The senior basketball tilt in
Seaforth, Thursday was a thriller
from start to finiah with first
one team and then the other
holding a slight margin.
Seaforth took what appeared
to be a commanding 23.9 lead at
the end of the first quarter but the Panthers fought back to
move in front 33.29 at the half.
Seaforth gained a five point
edge in the third quarter to
enable them to move in front by
a single point, but Glenn
Mickle s charges outscored their
opposition 11-10 in the final
period to draw on even terms.
Ross Huff was the top
Panther point producer with 20
while Saay Baynham was close
behind with 17 points to his
credit. Bill Fairbairn notched
20 minutes of play.
The home team continued
mastery of the game by
outscoring the Exeter team by a
5-2 count in the middle frame.
The Hawks counted the only
two goals of the closing session.
Scott Burton put the Hawks
in front after 23 seconds of play
in the game on a play started by
Grant Walker.
In the second frame Pete
Lawson and Bill Fairbairn each
scored unassisted markers for
the Hawks who were handled by
manager Bob Baynham.
Larry Laye found the scoring
range on two occasions for the
Exeter club in the final period of
play. Jim Hayter and Lawson
drew assists on the final two
scores.
The Hawks drew 13 of the 21
penalties called, including a
10-minute misconduct to Bill
Bourne, shortly before the
halfway mark of the third
period.

FUN-damenta/s
Although the annual observance of Minor Hockey
Day was held here in Exeter on January 4 we have
received some information from the Minor Hockey Week
Committee of the CAHA that is worth passing on.
Cross-country observance of Minor Hockey Week
starts on January 25. Due to the inability of obtaining
suitable opposition for the junior Hawks on the specified
date, local plans were changed.
Following is an open letter to every minor hockey
coach in Canada from CAHA officials.
The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association Minor
Hockey Committee suggests that every coach of a minor
hockey team ask himself this question: "What am I trying
to do?"
Am I trying to give the kids a chance to play
hockey?
Am I working to keep kids off the street?
Am I really interested in boys?
Am I really trying to develop better citizens?
Am I really teaching my boys the fundamentals of
good sportsmanship?
Am I giving every boy an equal chance to play
hockey?
Am I trying to see that the boys HAVE FUN
playing hockey?
OR
Am I trying to win games to bolster my own ego?
Do I say "I won eight games" or "My kids won
eight games?"
And then ask, "which is most important?"
The Minor Hockey Committee suggests that every
minor hockey coach might well decide early what his
objectives are.
We further suggest that the GOOD COACH, the
coach who is sincerely interested in the welfare of boys,
will try to make sure that every boy has fun; that they are
reminded constantly that they are playing a game, and
that play and game means having fun. Then add
instruction in sportsmanship and good citizenship.
When these lessons have been learned, the boys will
be ready for further teaching of the fundamentals of
hockey.
Remember — Enjoying the Game is more
important than the soon forgotten championships. Teach
the FUN-damentals.
Lots of Captains
Four clubs in the National Hockey league this year
have strayed from the traditional system of appointing
one captain and backing him up with two or three
alternates.
The exceptions to the old rule are Chicago, Boston,
Los Angeles and Minnesota. The Black Hawk captains are
Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Pat Stapleton with no one to
replace last year's captain Pierre Pilate.
The Boston Bruins list four alternates,Ted Green,
Phil Esposito, Johnny Bucyck and Ed Westfall. Minnesota
North Stars are using three alternate skippers in Elmer
Vasko, Mike McMahon, Ray Cullen and Wayne Connelly.
At Los Angeles, Bob Wall, Dale Rolfe, Ed Joyal and
Bill White are wearing the letter "A" on their jersey
fronts.
Veteran Alex Delvecchio is captain of the Detroit
Red Wings with Gary Bergman and Dean Prentice serving
as alternates. At Montreal, Jean Beliveau continues as the
long time captain of the Stanley Cup Canadiens with
another pair of veterans, Claude Provost and Henri
Richard in an alternate capacity.
Bob Nevin captains the New York Rangers with
assistance from Harry Howell, Rod Gilbert and Don
Marshall. Ted Hampson is handling the captain duties of
the Oakland Seals with Bert Marsha, and Gerry Odrowski
as alternate captains.
Hard-rock defenceman Ed Van Impe heads the
Philadelphia Flyers while he is backed up by Allan
Stanley, Dick Cherry and Jean-Guy Gendron.
At Pittsburgh, Earl Ingarfield has been named
captain of the Penguins with Leo Boivin and Bob
Woytowich serving as alternates. Al Arbour handles
similar duties for the high-flying St. Louis Blues. Jim
Roberts and Red Berenson are acting as alternates.
George Armstrong is back again as the leader of the
Toronto Maple Leafs with Ron Ellis, Dave Keon and Tim
Horton in the alternate capacity.
Goalies Showing Well
At least a half dozen goal tenders that have
graduated from junior hockey in Western Ontario are
doing well in professional ranks.
The top candidate for honors at the moment is
former London National netminder, Jerry Desjardins,
who is doing an excellent job for the Los Angeles Kings of
the NHL.
Another pair of London junior goal graduates, Carl
Wetzel and Rocky Farr are currently performing in the
Central League and both have been called up recently by
the Cleveland Barons of the American League for fill-in
duty.
A regular goaler with the University of Western
Ontario Mustangs and Ingersoll Marlands junior club, Ray
Reeson is stopping pucks for the Tulsa Oilers. '
From the Kitchener Rangers of recent years, John
Voss is with the Fort Worth Wings of the Central League
and Dave Hainsworth is a member of the Eastern League
New Haven Blades.
'l'he local wrestlers had little
trouble in downing Seaforth,
although they received a little
additional help when the
opposition failed to name a
grappler in five weight classes
which were taken by default by
South Huron.
The lightest SH wrestler,
Gerard Charrette pinned his
opposition in three minutes to
take the first bout on the
program. Following a South
Huron win by default and two
Seaforth victories, Ron Grasdahl
put the locals in front again by
pinning his opponent in 1.45 in
the 122 pound division.
Continuing the speedy pace hi
gaining a win, Morley Eagleson
also gained a pin, this time in
only 13 seconds over one
minute, competing at 140
pounds.
At 147 pounds, Tom Prout
was a South Huron winner with
a pin win at 3,40 and Dan
Shoebottom competing in the
heavyweight division disposed of
his Seaforth opponent in the
shortest time of the day.
Winning their bouts for the
local school by default were Bill
Cameron, Bob Moore, Jim
Morlock, Rick Pacquette and
Don Jones.
Tom Prout was voted the best
South Huron wrestler of the
afternoon.
The local grappling squad saw
their next action in Clinton
yesterday afternoon, Wednesday
and travel to London Friday
