of Mrs. Worthington, had a discussion on "Social Values and Moral Issues." Mr. & Mrs. Allan Blaine were Saturday evening guests with Mr. & Mrs. Earl Greenlee. Mrs. George McFalls spent Saturday with her daughter and family, Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Davis. Mrs. Harry Carroll returned to her home Sunday following several days in South Huron Hospital. She is awaiting reports on X-ray tests taken during her stay in hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Heber Davis were Tuesday guests with Mrs. Richard Dickins, Exeter, and Monday guests with Mr. & Mrs. Mervyn Elston, Centralia. On Friday they entertained Mr. & Mrs. Earl Shoebottom of Ilderton and Mr. & Mrs. Earl Atkinson, Lucan, and spent Friday evening with Mr. & Mrs. Cleve Pullman. Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Love, Varna, visited with the latter's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Davis Sunday evening. Mr. & Mrs. Eric Muller and family of London spent Sunday with their cousins, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Barker and family. Whalen soloist guests at Toronto By MRS. FRANK SQUIRE WHALEN Mr. & Mrs. Arvid Beitans and family spent the weekend with friends in Toronto. While there Mrs. Beitans was guest soloist at the annual concert of the Latvian Inter City men's choir in Columbus Hall. Mr. & Mrs. Percy Hodgins and Mr. & Mrs. Ken Hodgson attended the Junior Farmers' banquet in the Foresters Hall, Granton, Saturday night. Mr. & Mrs. Heber Davis, Saintsbury, were Friday evening visitors with Mr. & Mrs. Cleve Pullman. Ron Squire was in Exeter Sunday visiting with Mr. & Mrs. J. Dickins. Mr. & Mrs. Steve Fields and family, London, were Saturday dinner guests of Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Johnson. Joan Hodgins is spending this week in Dutton practice teaching. Mrs. Ervin Uldris, London, is spending a few days at the Bertan home. Seek additions for Tops club Five members of the Tops Club were present at the meeting Wednesday of last week held at the home of Mrs. G. G. McKenzie. Mrs. McKenzie presided in the absence of Mrs. Don McRobert. No pigs had to be taken home, and Mrs. Ambrose Koricina of Ailsa Craig was Queen for the week. Any lady (not necessarily over-weight) who would like to join the club could contact Mrs. McKenzie, Lucan; Mrs. Koricina, Ailsa Craig; or Mrs. Don McRobert, Denfield, who would be glad to provide information. Former Lucanite • is hospitalized By a very round-about way, Miss Lina Abbott Saturday received word that her cousin, Mrs. Cliff Down of Edmonton, was at present a patient in Glenrose Hospital, Edmonton, (Station 33, Room 303) as the result of a fall. Mrs. Down is the former Saidie Abbott, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Abbott. She was born and raised on Concession 5 Biddulph, two and one-half miles north of Lucan. Over 60 years ago she moved to Edmonton, where she married, and has lived ever since. Mrs. Down is a cousin of Mrs. Hubert Jones of Exeter, and has many relatives in and around Lucan. He continued with the series of sermons "Pronouns of the Gospel", this time using "We" and quoting from the fifth chapter of the letter of Paul to the Romans "While we were yet helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly." ANGLICAN Rev. R. A. Carson was in charge of the Sunday morning service at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Lucan. The subject of his sermon was "Huron College — Asset or Liability?" The Holy Trinity Sunday School in co-operation with Lucan Hydro Commission is presenting "The Magic of Electrical Appliances" in the Parish Hall, Thursday, January 30. PENTECOSTAL Regular Sunday Services at the Lucan Pentecostal Church were in the charge of Rev. Gordon McDonald. In the latest statistics released byofficials of the Ontario Hockey Association intermediate "B" league, members of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets are well up in the running.. Barry I-learn of the Jets is in third place behind George Robinson and Blake Ingles, both of Georgetown with a total of 44 points.
