FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS •
By :Ross .HOUgh
Tiers all
the way
What a change one year can bring, For 73 years
the faithful fans of the Detroit Tigers have waited for a
chance to see their favorites in the, World Series.
Just a year ago, the Tigers lost out on the last day
of the season and we wrote in this column a revised
version of "Casey at the Bat," saying there was no joy in.
Tigertown,.
Tuesday night, there was plenty of joy in
Tigertown and some of the more enthusiastic Bengal
supporters celebrated far into the hours of Wednesday
as the Tigers clinched the pennant with almost two
weeks left in the schedule,
With a berth in The World Series a certainty, the
big question now rises, "Who will get tickets to see the
home games at Tiger Stadium?"
Reserved box, grandstand and pavilion seats are
being sold by mail only with, single game bleacher
tickets going on sale at the Tiger Stadium ticket booths
at 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 2,
We joined at least a half dozen other fans in the
immediate Exeter area in sending for tickets, early
Monday morning. The press release from Detroit,
Wednesday morning said no mail orders post marked
before September 23 would be accepted, so we had our
money orders ready and dropped the letters in the local
Post office, late Sunday evening so they would receive a
Monday morning post mark. Now, all we can do is sit
back and hope for the best that at least a few of the area
letters are drawn out of the vast pile of mail that is sure
to arrive at the Tiger offices.
This year's version of the Tigers has to be the
most exciting in the history of the Detroit club. In at
least one-quarter of their 1968 games, the Tigers have
come on to win after being behind or tied after seven
innings of play.
The long ball, a strong bench and excellent relief
pitching is the answer to the Tigers' success. They lead
the league in homers hit with close to 190, which is a
new high for one season for a Detroit team.
If one would begin to name stars in the Tiger
line-up the list could become almost endless. Of course,
Denny McLain with at least 31 wins to his credit is right
at the top.
Veteran Al Kaline probably summed up the
pennant win the best by saying, "This was a 25-man
effort." Kaline was reported to have said last week that
he didn't play enough during the season to deserve
participation in the World Series, suggesting the younger
players earned the right to play in the Fall Classic.
The day after Kaline made that statement, he
came up with a perfect hitting performance, getting
four-for-four and a walk in five trips to the plate.
Tigers In Five
In making our annual World Series predictions,
we have no doubt at all in calling the Tigers to win over
the St. Louis Cardinals. As a matter of fact, We will call
the Detroit club to take it all in five games.
The Tigers, at least, at the moment are at their
peak, while the Cardinals have fallen a bit. Even after
clinching the pennant, Mayo Smith's boys continued on
to an 11 game winning streak.
Their ability to come from behind along with a
concerted desire to win that has built up over a 23 year
span should enable the Tigers to down the Redbirds.
Fans Go Wild
After Tuesday's pennant win for the Tigers, their
fans went completely wild and the celebrations came
close to riotous proportions.
One Detroit policeman said after things had died
down that "it was nice to have a friendly riot for a
change." The happy spectators removed about 300
square feet of sod in the outfield along with a number
of box seats as souvenirs.
A couple of stadium guards were stationed at the
home plate area to discourage a couple of fellows from
taking the plate away. Stadium workmen had a busy
Wednesday in restoring the park for another game that
night, but were able to have everything in readiness
when the umpires called play ball.
Regular season starts this week
Jets sign another hockeyist
The executive of the newly formed Lucan-Ilderton Jets intermediate hockey club has been busy during
the past couple of weeks lining up players for the coming season. The latest to sign. an OHA playing
certificate is Jack Nairn, a star with the St. Marys Lincolns of a few years ago. Above, Nairn is signing a
L-1 card with his wife, Gail and club vice-president Howard Keayes looking on. T-A photo.

in Rec semi-final
The best-of-five semi-final
series in the Exeter and district
Rec softball league is proving to
be a close one. In the opening
game, Wednesday, John Sneh's
BA's hung up a 7-0 win over the
Kinsmen and appeared to be
well on the way to the finals.
Sunday night it was a
different story as the Kin rallied
in the bottom of the eight to
score a single run and post a 6-5
decision to even the series.
The third game scheduled for
Tuesday night was cancelled by
the heavy rainstorm and at press
time had not been rescheduled.
The winner of the BA —
Kinsmen series meets the Exeter
Legion in the league final. The
Legion finished first in the
regular schedule and received a
bye into the finals.
STRATEGY PAYS OFF
Kin manager Ed Hearn
inserted Jim Newby into the
lineup as a pinch runner for Bob
Russell in the bottom of the
eight and he promptly stole
second and came home on Jim
Hewitt's clutch single to provide
the difference in the Kinsmen
6-5 win over the BA's.
The BA's, known at the
beginning of the year as Teen
Town scored three times in the
first inning and added two more
in the second to take what
seemed to be an unsurmountable
lead.
The Kinsmen fought back
with a single marker in the first,
the executive will be made up of
the managers of the balance of
the teams in the organization.
Arena manager Alvin Willert
has announced that he will
probably be starting ice making
operations about October 19.
Minor hockey registrations have
also been slated for the morning
of the 19th at the arena.
Registration fees will remain the
same as those charged last year.
three more in the third and
added the tying run in the sixth
to send the game into extra
innings.
A single from the bat of Bill
Farquhar, two Kin errors and a
walk produced the BA runs in
the first frame.
Bill Fairbairn's double in the
second after two more Kinsmen
miscues completed the BA run
scoring for the night.
The opening Kin run came on
a walk and Larry Stire's single in
their first trip to the plate. A
single by pitcher Bill Fisher and
Lyle Little's double added to a
walk and a BA fielding error
upped the Kin run total to four
in the bottom of the third.
Jim Hewitt reached first on an
error to open the Kin sixth and
came home on Little's single, his
second hit of the night to tie the
score.
Bill Fisher went the distance
on the Kin mound to gain the
victory and picked up five
strikeouts along the way. His
pitching opponent • Doug
Kennedy was in top form,
racking up a total of 13
strikeouts but gave up a half
dozen walks to get himself into
occasional trouble.
KENNEDY FANS 15
In the first game of the series
taken by the BA's 7-0, Doug
Kennedy was at his best in
rolling up 15 strikeouts and
holding the Kinsmen club off
the scoresheet.

Hockey fans in the area will
have the opportunity to witness
a lot of exciting junior action
this coming winter.
At a reorganizational
meeting, Thursday, members of
the executive of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association and
other interested persons decided
to enter the Exeter Hawks in
Junior C competition.
While a definite grouping has
not yet been secured for the
Hawks, who made a terrific
showing in "D" playoffs last
year, it is hoped they would be
included with teams to the east
and north.
Although, teams have until
October 1 to make their entries
known to the OHA, secretary
Bill Hanley notified Exeter
officials Friday that clubs from
New Hamburg, Mitchell and
Walkerton were already entered
in "C" play.
Derry Boyle, who was
re-elected as EMHA president at
Thursday's meeting said "If we
can gain entry to this league it
will make for a good brand of
hockey. We know the opposition
will be stiff."
All but five members of last
year's Hawk club are expected
to be back. Only Bill Chipchase,
Rick McDonald, Larry Willert,
Craig Davidson and Ron
Broderick are ineligible for

If exhibition games are any
indication of what is in store in
the regular seasons the two
football clubs at South Huron
District High School should have
a good year.
Both. clubs came up with
impressive victories in pre-seasop
tilts last week.
The senior Panthers, reigning
Huron-Perth champ s ,
slaughtered the Mitchell Red
Devils in Mitchell, ThursdaY by a
38-0 Count. and the _following
after noon the local juniors
outscored Central Huron of
Clinton 43-12.
SENIUK SCORES FIVE
Mike Seniuk, a newcomer to
South Huron from London led
the juniors in their 43-12 romp
over Clinton. Mike, a grade nine
student and a resident at Huron
Park, Centralia scored the last
five touchdowns of the game for
SHDHS.
Clinton scored early in the
first quarter to jump in front
quickly 6-0. Brian Bestard broke
loose on a 35 yard running play
to even the score and came right
back to go 25 yards on a pass
play for his second major score,
which was converted to put the
junior Panthers in front 13-6.
Seniuk then took over to
score twice late in the second
quarter to up the half-time score
to 25-6. Clinton added a single
unconverted touchdown late 'in
the game after Seniuk had
completed his scoring rampage.
In the first scheduled game of
the season, the same two clubs
meet in Clinton this afternoon,
Thursday.
Quarterback Randy Decker
and halfbacks Peter Kleinstiver
and Larry Bourne were
outstanding on the South Huron
offence while Fred May and
Peter Groat were best on
defence.
Decker has been named
captain of the club with Paul
Passmore and Bob Griffith
acting as co-captains. Doug
Ellison handling the coaching
duties for the club.
ANOTHER GOOD START
Ron Bogart's senior Panthers,
unbeaten in senior conference
play last year continued their
streak with the decisive 38.0 win
over Mitchell.
Tom Prout was the top scorer
for the Panthers with a pair of
touchdowns to his credit. Single
major scores were added by Jim
Hayter, Barry Baynham and Bill
Fairbairn. Hayter added one
point on a convert kick and Bill
Bourne added another point
after touchdown on a pass.
South Huron gained 241
yards on the ground and 104
through the air for an overall net
gain of 345 yards. The local
defensive line also had a good
afternoon, limiting the Mitchell
offensive unit to a net gain of
34.
In assessing his club this year,
Bogart said, "We are just as good
as last year. Possibly a little
weaker in depth, but barring
injuries should repeat again as
league champions."
Scott Burton has returned to
quarterback the club with Tom
Prout and Barry Baynham at
halfback posts and Jim Hayter
and Bill Fairbairn at the fullback
slots.
