Lad's bird wins
It's quality —not quantity
Here we are with the old bird
race season more than half over
and there are still a few of us
who haven't been able to pick off
a winning position yet.
Now it is only safe to state
that the longer races are almost
always won by a person who has
been in the race businesS for a lot
of years. One of these is Clar-
ence Hardy who has more 500
mile birds in his loft than the
whole club shipped to the 500
this week. There are many oth-
ers that have quite a few old
time 500 milers also. :nese
are the boys to watch for at
such a distarre.
This Weekend has just pro-
ven to all of us it isn't the
quantity but the quality that
counts. We have in our club
one young lad who is to be
congratulated.
Dwight Henderson, who en-
tered two birds in the 500 mile
race for the first time in his
life just walked off with first
Pet"'
position and then stood back and
grinned at the rest of us.
We sent the birds from Lucan
On Wednesday evening. They were
released in Grande Mere Cal:e-
t:en at 5:30 A:M. on rtiday,
tvery one Was watching on Fri-
day evening for some bird to
be able to beat the heat and
get home in the day. ato one
had such a bird in Ludam
on Satarday morning, the sun
came up and se did all the bird
Watchers, Dwight -didn't have to
sit out in the morning sun very
lotig. At 7:01 he clocked a little
red hen, which was good enough
to give hfm first position by
about •five Minutes.
This being his first time to
the 500 there Was about a 10 to
1 chance of hirt: Wintiing4
ever he Made a very good fly
and along With the first prize-
money goes MCLeanS Stiperteat
trophy,
sank Hardy was in second and
third; North got ftairth; Toth and
cord fifth; and Clarence sixth,
Norm `wail 'in again for seventh
And Willy Vartheste got eighth:
Now that takes care of. SIX of
the lofts that Shipped. There Was
One left that had a no repett.
The boys told Culbert he didn't
have any birds that could fly the
500. He says he has, but he
didn't say 'WV long it Will take
them to 'get here 4 ,so to sum
up this first 500 miles of 1968
our hats are off to the Hen-
dersons and the heads will come
off at the Culberts.
We also had another race this
past weekend. There were 10 lofts
shipped 113 birds to Tweed. (222
miles) The birds were liberated
in Tweed at 6:30 A.M. The first
bird was home at 11:17 A.M.
This bird was clocked by Tom
and Gord Hardy. It was Making
1365.1 yards per minute which
is very good time for such a hot
day. They also won the Ken Car-
ter trophy for this race.
Ten minutes later they clocked
their second bird to get second
position in the club.
Then came Willy with a bUrst of
speed to take third, fourth and
fifth positions, He clocked these
three birds in 31 seconds which
should be some kind of a record
in itself.
Now after Clarence saw the
two boys clock two birds, he
decided that was enough. So still
being the big white chief around
there, he sent the two lads to the
field with a load of manure and
sure enough he got one while they
were away and got sixth. Norm
was in for seventh and good old
Chuck Barrett was there for
eighth position.
Chuck has not flown as Well
this year due to the fact he has
had to re-settle all his birds
from Exeter to St. Marys. He
figures his birds fly to Exeter
and then back to St. Marys so if
he gets on the sheet he is doing
very well.
Next week we go to Smith
Falls, the 300.
