It's that time of year again when diamonds blossom like tulips on third fingers of left hands, when the mail brings wed- ding invitations and when bridal talk is the prime topic of the day. It's the time for shower-giving and trousseau teas, the time for pink candles and lace cloths and dainty sandwiches and pretty cakes. BRIDE'S CAKE This recipe for bride's cake is a wonderful recipe for this time of year. It is, basically, a light fruit cake, pineapple- flavored and. dressed up in wed- ding finery of sultana raisins, coconut and maraschino cher- ries. 1 cup margarine ur butter 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs 1 tp vanilla 2 3/4 cups once-sifted all-pur- pose flour 2 tp baking powder 1/2 tp salt 1 tp nutmeg 1/4 cup pineapple juice 2 cups sultana raisins 1 cup coconut 1 1/2 cups crushed pineapple, well-drained 3/4 cup maraschino cherries, well-drained and halved Grease a 9-inch spring form pan. Line bottom and sides with three layers of wax paper and grease again. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Sift together flour, baking pow- der, salt and nutmeg. Add to egg mixture alternately with pine- apple juice. Blend well. Stir in raisins, coconut, pineapple and cherries. pour into prepared pan. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until cake tester inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from pan and allow to cool completely. One never has too many cook- ies for such occasions. Here are some recipes: HELLO DOLLY COOKIES 1/4 pound butter or margarine 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 1 cup flaked coconut 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces or peanut butter chips 1 cup chopped nuts 1 cup sweetened, condensed milk This is a one-pan cake. Don't stir ingredients. Just add in layers. Former Exeterite Weds Jane Elizabeth Whitehouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick W. Whitehouse, of Ottawa and Toronto, and Norman Lindsay Knox, son of Rev. and Mrs. Norman D. Knox of Glamvorth, were married in St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church, Leaside, Toronto, Saturday, May 6. Norman's parents were married in this church 2'7 years ago. Norman attended public and high schools in Exeter and is at present in the Armed Forces (Airforce) stationed in North Bay. MARSHMALLOW TOP HATS 1 pkg peanut butter flavor chips 24 marshmallows 1 cup finely chopped nuts Melt chips over hot water, stirring until smooth. Remove from hot water. Dip half of each marshmallow into melted chips; then dip in nuts to coat thor- oughly. Place coated side up on wax paper and let stand at room temperature until firm. Makes 2 dozen confections. Main St. ladies pack two bales Main Street UCW packed and sent two bales last week, one to Wrinch Memorial Hospital, BC, and one to Toronto for overseas relief. Each bale contained five large quilts, four crib quilts all new, along with good used clothing. The bales were packed at the home of the supply convener, Mrs. Cecil Murray. A. number of pupils in this district from Parkhill and Ex- eter High Schools visited Expo at Montreal last week. June 23 is the date for the Strawberry and Ham supper in the United Church. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gardner and family of Newmarket spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. J. Gardner. Several ladies from the United Church attended the Centennial bake sale and tea in Centralia United Church last Wednesday. Rev. Anne Graham of Metro- politan United Church, London, was the guest speaker. Mr, and Mrs. Jack Doerr ac- companied the latter's mother, Mrs. L.M. Raeburn-Gibson to Fete bride-elect at many events Mrs. Stella Taylor entertained at a trousseau tea honoring her daughter, Lorna, whose marriage to Robert Russell will take place in the parlours of James St. Church Friday evening. The groom-elect's mother, Mrs. Earl Russell, received with the hostess and the bride-elect. Crystel and Debbie Cowen were in charge of the guest book. The tea table was decorated in pink and white. Pouring tea were Mrs. Russell Hopper, Mrs. William Allison, Mrs. Harold Taylor and Mrs. Ernest Willard. They were assisted by Mrs. Nor- man Scott, Mrs. George Ley, Miss Joan Batten, Miss Pat Har- ris and Mrs. Dick Weber. It was voted to sell Cystic Fibrosis Christmas cards and hasti-notes again this year and also to buy a camera for use in the Sor- ority. June 21 a bowling party and social evening was planned and also a come-as-you-are coffee party. Assisting the hostess were Mrs. William Batten and Mrs. Kevin Delbridge. planned for June 19 to Kitchener.
