Draw helps pigeon association
Friday night was a busy one in Lucan as members of the Southwestern Ontario. Federation of Pigeon
Racing gathered to band their birds in preparation for the long flight from. Tweed, over the weekend. A
draw was two based on the speed of the winning bird, ,Jinn Thompson of Clandeboye was the lucky
winner and is shown above receiving his winnings from a junior member of the Lucan club, Jeff Culbert.
The balance of the draw proceeds go to the .district association. Clubs from Mitchell, Sarnia, St, Thomas,
London, St, Marys, Stratford and Lucan participated in the banding .activities„ Friday. T—A photo

badly needed
The opening fall meeting of
the Lucan Cubs was held in the
Scout Hall Monday evening with
Scout Master Gordon Froats,
assistant Tom Barr and 17 cubs
present.
Owing to an invitation to
meet the Exeter Cub ball team
Saturday, most of the meeting
was spent on practice,
Lucan is in dire need of a
'Scout Master as several of the
cubs are now ready for
promotion. Anyone knowing of
a possible Scout Master, kindly
contact Mr. Froats.
Walk planned
from Granton
Lucan-Clandeboye CGIT
members plan a walk from
Granton to Lucan on Tuesday at
5:00 p.m. All members are to
meet at Lucan United Church
and bring a box lunch.
The girls require sponsors
with the money to be used for
CGIT and a desk for the church.
The first CGIT meeting was
held Tuesday at Lucan.
Thirty-four members were in
attendance. The installation of
officers was conducted by Mrs.
Worthington.
Officers are: president, Grace
Smith; vice-president, Brenda
Herbert; sec. Kathryn
Worthington; treas., Jane
Hodgson; pianist, Marlene
Butler; leaders, Mrs. R. B.
Worthington, Mrs. Murray
,Hodgins and Mrs. Clare Stanley.
Mrs. M.H. Hodgins gave a talk
on what it means to be a CGIT
member.
'Mrs, Hodgins gave chevrons
and world friendship badges to
the group, A film on Chinese
agriculture was shown, The
mission study this year is
"Understanding China and its
People".
Local horses . . post victories
Lucan horses have had several
wins during the past two Weeks.
"Midge Diamond" owned by
Leroy Revirigton and Harry
LoydriS won a first at Goderich
And two firsts at Dresden,
``Tug-boat Annie" came
second at Garden City, St.
Catharines, and "Meadow
Roach", also owned by Leroy
Revington came third at Garden
City.

The Lucan. Lions Club
members held their opening fell
dinner meeting in the Anglican
Church basement recently. New
president Harold Butler
presided.
Corp. Bernie Crane showed a
splendid film on "Mechanized
Death",
It was decided to continue to
hold monthly dances the last
Friday of each month, so the
September dance will be
September 27 in the Community
Centre.
The annual $500 draw will be
held at the Legion Hall, October
18. The proceeds from this draw
will go towards the upkeep of
the Centennial Park, the
installation of playground
equipment, the care of needy
families and for the over-all
betterment of the community.
Mrs. Evan Hodgins' group of
the Ladies Guild catered for the
dinner,
The rector gave a splendid
sermon on the theme, "Civil
Disorder",
All were pleased to receive
their first copy of the Church
Bulletin, which will be of great
assistance in remembering time
and date of future meetings.
One error in the bulletin was
the place of the Ladies' Guild
Tea and Bazaar which will be
held Friday, September 27 at S
p.m. in the church basement,
not in Holy Trinity Carlyle Hall
as printed,
UNITED
The usual Sunday morning
service at Lucan United Church
was in the charge of the Rev.
Hugh Wilson of Exeter.
He took for his subject, "The
Hard Way and the Right Way",
Members of Lucan-
Clandeboye Hi-C met in Lucan
United Church Sunday for the
election of officers for the
coming year.
There were 16 members
present and the Worship service
was presented by Bert Walker.
Lunch was served by Linda
Smith and Leroy McGrath.
Officers installed were
president, Bert Walker;
vi c e -president, Grace Smith;
secretary, Donna Walker; and
treasurer, Betty Park,
Institute ladies
enjoy fashions
The president and secretary
of the Lucan Women's Institute
each received an invitation to
the Ladies' Day Luncheon at the
Western Fair. As neither of these
ladies were able to attend, Mrs.
Alex 'Young and Mrs. Frances
Saward deputized for them.
After partaking a very
appetizing lunch, the director of
the fair, managers, and leaders of
the various groups of
entertainers were introduced.
There were about 140 people
present including four Mounties.
These were not needed to keep
order., but their uniforms added
even more brilliance to the ladies'
colorful dresses.
The grandstand show,
including the fashion show, was
enjoyed by all, The CFPL movie
show, "Colourful Canada" was
well worth waiting for,
The ladies were very
interested in the rieddlework
exhibits which were of the
highest standards to be Seen
anywhere.

Fourteen young Lucan
hotterrien hit the trail for a
two-hour ride, Sunday. About
10 miles Of country was covered

Clandeboye lady
joins Tops group
A new member from
Clandeboye was enrolled last
Wednesday evening to the Lucan
Streamliners, making a total of
11 members,,
Leader Mrs, Eldon Hopps was
able to preside.
The weigh-in this week was
much more encouraging than
last week. Mrs. Charles
McRobert was named queen for
the week.
Next Wednesday afternoon,
four executive• members are
going to an executive meeting at
Kitchener.
An invitation was received
from the Strathroy Tops to
attend the crowning of their
queen in November.
The date has not been sot for
the Lucan crowning as yet.
Legion Auxiliary
holds first meet
The Legion Auxiliary held its
first fall meeting recently with
14 members present.
President Mrs. A.E. Reilly
presided and the Mystery Prize
was won by Mrs. Jim Murphy,
During the business session it
was decided to again cater for
figure skating. As Mrs. Anna
Cameron is moving away from
London, it will be necessary to
secure a new teacher.
Plans were finalized for
catering to the Davis-Inson
wedding to be held in Holy
Trinity Anglican Church on
Saturday, September 28.
LUCAN LANES OPEN
The Lucan Lanes bowling
alley opened Tuesday evening
with the Colleens playing their
first game of the season. Mrs.
Grace Henderson is in charge
this year.
Mrs. Calvin Haskett, who
underwent surgery in St.
Joseph's Hospital, was able to be
brought home last Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm Burlington,
Iris and Ralph, Mitchell, Miss
Delores Burlington, RN of
Stratford and David Price of
London were Sunday guests of
Mr, and Mrs. Eric Hodgins.
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Egan of RR
1 Thamesford were Sunday
callers with Mrs. Kay Egan.
Mr. and Mrs. Ron Crozier
entertained Sunday with a joint
birthday dinner in honor of their
daughter Julia, and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. David Maynard of
London.
Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Langford
of Lucan and Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Langford of London have
returned from a few days motor
trip to Temagami, Sudbury and
North Bay. They called on Mr.
and Mrs. C.F. Langford at
Jumping Caribou Lake,
Laura and Lisa, five and three
year old daughters of Mr. and
Mrs. Gary McKenzie, spent last
Weekend in Guelph with their
aunt, Mrs. Don Black and
returned home with their
mother Sunday:
The Boys' Brigade Club
meeting was postponed Friday
evening as most of the members
went to London Fair.
Mr, and Mrs. R.R. Crozier
and family visited Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Mueller at Waterford
Sunday after attending Church
at Ailsa Craig.
Mr. and Mrs. William Butler
were weekend visitors of Mr. and
Mrs. John Park,

by plane for their home in
Florida, Saturday, after spending
Another shop
is reopening
Although all equipment has
not yet arrived, another of
L uean 's vacant stores has
reopened. The Koffee Kup is
under new management with
Harry Arnold and his daughters
in charge.
For months, extensive
alterations and renovations have
made an unbelievable
transformation.
New door, new flooring,
fluorescent lighting, painted
walls and new counters have
been installed and everything is
spotlessly clean.
Stairs to the basement and to
the apartment above have been
renewed. Two rest rooms and a
broom closet modernize the.
building.
The "Rose Room" is still not
renovated but will probably be
again used as a committee room
or private lunch room,
A good supply of school
books, soft drinks, ice-cream and
baking are now available but
when the counter and seats'
arrive, light lunches will be
served,

Park and other relatives. '' “.;
Paul Melanson was very glad
to be able to return to school
Monday. He has been home for
one week after breaking a bone
in his ankle. He will have to use
crutches for some time.
BALL GAME
Saturday was a perfect day
for the exhibition baseball game
between the Exeter Cubs and''.'-
the Lucan Cubs, at Exeter.
The game was very close,
ending up 11-8 in' favor of
Lucan, The Lucan lads came
home very happy.
Brad Taylor pitched for
Lucan and David Smith was
catcher.

The regular September
meeting of the, Lucan Junior
.Farttlera, was held last Tuesday
evening in the Maple Lodge
Community Centre with an
attendance of over 35,
President John Riddell was in
charge,
Plans for .continuing
renovation of the Ausable
cemetery were discussed and
plans for another dance in the
near future were made.
It was decided to .continue
selling signs for slow-moving
vehicles..
FolloWing the meeting all
went to the home of Mr, and
Mrs. Harvey Rollings for a.
• shivaree.
Tuesday, six members
assisted in the Junior Farmer
food booth at London Fair,
Wednesday, two members
assisted selling hay and straw at
the Fair.
Friday other members
assisted in the food booth, so
altogether Lucan Jr, Farmers
had a busy week:
ANGLICAN
Rev. Robert Carson had 20
confirmation candidates — 15
Lucan, 5 Clandeboye — out last
Tuesday night in the Parish Hall.
In the basement, he had 21
eager young people out to
organize an Anglican Youth
Movement Club.
The following officers were
elected: president, Ed
Knoblaugh; first, vice-president,
Cathy Cunningham, Clandeboye;
second vice-president, Alan
Kraut; secretary, Janis Freeman.
To raise some funds, the
young people decided to have a
car wash at the Supertest Service
Station this Saturday.
Flowers in the church Sunday
were in loving memory of the
late Mrs. Hilson Grose.

The "Singing Sisters", of
Chatham will provide the music.
They will also sing at the services
on the following Sunday.
