A bountiful lunch with good hot tea and coffee did won- ders. Miss Lina Abbott, whom Nature endowed with a loud carrying voice, welcomed the guests, an- nounced the game rules and selected the winners, while Mrs. Gordon Atkinson presented the prizes. Miss Abbott also announced that Mrs. Harvey Hodgins' group would be in charge of the next euchre, Tuesday, December 12. The high score winners were Mrs. Maurice MacDonald and Mr. Heber Davis and lone hand win- ners Mrs. Cecil Neil and Mrs. Rose Atkinson (playing man's card). Mrs. Earl Greenlee won the box of groceries. OLD-TIMERS WIN Len Gaudette, now of Galt, a former Lucan Arena manager, brought honor to himself and to his former Lucan Irish Hockey Team last Friday night, when he assisted in defeating the Zurich "Old-timers" at Zurich to the score of 10-4. Mr. and Mrs. Gaudette and family spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. H, B. Langford. STREET DECORATIONS Once again Lucan's Main St. is ablaze with Christmas lights. All last week workmen were busy placing small trees, with colored lights on poles on Main St. The large tree on Mr. J. S. Rad- cliffe's lawn, which can be seen for miles around. Cochrane building on Main St. and has already opened up his barber shop, where, for so many years, prior to his ill- ness Mr. Cochrane operated his "Bill the Barber" shop, The building contains another small shop next door to the barb- er shop, which has had no steady tenant since Mrs. Fred Windsor moved her "Skylark Beauty Sal- on", to her new home on William St., but has been used for many bake sales, rummage sales, Tops meetings and election booths. The apartment above the stores is at present rented to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hancock and family. For the past ten and one-half years Mr. Holden has been work- ing in the Clarence Lewis barber shop, going there from school in London. Two years ago he mar- ried the former Anne Wilson of London and is now living in the home purchased from Mrs. Dave Egan, Market St. Mrs. F. Liddell dies in hospital Mrs. Frank Liddell, 59, of Concession 16, London Township, passed away in St. Joseph's Hos- pital, Wednesday, November 29. The body rested in the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home, Lucan, until 2 pm Friday, Decem- ber 1, when the Rev. Claude Root, conducted funeral services. Pallbearers included Messrs. Frank DeBlock, Clarence Stan- ley, Jack Ryan, George De Block, Clarence Lewis and Donald Allen. The flower bearers were Messrs. Ken Little and Pete De Block. Mrs. Liddell is survived by her husband, one son, Kenneth, of London Township, two daughters, Marie at home, and Ann (Mrs. Keith Jeffrey) of Kingston and four grandchildren, also two bro- thers and one sister, Messrs. John and George Gard and Mrs. Helen Lucas, all of London. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Gard, Mrs. Lid- dell was the former Gladys Gard. She was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, London Town- ship, and an active member of the Birr WI. Students hold speaking test Thursday and Friday the Stu- dent Council of the Biddulph Cent- ral School sponsored a public speaking contest with one half of the staff acting as judges for the nine boys and the other half for the 10 girls. Michael Wraith was chairman and Don Neil time-keeper for the girl competitors and Nancy Simp- son was chairman and F r a nc e s Elson time-keeper for the boy competitors. It wasn't until Monday morning that the judges announced the fol- lowing winners. Speaking on "T. V." Ed. Mitoraj (Grade 7) was the humorous boy winner. Run- ners up were Dennis Maguire (Grade 8) speaking on "Robert Fulton" and David Latta (Grade 6) who chose "The Beaver" as his topic, Speaking on "The United Na- tions", Ruth Mardlin (Grade 8) was the top girl winner. Runners- up were Kathie Worthington (Grade 8) who gave a humorous talk on "The Young Generation" and Julie Hardy (Grade 8) who chose as her topic "Governor General, George P. Vanier". The Student Council, though not rich in this world's goods, donated as prizes, two silver dollars to each of the top win- ners and one silver dollar and a 50Q piece to each of the run- ners-up. Standards of pink mums form- ed the setting in the Wesley United Church, Highbury, at 6 pm Saturday, Nov. 26, when Helen Lockhart Fitzmorris and Earl E, Carling, exchanged vows and rings in a marriage ceremony with Rev. Gordon Merkley of- ficiating. The bride is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Fitzmorris and the groom is the son of Mrs. Helen Carling of Francis St., Lucan and the late Ira Carling. The bride was married in a two-piece knitted suit of silver and coral wool with matching headpiece and accessories, and a red rose corsage. Her only attendant was Mrs. Douglas Fitzmorris of Ingersoll who chose a beige brocade knit ensemble with black accessories and yellow rose corsage. The best man was Mr. Douglas Fitzmorris of Ingersoll. The church organist provided traditional wedding music. At a reception held in the Legion Hall Lucan, the groom's mother received in a navy double knit gown with navy accessories, and pink and white mum corsage. A beautifully decorated three- tier wedding cake (made by the groom's sister, Miss Muriel Carling of Lucan) made an at- ractive table centre. A honeymoon trip South will be taken in February. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Carling was honored with a large miscellaneous shower held at the home of Mrs. Harold Brown of London. The groom was Lucan's Scout- master for a number of years. Last Sunday, Mrs. Eldon Hodg- son entertained her son, Arthur and family, prior to his birthday, Nov, 29. Leona Finlayson, three-year- old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ron Finlayson of Market St., has re- turned home after a few days visit with her aunt, Mrs. Lou Aikens of Kincardine, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Davis of Moosonee have returned home after a 10 day visit with Mr. & Mrs. Jim Davis and Fred Davis now of Sarnia, spent last Tues- day with his parents. Mrs. Louis Kilmer, now of London, was a weekend guest of Mrs. Harold McFalls, Mrs. Don Whitborne and fam- ily of Mount Brydges were week- end guests of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Avery. Ellen Smout daughter of Dr. & Mrs. Marvin Smout of London, spent the weekend with her grand- mother, Mrs. Wes Atkinson. Owing to so much sickness the Tops meeting, scheduled for Thursday had to be cancelled. Mr. Earl Banting of Kapuskas- ing spent the weekend, with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Banting. Sunday visitors with Mrs. Chris Fischer included Mrs. Lloyd Stanlake and Debra and Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Stanlake Jr. and two daughters, all of London. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott were Sunday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Ken Brock of Thorndale. The first Christmas gift sub- scription was phoned in on Mon- day. Watson and other relatives, Mrs. Erwin Scott, who is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, following a stroke is daily showing signs of improve- ment. Mn, & Mrs, Cecil Armitage, Margaret and Sheila on Sunday attended the 50th wedding cele- bration of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Winegarden of RR 8 Parkhill, held in the Parkhill Community Centre. In the evening they visit- ed London friends. Mrs. Ira Carling and Miss Muriel Carling were Sunday guests of Mr, & Mrs. Earl Carl- ing in their new London home. Mrs. Irene Hicks and Mr. & Mrs. George Miller of Flint, Mich were Sunday guests of Mrs. Harold McFalls. Mr. & Mrs, Clarence Hardy, Mr, & Mrs. Mert Culbert and Mr. & Mrs, Calvin Haskett at- tended the Buffalo Pigeon Ban- quet at Buffalo last Saturday evening. VAC PAC FLORIDA CELERY 2..49° Mrs. Gordon Atkinson, a new Anglican Guild leader, and Miss Lina Abbott, a former leader, who worked so hard for a week to make the first of a series of social evenings and progres- sive euchres a real success, last Tuesday evening were most disappointed and discouraged when the temperature dipped down to 15 degrees, to have so many friends who had prom- ised to attend, phone up and say it was too cold to stir out. How- ever 41 players defied old Jack Frost and arrived at the Parish Hail all set for an evening's real enjoyment. Then on that most inopportune day didn't the oil furnace decide to go on strike and refused to go. During the afternoon, the rector, the Rev. E. 0. Lancaster, was able to locate a repair man who got the furnace operating again, but that furnace didn't give up so easily and kept going off and on all evening. As a re- Church bazaar is huge success Friday night the 196'7 bazaar and tea, sponsored by the Lucan UCW was an outstanding success and the new C. E. addition was also a big asset in providing ample space. On entering the church those attending were ushered into the old school room, which was decorated with elaborate Christ- mas decorations. The members of the UCW must have worked right through from January to December to fill all the booths which lined the four sides of this large room. Conveners for the kitchen were Mrs. John Park and Mrs. Murray Hodgins; tearoom, Mrs. C. H. George; candy, Mrs. Sheridan Revington; confectionary, Mrs. Orville Jones; gifts, Mrs. Emer- son Stanley and Mrs. Erie Young; toys, Mrs. Owen S award; knitting, Mrs. Charles Sovereign; aprons, Mrs. Ross McRoberts; country store, Mrs. Leonard Smith; Christmas tree, Mrs. Les Ken- nedy; hake table, Mrs. A. E. Reilly. Admission to the bazaar was free but those wishing to cross the hall to the tea room (which included almost everyone) paid Mrs. H. B. Langford a 25 ad- mission. In this largeCE school- room, a number of tea tables were centred with artistic cen- tennial arrangements, Guests were served a cold plate, tea, small cakes and tarts. The amount of the net pro- ceeds is not yet available but will be a goodly sum. Bible canvass over last year The Lucan Branch of the Can- adian Bible Society met in the United Church CE Building last Monday evening with the presi- dent, Mrs. Sheridan Revington, presiding. The ReV. E. 0. Lan- caster had charge of the opening and the worship service.
