House gutted
An Exeter man, Cliff
Mitchell, narrowly escaped death
early Sunday morning when his
frame cottage was gutted by fire.
The fire was spotted by Don.
Mousseau, RR 2 Hensall, who
was returning home after visiting
with friends on Wellington St. in
Exeter.
He drove to the home on
William St., and spotting no one
* about, dashed into the home and
found Mr, Mitchell asleep in a
chair, with flames and smoke
filling the home,
He dragged Mr, Mitchell from
the burning cottage, but the man
went back in to get his coat and
Mousseau had to go back in and
get him out again.
The men were outside for
only a matter of seconds when
something inside exploded and
flames shot out the door.
The Exeter Fire Department
was called to the scene and for a
time there was some concern that
another man may still be in the
building.
Charles Corey lived at the
house also but was in London
when the fire broke out.
The firemen managed to
douse the flames before the
small structure was levelled, but
the interior was completely
gutted.
Blood donations
urgently needed
A blood clinic will be staged
by the Red Cross at the R. E.
Pooley Legion Hall on Monday,
December 30 and area residents
are reminded of the increased
need for donations during the

One reason is the higher
accident rates both on the
highways and in the home.
Certain kinds of chronic ailments
— bleeding lifters, for example —
also seem to take a jump during
the frenzy of the festive season.
Members of the local Legion
Ladies Auxiliary will be assisting
Red Cross officials during the
clinic, which will be open from
six to nine p.m.
