Dashwood WI chooses officers;
EUB ladies learn of UC work
members present and 28 from
Grand Bend. The Sunshine and
flower committee is Mrs. Henry
Eagleson and Mrs. Mervyn Tie-
man. Mrs. Stuart Wolfe's group
is in charge of the lunch for the
men's rally April 19. The WSWS
convention is April 26 and 27 at
Elmira. Delegates are Mrs.
Gordon Bender, Mrs. Chas. Snell,
Mrs. Mervyn Tieman, Mrs. Mer-
rill James, and Mrs. Carl Oes-
treicher. Lunch served by Mrs.

in Victoria Hospital, London,
April 1 was the husband of Olive
S. Willert, formerly of Dashwood.

orial chapel, London, where Rev.

progressive euchre in Aberdeen
Kirkton, Monday evening.
Prize winners were ladies'
high, Mrs. Roy Pepper; lone
hands, Mrs. Myrtle Doupe; men's

Lawrence Beckett.

The Youth Fellowship of Dash-
wood attended the Stratford Dis-
trict banquet at Crediton Satur-
day evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Clayton Ptile re-
turned home last Thursday after
an extended motor trip through
the Eastern and Central United
States travelling nearly 4,000
miles with Mr. & Mrs, Arthur
Koessel of Lansing, Mich. They
went via Lewiston, N.Y, down
the Shenandoah Valley to Florida
where they spent a week visiting
relatives and friends, also enjoy-
ing the warm sunshine and visit-
ing many historical sites and oth-
er places of interest.
Mrs. Wm. Ziler was honored at
the home of her son, Mr. John
Ziler on Sunday in London on the
occasion of her birthday. Other
guests were Mr. Wm. Ziler,
Miss Albena Bedard, Miss Dol-
oris Bedard, Mr. & Mrs. Jack

The April meeting of Dashwood
WI was in charge of the execu-
tive. This was also the annual
meeting. The president, Mrs.
Glen Webb presided for the busi-
ness.
For a centennial project the
ladies are adopting an orphan in
India. Achievement Day for the
4-H will be April 29 in Exeter.
The WI made eight pair of pyja-
mas for the Children's Aid from
material provided by the Aid.
Mrs. Syd Baker reported on the
executive meeting held in Hen-
sall. The District Annual will be
in Crediton May 17.
Reports were heard from the
president, secretary-treasurer,
and conveners of standing com-
mittees. Mrs. Syd Baker con-
ducted the election of officers.

CORRECTION
In the obituary of William J.
Boyle last week (April 6) his age
should have been 56 years and he
had spent 14 years with Kelvin-
ator of London.
In the survivors one brother,
Michael, of Toronto was omitted.
Pallbearers were Edward Mc-
Laughlin, Paul Roller, Benedict
Morrissey, KenC arter, Cliff Cul-
bert and Harold Ryan.

Word was received here of
the death of Meredith Bice, 59,
in Florida. He was born at Clan-
deboye, son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Eli Bice of a family of six
boys and one girl. He attended
Clandeboye School and L u c a.n
High School and graduated from
a law school in Detroit. He moved
to Charlevoix, Michigan where
he was prosecuting at tor n e y.
Four years ago he suffered a
stroke. He moved to Ormond
Beach, Florida.
He is survived by his wife,
Joan, two daughters (Barbara)
Mrs. James Capalongo and Mi.s.
Garry Parmenter, Detroit and
Garland Bice and Mrs. Gretta
Williams, Detroit. He was pre-
deceased by brothers Perry,
and Harold, London, Austi n,
Clandeboye, Stevenson (Enson)
London.

Enthusiasm for the Centen-
nial is still much to the fore in
the district. Birthday parties in
a Centennial theme were enjoyed
by Misses Nola and Rebecca
Fulcher, RR 1 Kirkton, on their
respective birthdays. The parlor
games, dancing, and supper were
all in 1867 style. Twenty young
guests, dressed in century-old
fashions, attended from Exeter
and Usborne Township.
Mrs. Cecil Dobson is spending
a few days in Women's College
Hospital, Toronto.
Members of Kirkton United
and Anglican churches partici-
pated in the Hymn Festival Sun-
day evening at St. Mary's United
Church.
UCW AND WSWS MEET
The United Church ladies of
Grand Bend were in charge of
the April meeting of the WSWS
of the Evangelical UB church.
Mrs. Garnet Patterson was
chairlady and gave the call to
worship, "The Purpose of the
United Church Women". Mrs.
Keyes read the scripture. Mrs.
Marlene Brenner sang and Mrs.
Alex Hamilton lead in prayer.
Mrs. Allen Miller also sang.
The president, Mrs. Wellwood
Gill conducted their business.
The centennial hymn was sung
by Mrs. Pat Kading and Mrs.
Marlene Brenner.
Vice-president, Mrs. Letta
Taylor, presided for the EUB
business. She thanked the United
Church ladies. There were 28
was born on a farm north of
Granton and moved to a farm
south of Lucan in 1918. She has
been a member of the choir at
St. James Church since 1942;
a Sunday School teacher for 20
years; president of the Women's
Auxiliary for 13 years and pres-
ident of the Clandeboye Women's
Institute for two years.
Euchre was played. Mrs. Rob-
ert Latta, president of the Guild
read an address of good wishes
and they were presented with a
kitchennette table and six chairs.
Mr. Carter spoke their apprecia-
tion.
This couple will be missed a
great deal, as they took such
interest in all activities of the
community and church.
They sold their farm to Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Groenwegen and
family, RR 6 Parkhill who took
up residence April 3.
Refreshments were served by
the Guild.
MAID CARS
WA AND GUILD MEETING
Mrs. Arnold Lewis entertained
the WA and Guild of St. James
Church. Mrs. Andy Carter pre-
sided for WA. Scripture read by
Mrs. Emily Tomes.
The 80th annual meeting of the
WA at St. Paul's Cathedral will
be held April 25 and 26.
Mrs. Carter who has been
president of the WA for 13
years was presented with a cup
and saucer at the meeting with
'all good wishes to be with her
in her new home at Exeter.
GOING AWAY PARTY
A going-away party for Mr.
and Mrs. Andy Carter was held
Tuesday, March 28 by the friends
and neighbors at their Centennial
farm.
Mr. Carter has been on St.
James Cemetery committee for
25 years and has been super-
intendent for five years, four as
Warden. He is the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Carter.
The couple were married in
1940 and celebrated their twenty-
fifth anniversary in 1965 with a
banquet at Dufferin House in Cen-
tralia, a surprise by their close
relatives.

Mrs. Richard Thomas Raycraft
afternoon and evening and April
15 at Dufferin House, Centralia.
Miss Nancy Kestle spent the
weekend with her friend Mss
Jennie Strapp at Hyde park.

spent Sunday with Mr. & Mrs.
Clarence Millson and family.
Mr. & Mrs. James Hornell of
Buchans, Newfoundland are visit-
ing the former's parents, Mr. &
Mrs. Robert Hornell.
Miss Maryhelen Cunningham
has successfully passed her hair-
dressing examinations. She has
accepted a job and is working as
a licensed hairdresser at Paul's
Hair Salon, Maryhelen has been
living with her aunt and uncle,
Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Blake for
the past year.
Mrs. Charlie Coughlin and
daughters Kathy and Karen visit-
ed Mr. Coughlin Saturday night in
St. Joseph's Hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Millson, sons
Donald, Kenneth and Douglas
were visitors with Mr. & Mrs.
Clarence Millson and Mr. & Mrs.
Gerald Millson and Debbie, Sun-

OVERLOADED BUS
Councillor Cleave Coombs told
council that up to 93 pupils were
being carried on a bus with a
capacity of 72 passengers on one
of the runs to the new school
at Brucefield and asked con-
cerning the safety of the pupils
involved which he said he under-
stood included 60 pupils out of
Egmondville.
Councillor Coombs reported
that the drain in front of Gordon
Hulley's had not been cleaned
out as requested. Council will
look into this matter when they
make their tour of township
roads.

Paul Stapleton asked concern-
ing by-laws to cover line fences
and animals at large. He was re-
ferred to the Clerk to secure
forms so as to obtain the aid of

regarding a resolution concern-
ing the collection and distribu-
tion of monies for grants to the
library, whether they should be
levied according to population
or assessment and was in-
structed to write for further in-
formation as council felt the
resolution was not clearly word-
ed.

cil from the Ausable River Con-
servation Authority to attend
a meeting to be held in Lucan on
April 14 with A. Hook as speaker.
TENDER FOR BRIDGE
Tenders for a reinforced con-
crete bridge over the Broadfoot
drain at lot 2'7, concession 4,
London Road Survey, were op-
ened.
McCann Brothers Construc-
tion, Dashwood, tender was for
$6,717.50, work to be finished
68 days after approval given
for tender.
Kelly and Maloney Contract-
ing Company of Stratford tend-
ered for $11,948.63, with com-
pletion October 15,
Ronald Savile Construction
Ltd. of Stratford quoted$5,938.20
with the work to be finished by
June 15 and McLean Foster Con-
struction Ltd. of St. Marys ten-
dered at $8,679.13, completion
July 1.
The engineers estimate for
the bridge was $5,800.00.
Council accepted the Savile
tender at $5,938.20,
Mr. W. Archibald who design-
ed the bridge answered many
enquiries concerning the con-
struction of the bridge. He is
to negotiate for the cement and
steel as the Savile Company does
not provide this. Mr. Archibald
will also determine whether tern-
ent is to be redi-mix. The road
superintendent will contact En-
gineer Wilmot from Stratford to
