His involved with the Field Crops Extension Program for that area. Mr. McDonald's transfer is effective immediately, Ontario white bean growers can expect to receive an average price of about $8.50 cwt. from their 1968 crop by the time it is all marketed next August, a marketing official said Tuesday. Charles Broadwell, sales manager of the Ontario Bean Producers Marketing Board, told Huron County growers at their annual district meeting at Zurich that if everything could be settled up now the average would be about $8.10. However, with sales just starting in earnest on the domestic market, prices should go up bringing both domestic and export price averages up. The board, operating this year for the first time under an agency marketing system which gives it control of all the beans, has already made an initial payment of $5.50 per bag (100 pounds), when farmers sold their beans. Mr. Broadwell forecast a second payment would be made about April. He said the board hoped it would be about $2. He indicated the final payment on the 1968 crop would likely be made next October. Sales to Monday on the domestic market amounted to 123,260 bags for an average price of $10.44. Export sales of 232,600 bags averaged 9.14 for USED CAR LOT OPEN EVENINGS Every MON.,TUES.,THURS., FRI. 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. LIKE-NEW CARS 68 METEOR HARDTOP 4-door, complete power, new tires, radio, auto- matic, 2-tone black and cherry black H45982 64 CHEV IMPALA Automatic, power brakes, power steering, tinted windshield, radio, whitewalls " A85172 64 FORD 500 Fairlane radio, V-8 automatic, motor completely overhauled H47929 63 CHEV BELAIR 4-door sedan, radio, automatic H45934 63 FORD SEDAN 4-door, new tires, radio, automatic H46244 63 MERCURY 4-door Sedan, V-8 auto., radio, E82148 SPECIAL $995 61 RAMBLER 6 cylinder, stick, 4-door sedan H46775 62 PONTIAC Convertible, V-8 auto., 283 cu. in., new top, new paint, yellow A87748 62 COMET 2-door, privately owned H47657 COMING SOON . . 66 CALIENTE Sedan 4-door. That, plus administration costs of the agency scheme, should result in the over-all $8.50 average to the grower. "Most of our business now is domestic so our over-all average should go up," . Mr. Broadwell said. Last year bean growers averaged about $9 a bag but they received that on one of the lowest-yielding crops in history — 821,000 bags. The average for the three previous years was in the $7.20-$7.50 range. The 1968 crop is expected to yield just under 1,000,000 bags. The statistics branch of the Ontario department of agriculture and food came in for criticism for forecasting a crop of 1,600,000 bags earlier this year while the board was looking for a 900,000-bag crop. Mr. Broadwell said the official statistics of the department presented the board with difficulty in selling beans at a reasonable price. "It was tough for us to justify our price to dealers with that high forecast," he said. However, the matter had been corrected and the board anticipates a more accurate forecast next year. Board chairman Robert Allan of Brucefield said co-operation with the dealers has been excellent under the agency scheme. He said the board was able to sell more beans to the United Kingdom than ever before but domestic sales have been slower than usual. In a question from the floor on the cost of setting up the agency, Mr. Allen said, "It cost us the salary of the manager, no extra staff was hired." We also spent 30 cents apiece of your money to join the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. I represented the Bean Board and I feel you got value for your money. One of the benefits derived was doubling the rate for every hydro pole across your farm." The Huron Board chairman went on to say, "When you vote today for your representatives, vote for the man that will work for you. This isn't a Union or Federation meeting, this is a bean producers meeting and vote for the man that will work for the bean growers." Turning to recent farm unity talks, Mr. Allan referred to the apparent breakdown of unity following the Ontario Farmers Union convention last week in Kingston. "The only drawback there is their leader," said Mr. Allan, referring to OFU president Walter Miller of Tara. He quoted Mr, Miller as writing in a union paper that marketing boards were through. "Now I'm kind of glad we didn't give them a grant," he said. Last year, the board turned down a request for a grant to the union. Mr. Allan said Ontario needs a strong central organization before it can move to a national body. Returned as directors to the marketing board from Huron were Mr. Allan. Charles Rau and Philip Durand, both of Zurich, and Gordon Hill of Varna. The same four were named to the Huron County bean committee along with Ted Jeffery and James Love of Zurich; Alex McBeath, Kippen; Malcolm Davidson and Donald Brodie, Brucefield; Richard Erb, B a y fi el d ; Lorne Luther, Lucknow; and Joseph Miller, Dashwood.
