"I just can't stop crying," the pretty grade 12C student said to one lady, but the tears didn't really affect her beaming smile, As has been the case in recent years, the gymnasium gallery was illed to capacity as area residents joined the dance pat- rons to witness the crowning of this year's queen from the seven contestants. And as usual, the name of the Winner was a well-guarded secret until it was announced to the crowd by student council presid- ent Gary Flaxbard. Lynda, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Litt, Exeter, was crowned by last year's win- ner, Brenda Pinney. Roses were presented by Gary Flaxbard and student council vice-president, Shari Robinson, presented each girl with a gift, wiping Lynda's tears away as she passed, The queen and her escort, Paul Mason, Exeter, then started the first dance and were joined by the six other contestants and their escorts. The other girls and their es- corts were: Joan Simmons and Bob Middleton Jr.; Susan Oesch and Bill Dinney; Kathryn Taylor and Edward Restemeyer; Pam Graves and Casey Cook; Judy Estey and Mike Hoy; Sharon Mar- tene and Doug Taylor. Gift Specials for Special Moms Robert Stewart Smith, 20, of RR 4 Brussels, and Michael John Anthony Reynolds, 18, of Clinton, pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping from prison when they appeared in magistrate's court in Goderich, Monday. They were remanded in custody at Huron County Jail until Thurs- day for sentencing. A theft charge against the two was withdrawn. The pair was charged following their escape from Huron County Jail about 6:50 p.m. April 24. Two jail guards were attacked and the keys stolen to a car own- ed by one of the guards, Archie Leopold Watt. Less than six hours later, the pair was arrested in Owen Sound by city police after an OPP of- ficer of the Owen Sound detach- ment followed the stolen car into the city. Smith, at the time of the es- cape, was awaiting transfer to Kingston Penitentiary to serve a five-year sentence for armed robbery. He was convicted April 1 of robbing the Brucefield branch of the Bank of Montreal of $9,144. He also had been given a six- month term for breaking, enter- ing and theft at McGee Garage, GoderiCh, last Oct. 17. The sent- ences were to run consecutively. Reynolds was serving time for breach of probation. great deals ON • LIKE-NEW CARS 64 FAIRLANE 500 V8 automatic, radio E79545 64 CHEVROLET Stationwagon, 6 tyl., stick 30011X 63 MERCURY 4.d Sedan, V-8 oor auto" radio E82148 62 PONTIAC Convertible, radio, V-8 auto., 221 car, in4 new ion, new paint, yellow A8/748 Coming Stan • • I* • 68 AUSTIN A60 Sedan, standard E481041 66 AUSTIN MO Sedan, auto., radio 1174832 SOUTH -END SERVICE tiolee 235402 Goderich police Sgt. Ross Crawford was the only person to testify before Magistrate Glenn Hays. He detailed events lead- ing up to the escape - that the pair had been given permission to go to the jail library. While the two were return- ing to their cell block, Rey- nolds attacked guard Archie Watt with the rung from a wooden chair, Sgt. Crawford testified. He struck Watt over the left ear with the rung, stunning him, then struck him across the shoulder and back and locked him in a cell block with another prisoner. Guard William Freeth, Sgt. Crawford said, was in the gov- ernor's office when he heard loud yelling. Reynolds demand- ed that Freeth give up the key to a grilled steel door through which they later made their escape. Freeth was locked in the wo- men's cell block upstairs. Prior to this, Sgt. Crawford testified, Smith was holdi ng Freeth while Reynolds was mak- ing threats in an attempt to get the keys., He said Smith had no weapon and two or three times stepped in front of Reynolds to prevent him from assaulting the guard. Freeth was requested to open the safe in the main office but the . governor had the keys. The car keys were then taken from Watt's coat in the office, the grilled door was unlocked, and the pair fled.
