Earwigs are reddishbrown and
about three-quarters of an inch
long with a pair of forceps-like
appendages at the hind end. On
the male these are curved, on
females they are straight.
The forceps are harmless even
though the insects try to pinch
with them when picked up.
European earwigs are active
only at night when they crawl in
all directions in search of food
and possibly shelter.
They climb fences, trees, walls,
etc. and, if plentiful, some will
find their way into houses. By
daybreak most have disappear-
ed under ground cover or in
cracks and crevices.
They are listed as more Of a
nuisance than a menace, but dam-
age may be caused by feeding on
seedling carrots, beans, beets
and many flowers. They may be
found Under the husks of sweet
corn at picking time and in flow-
ers and thus find their way quite
by accident into houses.
They will not harm people or
items in the house.
The department of agricul-
ture recommends apoison-brand
bait, or sprays or dusts Of chlor-
dane, DDT, or malathion. Treat-
ment should be during July when
the insects are small,
poison-bran bait is preferred
because it does not contaminate
the garden as mich as DDT and
chlordane.
Apply the materials al o ng
building foundations, fences,
woodpiles, garages and around
or on the trunks of trees and
any places where they hide.
