TUCKERSMITH COUNCIL 1969 — Members of Tuckersmith
council convened recently for their inaugural meeting, this year for
the very first time with a deputy-reeve duly elected and sworn in to

Lady dies
in hospital
Mrs. Manley Jinks, a highly
esteemed resident of Hensall for
many years, died suddenly
Saturday in South Huron
Hospital, Exeter, where she had
been admitted Friday.
The former Irene McClinchey,
she was in her 59th year.
Surviving are one son, Ross
Jinks, London; two daughters,
Mrs. Bill (Bernice) Shupe,
Champaign, Ill., and Susan at
home; two brothers, Garnet,
Seaforth and Edgar, Hensall; and
four grandchildren. Her husband
predeceased her in October,
1964.
Public funeral service was held
from Bonthron Funeral Home
Monday conducted by Rev.
Harold F. Currie. Burial was in
Hensall Union Cemetery,
Pallbearers were Hein
Rooseboorn, Walker Carlile, Ron
Mock, Bill Smale, Fred Peters and
Howard Smale.
Church was withdrawn Sunday
owing to the weather conditions
but will be resumed Sunday when
Rev. Hughes of Watford will have
charge of the service,
.Miss Mary McCann, Mount
Carmel, spent a few days last
week as a guest of Miss Pamela
Sangster.

service Sunday the installation of
the UCW officers for 1969 was

Mrs. Harold Shaver, Galt, and
Mrs. Stewart Bell, Pauline and
Troyann, attended Western
Ontario Section Figure Skating
• competition in Sarnia Thursday,
Friday and Saturday of last week.
Won Shaver won the Senior Men's
qampionship.
Dave Kyle has returned home
from Victoria Hospital where he
underwent surgery.
Mrs. Alfred Clark was taken to
• South Huron Hospital Thursday.
Miss Jennie Buchanan, who
has been a patient in St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, was moved

Year for Unit 4 of Hensall UCW
was held in Fellowship Hall
January 9 with an attendance of

presided. The devotional in the
charge of Mrs. Albert Alexander
was appropriate for the beginning
or the New Year.
Study on China was presented
by Mrs. McAllister and a • discussion period followed which
brought out many interesting and
informative highlights.

Zurich resident
dies at home
A well-known Zurich resident,
M. Edward Haberer, Zurich,
• passed away at his home Friday.
His wife, the former Ellanora
Reichert, had predeceased him.
Survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. John (Lenora)
Turkheirri, Zurich; one sister,
Miss Frieda Haberer, Zurich; two
brothers, Ferd Haberer and Jacob
• Haberer, both of Zurich; two
grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral was from St. Peter's
Lutheran Church, Zurich,
Monday with interment in the
church cemetery.

Mrs. Johnny Miller and Mrs.
John Templeman were hostesses
for the Christmas meeting of the
Staffa WI which was held in the
community hall December 27
with 22 members and 16 visitors
present.
• A letter was read from the
Institute's adopted child in
Turkey. The leaders for the next
4-H Homemaking club will be
Mrs. John Wallace, Mrs. Charles
Douglas, Mrs. Spencer Jeffery
and Mrs, George Vivian.
Mrs. Ross McPhail presented a
paper on the motto "I do not fear
what next year will bring when
God giveth light for the year."
As the special feature, Mrs.
Wilbur Glanville introduced her
grandson, Gary Penhale, Exeter,
who entertained everyone with a
• melody of numbers played on the
steel guitar.
Christmas carols were sung
with Mrs. Robert McCaughey at
the piano. The children present
enjoyed games under the
directions of Mrs, Charles
Douglas and Mrs. Lloyd Miller
and each received a bag of candy.
Secret pals were revealed and
gifts exchanged.
PERSONALS '
Earlier in December an
enjoyable and informative
evening was spent at the
Centennial Public School at
Bruce field, Teacher Spencer
Jeffery showed WI members and
their husbands the many rooms
and their uses and also explained
the present system of education.
Returning to classes after the
holidays, are Margaret Worden
and Heather Daynard to
University of Western Ontario,
Joanne Worden to University of
Waterloo and Bob Templeman to
University of Guelph,
Mrs, Jim Lyall and her
children Nancy and David,
Friday to South Huron Hospital,
Exeter.
Congratulations are in order
to Tom Travers, who received
word last week that he had been
successful in passing with
honours the grade two theory
examination of the Royal
Conservatory of Music. Tom is a
pupil of Miss Greta Laramie

Mitchell were recent visitors with
Mr, & Mrs, Bev Beaton.

summoned on the Huron County
jury at Goderich this week.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Chaffe and
sons of Mitchell visited recently
with the latter's parents, Mr. &
Mrs. John Corbett and Al.
Service in Carmel Presbyterian
nursery and flowers for the
church for the month of
February.
The World Day of Prayer will
be Friday, March 7 in this church.
The social committee served a

Unit 2 UCW
discuss supper
Unit 2 Hensall United Church
Women met Monday at the
church, Mrs. Rodger Venner
read a poem and introduced the
new study on China dwelling
mainly with Ronan Province.
Mrs. Harold Currie gave the
devotional with a lesson called
"Why be concerned?" taken
from the book "Toward
Understanding China", which
coincides with the study book.
Mrs. Harry Hoy took over the
business plans. Plans were
discussed for the congregational
supper January 29.
A skit was presented by Mrs.
Rodger Venner and her group,
Mrs. Ella Drysdale, Mrs. Ron
Wareing, Mrs. Pearl Passmore,
Mrs. Currie, Miss Mary Goodwin
and Mrs. Jack Drysdale. During
this skit different passages were
read from the J. B. Phillips
Translation, New English Bible,
and Good News for Modern
Man.
Mrs. Wareing and her group
served lunch.
Toronto, spent last week with
Mrs. Lyall's mother, Mrs. Sam
Norris and Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Norris and family.
Mr. & Mrs. Reg Finlayson and
Mike left Sunday for a holiday in
Florida.

Duncan Stewart of
Huronview, formerly of Hensall,
will celebrate his 102nd birthday
on Tuesday, January 14,
ROM in 1867 on Lot 34,
Concession 3, Township of
Osborne about four miles
southeast of Hensall, he was the
son of Robert Stewart and Jane
Ross, pioneers in the area. He
attended country school S.S. 1
Usborne Township, later known
as the Hurondale School,
He spent the summer of 1886
near Le Mars, Iowa with settlers
from home area and in 1889 he
was in Manitoba and Minnesota.
Mr. Stewart farmed in Manitoba
from 1899 to 1909; from 1909 to
1945, he farmed about 2 miles
south of Hensall.
He resided in Hensall from
1945 until 1964 and entered
Huronview in November, 1965,
Blessed with very good health,
Mr. Stewart's memory is
excellent and accurate. He recalls
some of the happenings of his
early years and speaks of going to
the country store at Rodgerville
as a boy for groceries and mail.
Rodgerville was then a thriving
COOKIES
VACHON (ADDED PECTIN)
community about one and
one-half miles south of Hensall,
the half-way point between
London and Goderich. The
country store was operated by
James 13 ontbron,
great-grandfather of Harold
Bonthron of Hensall,
At that time Rodgerville
boasted three blacksmith shops
and two cobbler shops. The
village was the center of the
religious activities too.
A member of Carmel
Presbyterian Church in Hensell
since the spring of 1890, Mr.
Stewart's wife, the former Annie
Bell passed away 22 years ago. He

for January 8 was cancelled and
will be held January 22nd in the
Legion Hall.
Installation of 1969 officers of
Hensall Branch of the Canadian
Legion and Ladies Auxiliary
slated for January 10 was
postponed owing to weather and
road conditions until January 17
to be held in the Hensall Legion
Hall.
