Local students finished first in five different events and the school's senior boys' champ, Al Youngash shares the H-P senior title with Henry Martens of Lis- towel. Youngash was credited with a second place finish by his brother Ron in the 220-yard dash and the day of the meet was declared champion. Ron Bogart, a SHDHS teacher and coach of the boys' team re- ports he has notified Huron-Perth officials of the error and that Al Youngash should be co-champion with Martens. Youngash won the discus and shot put events to tie with the Listowel star who was winner in the 880-yard dash and the one mile distance. Uilke Nagel of the local school finished second in the 100-yard hurdles for senior boys. In the junior division Ron Janke and Shayne McKinnon shared the spotlight for South Huron, each winning one event. Janke was best in the junior high jump, leaping 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches, which is nine inches farther thanhis mark at the local meet. McKinnon ran the 100-yard hurdles in 18.3 with Janke a close second. A week earlier at the SH field day, Janke won the hurdles event, but in Mitchell he finished second to McKinnon. In girls' action, Kathy Mc- Carthy was the only representa- tive of the local school to earn a red ribbon, placing first in the shot put and finishing second in the softball throw. Her shot tra- velled a distance of 26 feet, 5 1/2 inches, almost two inches farther than her effort a week earlier in Exeter. Linda Bowers was 27 -- Mitchell at Zurich 28 — Walkerton at Dashwood Chesley at St. Marys The complete schedule of the Huron-Perth baseball league has been released by secretary John Livermore of Clinton and presid- ent Bob Sadler of Staffa. The league will be composed of six teams, Dashwood, Zurich, Mitchell, St. Marys, Walkerton and Chesley. The latter club will be of junior age and will play a single schedule with all games counting four points while the remainder of the teams will play a double schedule. Following is the schedule with all week-day games starting at 6:30 and Sunday contests at 2:30 unless otherwise noted. PRICED MADE-TO-MEASURE SUIT — ONE EXTRA PAIR OF PANTS OR YOUR ONE PANT SUIT REDUCED TO ONLY With the improvement of the weather over the past few days—which we hope will continue for a couple of months at least—interest in summer sports is picking up. The only intermediate baseball league in the area, the Huron-Perth, held its second meeting of the season earlier this week and a full schedule for the upcoming summer will be found elsewhere on these pages. Bob Sadler, Staffa, long time associated with the popular baseball loop as a player, umpire and executive, will be back as president and John Liver- more of Clinton will continue his secretary-treasurer duties that date back many years. For the first time in about ten years, the league is back to six teams with the re-entry of St. Marys, a town that has failed to field an intermediate club for a few seasons. The five clubs that made up the league last year will be back, namely Zurich Lumber Kings, Dashwood Tigers, Mitchell Legion and junior clubs from Walkerton and Chesley. In minor baseball ranks locally, Alvin Willert reports only a bantam baseball club from Exeter has been entered in WOAA play. A meeting to draw up the bantam schedule for the local grouping is ex- pected later this week. Lorne Haugh and Bill Mac- Lean will be in charge of the 15 years and under boys competing in district action. House leagues for other age group boys and girls will be set up by Willert as soon as the dia- monds become playable. The Exeter Greys are expected to field a strong club in the Huron ladies' softball loop with play getting underway in the next couple of weeks. BOWLING ENDS The local five-pin bowling leagues have com- pleted their playoff activities and only two banquets remain on the schedule. The ladies' league held their presentation feast last night, the Intertown banquet goes in Tavistock Friday and the local men's loop closes off with their banquet next Wednesday. The Itchy Six from Exeter, winners of the tough district intertown league schedule, carried on their winning ways by taking the playoff title by 15 points over runner-up St. Marys. The nucleus of this same Itchy Six crew com- peted recently in the annual Walkerton Invitational tournament and finished second in the "A" cham- pionship bracket coming up with a three-game total of 4,530. This works out to an average of 251 per game for each of the six bowlers. Not bad at all. Making up the roster of the Exeter six were Bob Nicol, Don Couture, Jack Fuller, Eric Matzold, Will Beattie and Bill Farquhar. The event that in- cluded more than 20 teams from much larger cen- tres than Exeter was won by a Kitchener team that amassed a pin total of 4,697, the highest in the 11- year history of the tourney. The Truckers, "B" champs of the Exeter men's bowling league, went on to win the grand championship with a convincing win over the Can- ners, winners of the "A" section. Captained by Joe Campbell, the truckers won their group final by a 208 majority over Jim Brand's Windmills. In the grand championship battle, Camp- bell's trundlers dumped the Canners 5682 to 5428. Don Couture's Canners gained the final as they upset the "A" league winning Seaforth six by a mere 24 pins in a five-game set, coming up with a majority of 85 pins in the fifth game to pull the se- ries out of the fire. Jack Glover's Teenagers are men's consola- tion champs as the result of their win over Jim Fin- nen's 2 x 4's. In ladies' action at the local lanes, Nancy Dowson's Legal Eagles emerged as grand champions with a winning spurt in the final game with the "B" champs, the Jolly Jills, captained by Audrey Zachar. The winning margin of the Eagles was some 76 pins. The Happy Gals led by captain Dot Munroe won the ladies' consolation trophy by downing Audrey Clarke's Sputniks in a special playoff. FISH ARE SCARCE The opening of the pike and pickerel season locally was very quiet due mainly to the lack of co- operation from the weatherman. It was the fish and not the fishermen that were lacking in enthusiasm. Water was high and quite dirty in most of the area rivers and streams, accounting for the scarcity of good catches. According to reports, Roy Hunter of town was able to land a three-pound pike in the Devil's Elbow area over the weekend for the largest catch in the district. Hunter also hooked a couple of smaller pike but returned them to the river. HELP FOR GOLFERS A lot of calculating and ciphering previously handled by secretaries of the many golf clubs across Canada is being eliminated by a service offered by the Bank of Montreal. The Bank of Montreal has thrown open its computer service to handicap chairmen and their committees right across the country. Bill Lain of the local bank staff reports the service is available to any of the local golf organiza- tions and individual handicap cards will be provided for members. Twice monthly, participating golf clubs will receive summaries of members' handicaps calculated at the bank's "Genie centres" in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Clubs and golfers will be able to use these summaries both to ascertain the handicap and to post new scores. 79 90 Exeter Lawn Bowling Club SPECIAL! 11 STOCK SUITS 1/2 PRICE AS LOW AS 25.00 GRAND OPENING WEDNESDAY MAY 24 - 2.
