MURLEY LEADS In the opening round Friday in Georgetown, Steve Murley was mainly responsible for the Exeter win. The diminutive youngster scored the first goal of the first game in which his club lost 3-2 and came back with a pair of scores in the last four minutes of play of the second game. Murley's duo of goals gave the Exeter club a 3-1 decision and a 5-4 edge on the round. Jim Guenther and Larry Haugh scored the other two goals for the locals in the Forest series. Exeter bantams were unable to overcome a four goal deficit in the first period and dropped an 0-4 decision to Levack in the first of a two-game total goal series Wednesday morning in a semi-final round of the annual. Georgetown bantam tournament. The Wednesday game was ace tually played in Acton as the ice plant at the Georgetown arena failed, late Tuesday night. The second half of the series was played after press time Wednes- day. After falling behind in the open- ing period, the locals held their own throughout the balance of the contest and missed many good scoring opportunities, especially in the last ten minutes of play, The Levack boys were able to finish off most of their chances around the net while the Exeter- ites failed to finalize a lot of their plays. Brad Klumpp scored the first Exeter goal early in the second and then Jim Guenther took over the scoring reigns, adding a single marker later in the same period and scoring twice in the final frame. The locals eliminated Forest 5-4 in a two game total goal series in the first round, Friday and moved on with a thrilling 8-7 win over ListOwel, with the deciding goal coming after six minutes of sudden-death over- time play, Saturday. WIN IN OVERTIME The final win Saturday night by 8-7 on the series was accom- plished on the strength of Larry Haugh's neat effort in moving through the defense after taking Jim Guenther's pass and deicing the goalie out of position to flip the winner home at 6.06 of sudden-death overtime. Exeter had won the first game in the morning 4-2 and the Lis- towel boys came back to lead 5-3 after three periods of play in the nightcap to force extra action. The overtime play was excit- ing with first one team and then the other having golden scoring opportunities. Only seconds be- fore Haugh's break-up marker, Exeter goalie Mike McLaughlin stopped Listowel's David Biehn on a clean cut breakaway dash and kept his mates in the con- test. J i m Guenther started I h e Exeter boys off on the right foot with a successful shot cul- minating a three-way passing ef- fort with linemates John Guenther and Larry He ugh at the 30 second mark of the initial period. Four minutes later, Listowel's Kim Bell evened the game score at 1-i and put his mates within one of tying the round. In the second session the teams broke even, Pete Glover regis- tering for Exeter and Ron Scholl replying for the opposition. A quick goal by David Biehn early in the third put Listowel in front 3-2 in the game. Scholl was back with his second of the game at 12.24 to square the round at 6-6. The locals rebounded quickly and John Guenther found the range at 13.12. With only a minute and 48 seconds to go in regulation time, Guenther's goal looked like the winner, but Listowel weren't finished yet. Only 11 seconds later, Ron Scholl completed his hat trick performance and sent the series into overtime. In Exeter's 4-2 win Saturday petit% in the "D" division. Grand Bend had the distinction of playing the first game of the tourney in which 100 teams are participating, The resort young- sters rapped Blyth 7-1 onThurs- day and met Ilderton Wednesday afternoon in the second round. Jack Stanlake was the big gun for the Bend boys scoring on four occasions, Single markers from the sticks of David Kemp, Harry Smits and Peter Back completed the seven goal winners total. Th e Lucan Irish six came through with a convincing 5-0 win over Belmore in a second round contest Monday night after squeezing by plattsville in an afternoon game, The game ended in a 4-4 draw but Lucan advanced on the strength of a superior shot on goal record of 19-6, Randy Fnglish, still of novice age, was the scoring star for Lucan potting two goals in each game after missing the first period of the opening contest due to his participation in a novice tourney in Strathroy. Jeff Park scored twice and Dennis Wraith notched a single to complete the Irish counting in the win over Belmore. Hensall's entry were late starters and their first game wasn't until after press time, yesterday. Grand Bend minor hockey clubs hold down favorable positions in the North Lambton league semi- final playoffs, The squirt club, handled by Don Flear and Murray DesJardins, held Kettle Point to a 1-1 tie in the first game of a total goals series last week and the two clubs meet tonight, Thursday in Thed- ford in the deciding contest. Danny Stanlake fired the lone GB marker in the opening game. Goals by Harry Smits and Jack Stanlake gave the Grand Bend pee wees a 2-1 win over Kettle point and a one goal margin to carry into the second game of a total goals set to be played in Thedford Saturday at 1.00. The summer resort bantams gained a 3-3 draw with the Thedford-Bosanquet Combines in the first game of a similar semi- final series and will resume play Saturday at 2.00 at the Thedford arena. Brian Bestard, Kyle Harrison and Doug Jennison scored a single goal apiece to account for the Grand Bend total. Randy Gilfillan scored the Exeter marker in the first stanza to gain a 1-1 tie for his club. Brian Langelle, Clinton's top scorer with four goals to his credit, broke the game wide open with three successful shots in the middle frame without a reply from Exeter. C aptain Peter Kleinstiver notched the only other score for the locals at 4.39 of the third period as he tipped in a pass from Perry Stover in a scramble around the Clinton net. Peter Jantzi scored twice and Peter Hesse on one occasion to account for the Zurich tallies. Dart play nears end OPEN • this Sunday, Wednesday afternoon • and during the evening throughout the week. The event limited to house league players that did not par- ticipate in WOAA or OMHA com- petition, drew 11 teams from Brussels, St. Marys, Listowel and Exeter in novice, pee wee, bantam and midget divisions. St. Marys boys were victor- ious in pee wee and midget classes, while Exeter captured the bantam crown and Brussels were successful in novice. In the 10 years and under novice group, the Brussels kids shut out Listowel 9-0 and Exeter 5-0 to win the championship. Exeter downed St. Marys 1-0 in a pre- liminary contest. The pee wee final produced the best game of the day as St. Marys and Listowel battled to a 2-2 tie. Rather than using the usual shots on goal to produce a winner in case of a draw, a rather novel method was used. Two players from each team were given an opportunity to try a penalty shot and the cement town boys scored on both tries while Listowel went scoreless. Listowel had gained the final round with a convincing 7-1 win over Exeter. The lone Exeter marker was fired by Bill Van Bergen. Larry Bourne collected a hat trick to lead the Exeter bantams to the championship by way of their 6-2 win. John Krampp added a pair and Ron Brintnell chipped in with a single to complete the winners total. In the first round contest St. Marys were victorious over Listowel 6-3. St. Marys were easy winners of the midget competition down- ing their only opposition from Exeter 6-0, The winners of Tuesday's play- off here move on to meet the northern zone champs in Lis- towel today. 5 74 0 45 5 50 0 25 BANTAM BOYS TI (R.
