South Huron's Grade 10 students will be leaving for Ottawa sometime in early November. This should prove to be educational as well as. enjoyable. The students will be staying at the Chateau Laurier which is close to the Parliament Buildings in downtown Ottawa. The aim of the trip is to provide the Students with a better understanding of how the Canadian parliamentary system functions. No doubt they will be attending Parliament in session and may also have the opportunity to visit with Mr. McKinley the MP for Huron. * 'l * The high school students had the opportunity of viewing a first rate film last Friday. It is a film which was presented recently to Waterloo and Western University students and is entitled "The War Game". Although the situation presented is hypothetical, it is a shockingly realistic documentary on the probable holocaust of a Third World War. It is a movie which, in my opinion, should be shown to young people of all countries since, as the narrator warns, "The scenes that you have The .annual awards .assembly took Place laat Tuesday at which. time SoUth .Huron's. most accomplished StndentS stepped forward to receive 'their rewards for last .year's. work. What really angers me is the fact that on two of those nights the films shown at 11:40 p.m. were comedies that the little ones would have enjoyed. I telephoned Mr. Armstrong, Programming Director for CFPL-TV, and he said the current trend to adult movies at 9 p.m. Friday will continue because it is "prime time and has a vast viewing audience which demands "good" movies." He is probably right about "prime time" and "vast viewing audience" but I am willing to bet the "audience" is made up mainly of children and their baby-sitters. I cannot afford to take a private "Public Opinion Poll" . . so would you ask those responsible parents in the Channel 10 viewing area to telephone Mr. Armstrong at CFPL-TV, 434-2115 or write to him and give him their views on these questions: .1.-What do you-think of•the movies shown on CFPL-TV at 9 p.m. Friday? 2. Who watches them most, you or your children? 3. Would you prefer to watch Adult movies at a later hour on Friday if your children could watch something more suitable for them at the earlier hour? A small sample of public opinion — having spoken to members of four local women's groups I find they are in agreement with me. In fact, it was pointed out that more and more people do their shopping on Friday night and don't bother with TV until after 10 p .m .” If any reader is in agreement with the above letter please lend me your support by writing to Mr. Armstrong, CFPL-TV, London Ont., protesting that station's Friday night programming. to ask for your aid in this matter which, I believe, is important to all of our children. "As mother of a large family, I am quite concerned about the current crop of Very Adult movies being shown on CFPL-TV, Channel 10, London, on Friday evenings at 9 p.m. Our younger children are allowed to stay up later on Friday nights to watch TV, as is the casP in most families. In our area we get only two channels and for three weeks in a row we could not allow our children to watch Channel 10 because of the type of movie being shown.
