Corn planters were simpler in "Grandfather's day." Their list of
advantages runs like a modern T,V, commercial cheap, easy to
use, no expensive repairs, stores in any corner and only one will-
ing person is needed to operate it. But turning into any field with
this planter would make today's farmer appreciate his modern
conveniences. The photograph was taken by R. R. Sallow of God-
erich, Ontario Reproduced by the Ontario Department of Agricul-
ture and Food.

If you grow soy beans, dry beans, or tomatoes, you can cut hoe costs and
reduce cultivations with Treflan ... the weed killer than can pay for
itself several times over. It dependably stops all annual grasses and many
broadleaf weeds for months wet weather or dry.

GARDEN TIPS
The birch leaf miner presents
a major hazard to any home
owners with birch trees in their
yard. During the second week of
May, horticulturists with theOn-
tario Department of Agriculture
and Food recommend that you
spray birch trees withMalathion,
lindane or carbaryl for leaf min-
ers. This should be repeated in
7 to 10 days for adequate pro-
tection.
If rain fails to come soon
after the application of lawn fer-
tilizer, it should be watered with
a hose. This helps distribute the
fertilizer more evenly andavoids
the problem of fertilizer burn.
Horticulturists with the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food recommend that at least
one Inch of water be applied to
the lawn when fertilizer treat-
ment is being washed in.
