The fabric doesn't need hemming, so rectangles can be cut with either regular or pinking shears. And to give them a really festive look, a holiday motif can be sprayed on in either gold or silver, using a stencil. Just draw the outline of a tree, bell or holly sprig on a cardboard, cut it out, and your stencil is ready to use as many times as you wish. Placed flat on the corner of the mat, and sprayed with quick-drying spray, the design will add a professional and decorative touch to the placemats, spraying the candle . . . and makes it easy to turn the candle slowly while you sprinkle it lightly with glitter. It will also come in handy to hang the candle on the table's edge until it dries. Or, if you will, once the spray is dry, pin dazzling sequins to the candle in an overall design. You'll find short-stemmed common pins the best ones for this job. And glamorous as these candles are when you're finished, they'll still burn bright and long. SPARKLING CANDLES Glowing candles bring warmth to a room any time, but adding glitter and lustre to their natural beauty gives them a special "party" look. You'll need a can of gold or silver spray, some glitter and a short length of adhesive tape for the transformation. Attaching the tape to the PARTY PLACEMATS It's easy to make party placemats that are as gay as they are practical. In fact, they are so simple to make, this could well be a child's Christmas project. Coated vinyl fabric called "Fabrilite" is ideal to use. It can be bought by the yard in many colors and patterns, can be cleaned with a damp sponge, and Lloyd Lamport Sincere Thanks To all those who sup- ported me at the polls and special thanks to those who worked on my behalf. Watch the Christmas Recipe Box during the next three weelcs for lots of suggestions for holiday entertaining.. * * With all the added expenses at christn)as time, it is difficult to think about saving money. The food bill seems especially high now since most of us are hosting dinners and parties in anticipation of the holidays. It might hell) to watch yourself closely as you shop. First of all, make a list. It is an easy matter to be overstocked on paper towels (just because you can't remember whether you have any or not) and forget to buy hand soap (because you didn't remember the last of it was dissolved in the bath tub which didn't get emptied right aw When at the store, be certain that the items thrown in a basket or piled high on a counter are selling at bargain prices. Their location might just SUGGEST a bargain. End of aisle displays (and other special arrangements) may be placed to catch the eye. Check the size and weight, the price per unit and the grade. These articles may just rate high as "impulse" items, rather than better buys. Examine the items placed above or below eye level. Sometimes they are better buys than those displayed at the more leisurely eye-catching height. And don't (particularly at Christmas) be fooled by pretty packaging! Boxes and bows are, expensive and the product inside, may not necessarily be worthy of the price paid for it. You might even buy the same thing for much less money in a plastic bag or other inexpensive wrapping. * * * You will be interested to note that despite the late spring and the rains, 1968 has turned out to be a year of good crops. Canned and frozen peas, fresh carrots, onions and potatoes, canned whole tomatoes, sweet corn, Ontario cheese and honey are all in excellent supply and of top quality. Prices are favorable, too. By the way, the numbers you see in connection with the advertising concerning fruits and vegetables really mean something to those who know. To get the whole answer, I , telephoned Howard Hotzmann at A & H and asked kit the full story. Howard told me the smaller the number, the larger the produce! For instance, grapefruit is available in 56's, 48's, 36's and 24's. The 56's are the smallest — it takes 56 grapefruit to fill a case. The 24 s are the largest — there are only 24 in a full case. Oranges come in 210's, 180's, 138's, 113's and 88's. It is easy to figure out that the 180's are only half the size of the 88's. Therefore, you might expect to pay more for the 88's than the 180's. All produce is figured on this basis, says Howard. It pays to know these things when you are shopping. 1_99 CHOOSE FROM OUR WIDE SELECTION!
