Hockey calibre improves 006200 PIONEER (51,i CHAIN SAWS MILT ROBBINS & SONS LTD. 436 MAIN ST. — EXETER 235.2940 Hawks lose to Hespeler The Exeter Hawks were unable to overcome an early three goal deficit as they bowed to the Hespeler Shamrocks 6-4 on Exeter ice, Friday in a regularly scheduled Ontario Hockey Association Junior "C" contest. The Hawks record now stands at an even two and two. Their next start will be on home ice tomorrow night, Friday when the Preston Raiders supply the opposition. The New Hamburg Hahns lead the league at the moment with eight points to their credit. SCORELESS IN FIRST The Hawks were unable to find the scoring range in the first period and found themselves on the short end of a 2-0 count when the first period ended. Rick Walker and Bill tallied for the visitors in the first period and Norm Cusarin upped the Hespeler margin to three goals early in the second. The first Exeter goal came. from the stick of Scott Burton at 12:30 of the second session. Assists on the play went to Bill Bourne and Dan Anderson. The Hespeler lead was cut to a single goal early in the third when Jim Hayter beat Bill Burgess in the Hespeler nets on an unassisted effort. Hespeler responded quickly and were able to restore their three goal edge on scores by Ken Cripps and John Rolland. Then it was the Hawks' turn to get on the score sheet and they did on two occasions in short order. Hayter clicked for his second of the night, again on a solo try and Burton also After three weeks of hockey the coaches are getting better acquainted with their players which is improving the calibre of play in Pee Wee house league. After this week's games changes will be made where necessary in order to balance the teams. A second pee wee and bantam all-star team will be selected and games with other teams will be arranged. Practice or game time for these two teams will be on Tuesday night with pee wee's and bantams from 7 to 8. Larry Willert will coach the pee wees and Bill Fairbairn will handle the bantams. Over 200 boys have registered for hockey this season which is the largest number of registrations we have had for a long time. Talking about registrations the figure skating club has a large enrolment this year with 110 so far. This is about all that can be handled, particularly in the beginner classes. notched his second goal of the game on a play originated by defenceman Pete Lawson. With the Hawks pressing to get the equalizer, Keith Chester -broke loose and counted an ' insurance marker for Hespeler. John Bierling was in they Exeter nets replacing regular goalie Glenn Stire, who was sitting out a suspension for throwing his stick in an earlier contest. Former Exeter minor performer Frank DeVriese was a solid performer on the Hespeler defence. By ALVIN WILLERT Mothers & tot skating is proving so popular this year that Thursdays from 3-4 along with the present Tuesdays will be used by this group. There is no fee charged for these sessions and everyone in the area is welcome. The Flyers with Terry MacDonald replacing injured Danny Brintnell in goal went on to defeat the Jets by a score of 4 to 1. Wayne Regier got the lone goal for the Jets who by the way were minus their goalie and captain for this game. In the first game of the doubleheader, Thursday, Graham and Graham shaded the Old Timers 9.7 and in the windup in an equally tight contest, the Bank Boys edged Huron Park 10-9. Tonight's action pits Graham and Graham against the Bank Boys at eight o'clock with the Old Timers tangling with Huron Park at 9:30. LOTS OF SCORERS In the night's lidlifter with G & G chalking up a 9-7 victory, only one player on each club was able to score more than one goal. Jack Glover notched a pair of markers to lead the Graham scoring attack with singles being picked up by Ed Kerslake, Otto Smale, Bob McMillan, Craig Davidson, Cliff Webber, Doug McBride and Tom Watt. For the Old Timers, Paul Mason was the only double scorer. Checking in with single counters were Don Campbell, Don Heywood, Bill Farquhar, Ron Moore and Larry Willert. HAT TRICK LEADS A three goal scoring effort turned in by Paul McKnight led the Bank Boys to their 10-9 squeak over Huron Park. Coming close to equalling McKnight's performance, but having to settle for two goals each were Lloyd Moore, Bob Jones and Pete McFalls. Adding the other BE score in single style was Cy Blommaert. Frank Boyle and Grady Bonner each fired two goals to head up the Huron Park scoring barrage. Single markers were fired by Ben Bennett, Larry Brintnell, Don Hart, Rod Hippern and Ossie Oesinghaus. The schedule for the Rec league follows with the eight o'clock game listed first in each case. The second game was a battle from start to finish and ended in a tie between the Aces and Hawks. Brad Datars scored two goals with a single goal by Larry Johns for the Aces. Brian Taylor and Paul Mohr took care of the scoring for the Hawks with Brian netting two and Paul one. The Novice game ended with a score of 5 to 3 for Boston over Rangers. Goalie Terry Ryckman had to be sharp in this one to hold the Rangers, to only three goals. Tom Hayter was top marksman with two goals with Ken Pinder, Kevin Wurm and Marty Becker adding singles. Perry Pooley, Laurie Skinner and Vaughan Ostland each scored a goal for the Rangers. The new bantam houseleague got away to a very good start last Saturday with Toronto taking this one with a score of 5 to 2. The all-stars were taken out of these bantam teams and this gives the rest of the players, mostly first year boys up from pee wee a better chance to develop.
