Robot monitoring is the latest
technique used by OWRC engin-
eers in a continuous watch of
water quality which takes in 330
sampling points across Ontario.
In conjunction with the Com-
mission's Great Lakes quality
survey operations, which this
year involves five vessels, samp-
les from streams tributary to the
Great Lakes are gathered bi-
weekly by OWRC field men.
The aim of the over-all water
quality monitoring program is to
obtain information on monthly,
seasonal and annual variations at
key use points in river systems,
with increased coverage being
given to areas where intensive
use is made of water, especially
for wastewater disposal.
Also, the Commission is de-
veloping a network of stream
flow gauges, so river discharge
information may be combined
with quality data to produce a
detailed picture of pollution and
other problems in drainage
areas.

Crediton was proud to receive
this week centennial greetings
from the town of Crediton in
England. The letter graciously
sent by the Crediton Urban Dist-
riot Council is as follows: "I an
instructed by my Council to send
greetings of the chairman, Coun-
cillors and inhabitants of this
town to your town on the occasion
of the centenary of the Dominion
of Canada.
This town is growing in popu-
lation, but is still short of 5,000
inhabitants. It is, however, a busy
town, with a variety of work and
interest, from agriculture to in-
dustry, from schools to many-
sided social activity, and we trust
that your town will in the future
also continue to expand and to
provide a better life for the in-
habitants. We send our congrat-
ulations and all good wishes for
the future, to your Council, and
the inhabitants of your town.
Yours faithfully, A. II, King
Robinson, Solicitor, Clerk".
Previous correspondence with
the town of Crediton was conduct-
ed in 1954 when they informed us
of the celebration to observe the
twelfth centenary of the martyr-
dom of St. 13oniface, born in
Crediton 680, martyred in Hol-
land '755. The seal of the town
on the stationery used bears a
drawing of a bishop, no doubt
St. Boniface, with his hand raised
in blessing and the words "Selle
of the Borowe Towne of Crediton
1569".

A mechanical "water tester"
will this year begin standing
watch on the St. Clair River, as
the Ontario Water Resources
Commission puts the Province's
first robot water quality moni-
toring device into operation.
The unit, to be located at an
OWRC water pollution control
plant -5,iar Corunna in the Town-
ship of Moore, will continuously
measure a number of chemical
and physical characteristics of
the river, and record the data
on a strip chart.
Looking to the future, it will
be possible to maintain a number
of these recorders across On-
tario, with information t el e-
metered directly to a central
office and punched on tape for
storage and summary by elec-
tronic data processing machines.
About the size of a four-draw-
er filing cabinet, the robot could
measure up to eight character-
istics. The OWRC is reluctant
to publicize exactly what will be
monitored, however, in the in-
terest of obtaining representa-
tive results from the river below
several industrial outfalls.
