Donnelly hotel
coming down
The fate of Lucan's Western
Hotel which has hung in the
balance for so long has now
been decided,
To widen and pave William
St. it was found necessary to
remove this century-old build-
ing, which was once operated by
one of the Donnelly family,
It was hoped that some organ-
ization, as a centennial project,
would remove the building and
preserve this historic landmark,
after an anonymous party sent
$20 to the Free Press but the
Village of Lucan, the Lucan Lions
Club, The Middlesex and London
Historical Society and the Strath-
roy Kiwanis Club each turned
down the project, as the two-
storey building was too high to
move and too expensive to dis-
mantle and rebuild.
With paving begun on the street
something had to be done so the
building was sold to Arnold Lewis
of Clandeboye, who began wreck-
ing it Tuesday.
Mr. Lewis intends building a
house in Clandeboye with part
of the material. The remainder
he hopes to sell.

the fire engine had to get to the
house by Geroge St. Although
firemen were able to save the
walls of the home, the fire was
too far advanced to save any
of the contents, so the family
lost everything, but what they
had on.
An older daughter Mary, and
her husband Mr. Jean Poulin
had been living in a trailer in
London. Just the night before
the fire they had moved the
trailer to Lucan for the sum-
mer. As Mr. & Mrs. Paulin
both work in London, it too,
was unoccupied at the time of
the fire, but it was moved out
of danger.
Mr. & Mrs. Mathers yet have
no idea what they will do. At
present all are living in the
trailer, together. The cause of
the fire is still unknown.

Youngsters lose
cash and watch

ience it is wise to check be-
longings at the swimming pool.
Both girls lost money and Jac-
queline lost her silver wrist-
watch, which her parents had
given her for passing Gr. 8,
at Biddulph Centre School in
June.
Instead of checking her watch,
she stuffed it in the toe of her
shoe, but apparently some one
saw her hide it.
It is hoped their loss will
be a lesson to other children,
especially as either Mr. or Mrs.
Burt will look after children's
money free of charge.
