Pinned under tractor in ditch !.• House gutted An Exeter man, Cliff Mitchell, narrowly escaped death early Sunday morning when his frame cottage was gutted by fire. The fire was spotted by Don. Mousseau, RR 2 Hensall, who was returning home after visiting with friends on Wellington St. in Exeter. He drove to the home on William St., and spotting no one * about, dashed into the home and found Mr, Mitchell asleep in a chair, with flames and smoke filling the home, He dragged Mr, Mitchell from the burning cottage, but the man went back in to get his coat and Mousseau had to go back in and get him out again. The men were outside for only a matter of seconds when something inside exploded and flames shot out the door. The Exeter Fire Department was called to the scene and for a time there was some concern that another man may still be in the building. Charles Corey lived at the house also but was in London when the fire broke out. The firemen managed to douse the flames before the small structure was levelled, but the interior was completely gutted. Blood donations urgently needed A blood clinic will be staged by the Red Cross at the R. E. Pooley Legion Hall on Monday, December 30 and area residents are reminded of the increased need for donations during the 4 holiday season. One reason is the higher accident rates both on the highways and in the home. Certain kinds of chronic ailments — bleeding lifters, for example — also seem to take a jump during the frenzy of the festive season. Members of the local Legion Ladies Auxiliary will be assisting Red Cross officials during the clinic, which will be open from six to nine p.m. Two accidents, ail of a minor nature were reported to Exeter Town Police during the past week. The first occurred early Wednesday afternoon at the edge of the road construction work on Main Street north. A truck driven by Wilfred B. Heaslip of Hagersville was stopped for the construction flagman when he was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Edward Hern, 125 Kensington, Huron Park. Damages of $200 resulted to the Hem car. The second mishap took place on Main Street, near John, Saturday when a 1969 car driven by Kevin Delbridge, 292 Huron was in collision with an auto driven by Frank Brintnell, 61 Anne Street. The Delbridge vehicle was damaged to the extent of $90. District women share last draw Six women captured the final draws in the, Christmas promotion sponsored by the Exeter Board of Trade. Mrs. Glenn Jeffery, RR 3 Exeter, won the top prize of $100. Winners of $10 each included: Kathryn Broderick, Pearl Gans, Barb Gibson and Shirley Pratt, all of Exeter, and Isabel Gascho, Zurich. . Exeter merchants gave away $750 in cash during the annual Christmas promotion. A Parkhill youth, driving a tractor which was towing about, 20 Parkhill area teenagers on a hayride, was killed early Saturday morning when tlie tractor overturnecfin a ditch. Eric .j.„ Hutchinson, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric L. Hu tchinson, was crushed beneath the tractor and was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. John Goddard, Hensall, Huron County coroner, The youth had been driving the tractor north on the 14th concession of Stephen when the tractor tipped over just south of the Crediton Road. The wagon carrying the other teenagers also tipped over, but all escaped injury. Damage to the farm equipment, owned by the youth's uncle, Howard Clark, RR 3 Dashwood, was listed at $500 by Constable W. G. Glassford, investigating officer. At press time it was not known whether an inquest would be held into the youth's death, Besides his parents, the youth is survived by four brothers: Gordon, Lucan; Bruce and James, Parkhill; and Raymond, Corbett; a sister, Sandra, at home; and his grandparents, Mrs, Margaret Clarke, Crediton, and Mr. and Mrs. Langford Ridley, Parkhill. The funeral service was conducted Monday from the Box Funeral Home, Parkhill. The accident was one of five investigated by the Exeter OPP detachment officers this week. Three of them occurred on Thursday, the first at 6:50 a.m. on Highway 4, south of Exeter, involving cars driven by Delton H. Walper, Exeter, and Phillip W. Davis, Dashwood. Constable F. L. Giffin listed damage at $175. At 6:50 p.m. a car driven by Allan H. Hohner, Zurich, went out of control on an icy patch at Rose's Lunch and Service Station in Zurich and struck a building. Damage was listed at $500 by Constable E. C. Wilcox. The other crash on Thursday took place At 7;.30 p.m., when a car driven by Glenn D. Stire, Exeter, went out of control on ice on concession 6-7 of Hay Township and struck a tree in the west ditch. Damage to the Automobile was listed at $800 by Constable D. A, Mason, The final accident occurred on Sunday at 12:50 a.m. on Highway 8.3. at the western limits of Dash wood, The car was driven by Leo D. Ducharme, RR 2 Zurich, and .in the crash, a passenger, Charles Jeffrey, Rh 2 Zurich, suffered minor injuries, Damage was estimated at $300 by Constable Mason. During the week the OPP laid 21 charges under the Highway Traffic Act and issued warnings to another 45 drivers. Two persons were charged under the Liquor Control Act. List winners in decorating Exeter householders had their homes ablaze with lights Thursday evening for the annual judging of the best outdoor Christmas display of decorations, Judges toured the town for about three hours, giving careful consideration to each of three categories — elegance, religious theme, elegance in simplicity. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Russ Broderick, Waterloo St., was named the winner in the class for elegance; the little white church at the Arthur Frayne dwelling on Carling St. took the prize for the best religious theme; and the property of W. G. Seldon, Andrew St. dressed in a bevy of red lights was first for elegance in simplicity. Honorable mention went to homes decorated by Harvey Pfaff, Reg MacDonald, Douglas Wedlake and David Cross and their families.
