HARRY VANGERWIN 40' II (Exeter) Ltd. ?s The Ontario Egan Grower' Co-operative of London set a record fur its 19$7 fiscal year-- it had a net loss of $284,243 for the period ending last Aug. 31. The London plant, built in 1953, has had a long history of losing money on operations. The highest loss previous to the latest financial statement was last year when it went into the red by $84,344. The bulk of last year's loss and most of this year's deficit was blamed on spoiled beans in company-owned silos that continued to leak until recent weeks. Duncan Ferguson of St. Thomas, chairman of the co-operative, told the annual meeting in Strathroy last week that a $70,000 renovation program has been completed at the plant, waterproofing the silos and revamping the processing operation to speed up Ai output, Mr, Ferguson reviewed the a last 11 months beginning last whose refinery in Chatham has since been closed, will make its final payment to growers when the government deficiency cheques are issued in about 10 days. Growers have already received $12 a ton for their crop. The support price is $15.50. While growers may have expected to get more because final prices in Southwestern Ontario were below the national average, there will be an offsetting reduction because their beets fell below the standard sugar content of 16 percent, or production of 250 pounds of sugar per ton. Payments already made to the growers for the 1967 crop include an initial company payment of $7 per ton at delivery, a government guaranteed advance of $2 and the interim subsidy of $3 Yet to be paid is the transitional assistance benefit of $60 per acre promised by the federal government when the sugar beet industry ceased to exist in Ontario. Lloyd Lovell of Kippen told the T-A last week, he didn't expect the assistance payment would come until late January or early February as the Treasury Department received the necessary figures later than expected. if horn tile mona0etnera and -staff Mataregoe Weldiri# Exeter 2 5.4213, 4et,ette0t4 eekiiiedvitetekier, I Final sugar beet payment expected , early in new year LEADERS GET AWARDS, TOO—At the annual Huron County 4-H achievement night at Seaforth, recently, 4-H participants were not the only ones to receive recognition. The agricultural stabilization board announced Thursday that the total deficiency payment on the 1967 crop will be $5.41 per ton. An interim payment of $3 per standard ton was made in December, 1967. The department estimates 800 growers in Southwestern Ontario will be, affected. Their production that year was 285,000 tons. "Yes," replied Mr. Gregory, However, Mr- Gregory Said a t; budge has been set up for next year and. indieatiens re the plant should realize a profit of 413°14 $15,000, He attributed this to the new agency system in Marketing beans in which the Ontario Bean Growers' Marketing Board pays dealers including the co-operarive $1.25 per 100 pounds for storing and 'precessing beans, past chairman Charles Rae of Zurich said some of the spoiled beans were so deteriorated they wouldn't flow out of the silo and a hole had to be knocked in the side to clean them out. He said some of the'bad beans had been in the silos for more than two years and men at the plant just left them there. Elected directors for two-year terms were Kenneth Ferguson, Alvinston; Gordon Anderson, Northwood. John Mcilhargey of Lucan and Mr. Rau. Mr. Ferguson, Clifford Wildeblood of Northwood and Edward Dearing of Staffa still have one year to serve.
