With the announcement Monday came a strong hint from Clerk-Treasurer John G. Berry .of higher property taxes next year. While the county's financial position is strong now, Mr. Berry said an increase in expenses is anticipated for 1969. Establishment of new assessment and county planning departments would result in additional costs. Mr. Berry said the county's general account showed a $20,000 surplus at June 30, and predicted a year-end surplus of slightly more than $26,000. County Engineer J. W. Britnell said cost of road and bridge construction to the end of July totalled $1,309,335. The 1968 budget is $1,930,000. All bridge work scheduled for this year is near completion, he said. By MRS. Her husband remains in Victoria Hospital, London, Wilfred Logan who was a patient in Victoria Hospital, London, was able to return home Tuesday. Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Carter travelled Sunday to Hepworth Music Hall. Lloyd Gibson has made a great improvement to his home in the village. Council held a routine business session last Tuesday when six building permits were approved. At last week's meeting of Exeter council, Reeve Derry Boyle, a member of the county library board, explained the board was finding it difficult to know how much 'to budget each year for maintenance on the buildings. He said it was necessary to take money set aside for purchasing books to repair libraries and this was not wise. Councillor Joe Wooden thought it may be better to have each municipality responsible for its own library, but suggested the rental may have to be at least $100 per month. A higher figure was later mentioned when all aspects were considered. Born in * Scotland, Mrs. Mannox came to Canada 40 years ago. She had resided in Toronto for a time, and also had worked at Centralia Canadian Forces Base until her retirement to Exeter in 1958. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs: John (Maudie) MacDonald, London, and one son, Philip of Newcastle, England. A sister, Mrs. Chapman of Toronto, also survives. Prayers were said at the R.C. Dinney Funeral Home Monday evening and requiem mass was sung at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Tuesday. • Interment was in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Rev. A.P. Pallbearers were Tom The Ontario Municipal Board has approved construction of a second county building in Goderich to be used by the Huron County assessment department. The two-storey building, 36 by 68 feet, will accommodate the assessment department on the main' floor. The second floor will be reserved for any administrative unit requiring space at a later date. The building will be located on county property adjacent to the jail. At an earlier special session of county council, a $134,378 1ST LT. BOB BORLAND Grand Bend man receives Wings After a little more than a year's service in Canada's Armed Forces, Bob Borland of Grand Bend received his radio navigator's wing and an officer's commission. Bob, the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. 'F. Borland, RR 1, Grand Bend attended public school at SS 4, Minto township and continued his secondary school education at South Huron District High School in Exeter. He spent three months basic training at Esquimalt, British Columbia and a year at 'the Winnipeg Air Navigation School.
