HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1968-06-20, Page 10Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Mey-
ers, Zurich, were married in
Varna on June 19, 1918. The bride
was the former Cealia M. Des-
jardine, youngest daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Z, Desjardine,
Babylon Line. The groom's par-
ents were the late Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Meyers, Blake.
The couple resided in Stanley
Township and in Manitoba until
they moved to Zurich in 1927,
They are members of Emmanuel
United Church there.
Mr. Meyers was with Canada
Packers for many years and was
also connected with Zurich
Creamery and McKinley Hatch-
ery. He is a member of the
IOOF Hensall and a charter mem-
ber of the Zurich and Area Cham-
ber of Commerce.
Mrs. Meyers was a maternity
nurse and for fifteen years man-
aged her own nursing home.
In 1949 the couple opened their
doors and their hearts to many
children from the Children's Aid
Society in Huron County. Because
of ill health they were forced to
discontinue their service, but not
before over 500 children had
passed through their loving
hands.
In 1958 Mrs. Meyers was hon-
ored by being named "mother of
the week".
Mrs. Meyers, an active mem-
ber of the Zurich Women's In-
stitute for over 40 years, sat on
the board of the Federated Wo-

While we are waiting for the
supply of berriea to increase
sufficiently to allow lavish use
of them, we could talk about what
to look for in the strawberries
yea Puy. Firm, dry, clean ber-
ries showing full red color and
bright luster, with the green caps
attached, are likely tote most
satisfactory to most home-
makers, The size of the berries
is usually an indication of var-
iety, not flavor.
At home, sort the strawberries
carefully, remove any that show
signs of decay, and refrigerate.
Wash berries thoroughly and re-
move caps just before serving.

Is there anyone who doesn't
like strawberries and cream
served with hot, crispy home-
made biscuits? With so many
working housewives these days,
the prepared biscuit mixes are
becoming most popular but just
the other day we came across
this recipe for a homemade bis-
cuit mix.
We're almost certain our busy
readers will appreciate the con-
venience—and the economy—of
this recipe.
BASIC MIX
8 cups all-purpose flour
5 tbl double-acting baking powder
3 tp salt
'1 cup skim milk powder
1 1/2 cups shortening
Mix and sift flour, baking pow-
der and salt. Add skim milk
powder and stir until thoroughly
mixed. Cut in shortening until
mixture resembles fine bread
crumbs. Store in a covered con-
tainer in refrigerator.
To make tea biscuits:
2 1/2 cups firmly packed tea
biscuit mix
2/3 cup water
Measure mix into bowl. Add
water and proceed as for stand-
ard tea biscuits. Makes 10 to 12
medium biscuits.
I can remember when my
mother used to split warm tea
biscuits, butter them generously,
cover the bottom half with plenty
of sweetened strawberries, top
with the other biscuit half and
pour cool cream or milk all over.

We have plenty of new home-
makers in our readership jud-
ging from the number of engage-
ments and weddings reported in
the T-A. Just as soon as the
wedding and the honeymoon are
over, H might be wise for the
young wife to begin the establish-
ment of a few lifelong assoc-
iations.
The selection of afamilyphys-
lcian is not the most romantic
chore in the world, but it is
certainly a comfort to have a
doctor to call in case of an
emergency. It is good to have
your own doctor and your hus-
band's doctor send charts and
information to your new family
doctor so that he can treat any
illnesses with first-hand know-
ledge of your medical history.
Choose a pharmacy, too, to be
certain you will be as calm as
possible should you need the
services of a pharmacist in a
hurry.
And prepare a first aid kit.
Divide the kit in two—one half
for internal medicines and one
half for bandages and external
preparations. Check the contents
periodically, discard medicines
with damaged or unreadable
labels or any that appear dis-
colored or old. Flush discarded
medicines down the toilet.
As an extra precaution, make
a hazard hunt of your new home
for possible causes of accidents.
It pays in the end.
