High school wrestlers
continue win streak
FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
How(e)
about that
The sayiag "Like father. like son." certainly
seems to apply to one of the greatest hockey players
ever to lace on skates and his two sons.
Gordie Howe.. who continues to amaze everybody
with his steady year in and year out performances with
the Detroit Red Wings has two sons that look to
sure-fire minor league material.
The Howe boys, Mark and. Marty appeared with a
Detroit midget team in. Mitchell last weekend and were
standouts. In a Saturday evening game, the Detroit
midget club drubbed the Mitchell squad 15-2 so officials
die Perth County club decided to strengthen their
forces for a second game on Sunday.
Inserted in to the line-up were five members of
1Rst year's Mitchell Hawks that ousted our local j.unior
Hawks in provincial competition. Rick and Randy
Heinbuch, Dennis Hughey, Bob Powell and Don Vipond.
joined the current midget team and were still on the
short end of a 12-3 score,
In each game the Howe boys scored a couple of
goals to lead their team's powerhouse.
The elder Howe breaks a record every time he
skates onto the ice and each time he gets a goal or an.
assist. We were fOrtunate to be in Detroit Thursday
night when Gordie scored his 20th goal of the current
NHL campaign.
At the time of writing he has a lifetime record of
708 goals and 934 assists for a total of 1642 points. His
nearest opposition in the all-time scoring race, Jean
Beliveau of the Canadiens has .a little better than 1,050
points.
Howe will celebrate his 41st birthday on March
31 of this year and at the rate he and his sons are going
it's quite possible the Red Wings could have a father and
son combination in the not too distant future.
Gordie's goal Thursday night gave him a 20 goal
or more record for 20 consecutive seasons. He broke- in
with the Red Wings in the 1946-4? season at the age of
IS and scored seven goals in 58 games.
The next season he picked up 16 tzOals in 60
games. followed with 12 scores in only 40 games in
1948-49 and started the long string with 35 goals the
next season.
Howe's best scoring, years were from 1950 to
1953 when he scored 43, 47 and 49 goals respectively
and led the league in scoring and was twice named the
league's most valuable player.
Carnival Coming Up
The annual carnival presented by the Exeter
Figure Skating club has been scheduled for Saturday.
February 22 at the Exeter arena.
This .year's extravaganza is entitled "Spring Time
'69" and will feature everyone of the more than 100
boys and girls registered with the local program.
Mrs. Faye- McDonald is again the club professional
and top notch guest skaters are being lined up for the.
event.
Due to a greater number of senior skaters, classes
are being held for a couple of hours on Saturdays in
addition to the regular hours each Monday.
In order to finance this extra ice and practice
time, officials of the club are holding a dance at the
Legion Hall this Saturday night with Tom Noyes and
the Suburbans supplying the music. Tickets are available
from any member of the local figure skating, group.
More On 'Big Week
Saturday is the beginning of Minor Hockey Week
across Canada and although the local observance was
held several weeks ago w, e would like to add a little
further information on minor hockey.
Our support of all minor hockey ventures will be
appreciated every week of the year.
Minor Hockey Week in Canada is one of several
worthwhile projects of the Canadian Amateur Hockey
Association, and as a result of the .C.A.H.A.'s
promotion, volunteer workers across the country are
being told their work is appreciated. Some are being
made the recipients of testimonial scrolls and plaques,
but all are included in the general paeans of praise heard
across the nation this big week of minor hockey.
Although the recognition of the volunteer
organizers, coaches, manag.ers, car drivers and
fund-raisers is one of the most important objectives of
Minor Hockey Week. it is not the only one. Another is
to "focus attention on minor hockey.- This we gladly.
do.
We do so because we agree that minor hockey is
an important part of our community life. It is an
integral part of the fabric of our community and a
major part of the sporting activities of our municipality.
We agree it is beneficial to the youngsters. and because
it is, it is beneficial to the whole community.
We agree in addition to building stronger bodies.
minor hockey contributes to the development of better
citizens while it is keeping them occupied in a
worthwhile endeavour — right at an age when many of
them might easily be engaged in pursuits much less
acceptable to society.
The statistics issued by the C.A.H.A. indicate yet
another reason for supporting minor hockey and
editorializing in favour of Minor Hockey Week. The
C.A.H.A. minor hockey committee points out .that
minor hockey is an activity that, not only works for the
youngsters, but provides work for many adults and in
addition turns back to the Canadian economy more
than rive million dollars every year.
The costs of providing sweaters. skates. and other
equipment (much safety equipment is now
compulsory). the cost of ice rentals. transportation,
meals after games. injury insurance.. are items that soon
run up into many dollars per player. and hundreds of
dollars per team.
Considering there are more than twelve thousand
minor hockey teams in Canada, it is not difficult to
visualize millions of dollars being spent to keep the
operation going. So it is we realize every one benefits.
from minor hockey - truly IT IS good for the
community.
These are sortie of the reasons why we are happy
to "Keep in Step with. Canada- - by supporting Minor
Hockey Week. We urge our readers to do likewise.
