Excel in public speaking

WI hear of health unit Lucan
and district news The February meeting of the
Lucan Women's Institute, sche-
duled for February 18, which had
to be postponed owing to one of
February's bad blizzards, was
held Thursday afternoon, with the
President Mrs. T. A, Watson in
the chair, In spite of the cold
day, 14 members answered the
roll call,

It was voted to continue to help
support the same adopted child.
For some years the WI donated
a $10 bursary to a LucanGrade 8
worthy student, but now that Lu-
can Sr. pupils attend Biddulph
Central, it was decided to drop
the bursary.
The meeting was turned over
to Mrs. Wes Hodgins, convener
of Public Relations, who spoke
on "Alberta", instead of the
motto printed in the program.
"Sunny Alberta", she said, was
the fourth largest province of
Canada. She spoke of its growth
in population, industry, farming,
water development, oil, gas, fish-
eries and round-up.
She then introduced Reeve Mrs.

Bank makes plan
for new building
A. F., Reilly, who spoke on "The
Health Unit", touching on the
duties of the Medical Health Of-
ficer, the Public Health nurses
and the inspection of schools and
nursing homes.
The second guest speaker,
Mrs. C. H. George was unable
to be present, in person, but
sent her paper, on "The Local
Library" which Mrs. Hodgins
read, in it she enumerated the
changes and growth of the Lucan
Library and spoke of the new
Central Library being erected at
Arva,
Mrs. Frank Hardy anti Mrs,
Frank Joliffe were in charge
of refreshments.
During the business session it
was decided to hold another joint
euchre with the Olandeboye WI
Wednesday evening, March 1,
with each to share in expenses
and net profits. Lucan's convener
and assistant will be Mrs. Sher-
idan Revington and Mrs. Ira Carl-
ing.
Weight watchers
lose 13 pounds
The Lucan Streamliners met at
the home of the co-leader, Mrs.
Wayne Hockey, last Wednesday
evening.
Leader Mrs. Eldon Hopps, pre-
sided and 10 members answered
the roll call by each reporting on
the number of pounds lost or
gained during the past week. The
total loss was 13 1/2 pounds.
The date was set for March
10 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. for the
bake sale to be held in the
Nevin Motors.
Joyce, of Joyce's Beauty Salon, Lucan, in apprecia-
tion of 10 years of faithful patronage would like to say,

Ltd. has been awarded the gen-
eral contract for construction
of new premises for the Bank
Of Montreal's Lucan branch.
Ian Dallas, the branch man-
ager, said the Lucan-based com-
pany will start the project later
this month, with completion ex-
pected in July. London archi-
tect R. E. Murphy designed the
building.
The B of M's new office will
be erected adjacent to the ex-
isting premises, which will be
demolished when the new quart-
ers are occupied.

streamlined counter with three
tellers' wickets and two private
coupon booths for safety-deposit

WEDDING POSTPONED
The Lewis-Carter wedding
scheduled for 2:30 pm Saturday
Feb. 25, in the Lucan Anglican
church had to be postponed until
7 pm Monday Feb. 27 owing to
impassable roads. The Ladies'
Guild, in charge of the dinner,
had set the tables Friday even-
ing and cooked the turkeys Sat-
urday forenoon. Most of those
in charge of the dinner lived in
the country and all were storm-
ed in. However the roads were
opened up in time for the Mon-
day wedding.

Bank of Canada, which later
merged with the B of M.
Mr. Dallas has been manager
for the past two years, formerly
having been accountant of a St.
Thomas branch.

pete for further honors, at Glen-
coe, Friday March 3,
Gerard Mitchell, a six-year-
old, St. Patrick's School, Grade I
pupil, probably the youngest con-
testant to ever participate in a
public speaking contest, really
stole the show, Friday night, in
a contest, sponsored by the Lucan
Branch of the Royal Canadian
Legion and held in the Legion
Hall, here.

Prime Minister, stood up and in
a loud clear voice, told the story
of "Moisa the Unsinkable Horse".
In spite of the fact he com-
peted against 13 Grade 4 to Grade
6 pupils, including his brother
Joe and sister Ruth, the judges,
Mrs. Gordon Stronach and two
London teachers, William Sav-
age and Andy Chisholm, awarded
him the third prize of $2,

hear teacher
At the February meeting of
the Biddulph Area Parents' and
Teachers' Association, held in
the Biddulph Central school, last
Wednesday evening a represen-
tative from each room was chosen
to assist the association, when,
and where necessary.
Mr. Bazil Sims was appointed
to the executive to fill a vacancy.
It was announced a red measles
immunization clinic w o u 1 d be
available after Easter.
The guest speaker, was Miss
Wilma Harris, the Bi d du 1p h
School teacher of the Opportun-
ity Class. She was introduced by
Mrs, Garfield Nixon and later
thanked by Mrs. Ken Hardie,
Miss Harris explained the pur-
pose and work of an Opportunity
Class and invited all present to
visit her room and see the work
of her pupils, during the serving
of coffee.
There was a good attendance
at the meeting in spite of the
cold inclement weather.

Area students
help win test
Medway High School made a
sr lendid showing at the London
hiwanis Music Festival last
week, when Mr. Alec Clark's
nine entries won six firsts, two
seconds and a third.
The first were, concert band,
two trumpet solos, by Brian
Telfer of Ilderton, a brass sex-
tet, French horn by Lois Legg,
Birr and Lynn Davidson's, clar-
inet solo.
The seconds were, a brass
band, and a brass quartette and
the third was a saxophone solo
number.
Lucan students, who assisted
in bringing honor to their school,
were Jane Corbett, French horn;
Bonnie Bobor , clarinet; Wendy
Cronkite, saxophone and Joyce
Butler, clarinet.
Announce best
in euchre play
Mrs. Evan Hodgins of RR 1
Lucan was the most lucky win-
ner at the LOL Euchre held in
the lodge room last Wednesday
evening. She won the ladies' lone
hand prize and also the box of
groceries.
Others winners were: High
score, Mrs. Harry Webber, Mr.
Allan Berry; men's lone hand,
Mr. Lawrence Beckett and low
score, Mrs. Lawrence Beckett
and Mr. Tommy Ryan.
The next game will be March
8.

for bake sale
The Lucan-Clandeboye CGIT
met in the UC schoolroom last
Tuesday evening. Being the last
call for bale articles, a grand
donation of clothing was re-
ceived. Flannelette was given
out to the "Middy Maids", who
promised to have diapers made
by next Wednesday.
Judy Froats led in two new
games learned at the recent Lon-
don rally. A letter was read by
Mrs. Hodgins from her friend
Miss Muriel Bissell who is doing
social service work in Kitwe,
Zambia.
A work meeting for girls, who
have finished their exams, will
be held in the schoolroom, Sat-
urday, March 11 at 1:30 pm to
assemble Christmas cards to be
sent to Zambia and to make scrap
books for the War Memorial
Hospital.
Owing to exams no meeting
will be held until March 14 when
the film "By the King—A Pro-
clamation" will be shown. Nancy
Park led in a sing-song.
The worship service was taken
by Judy Froats and Linda Hod-
gins. The girls then divided into
groups to continue their study
period.
4TH EXPEDITION
The Lucan-Clandeboye Ex-
plorers held their 4th Expedition
in the UC schoolroom last Mon-
day evening with 29 Explorers and
four counsellors present.
The expedition opened with
games in charge of Mrs. George
Kraul, Mrs. McRoberts led in a
sing-song and taught the Indian
"Huron Carol." Mrs. Mohr told
the story entitled, "History of
Fairfield".
Debbie Holmes and Suzanne
Leckie and Mrs. McRoberts were
in charge of the worship ser-
vice.
Lions fete
pucksters
The Lucan Lions were hosts
to the House League hockey teams
and their fathers in Holy Trinity
Anglican church basement last
Monday evening. There were 116
in attendance.
Each boy present was pres-
ented with a hockey crest and
each father, a Lion's Club ash
tray, Lion Don Hodgins, on behalf
of the Club, presented past pres-
ident Lion Wes Colley, with Lion
Club cuff links and tie clip.
The guest speaker was Dennis
Riggin of London, former goal
tender of the Detroit Red Wings.
He was introduced by Lion Clare
Stanley. He spoke on hockey arid
showed a film of the 1966 final
and semi-final Stanley Cup
games.
All business was postponed
until next meeting.
The House League Hockey is
sponsored by Ilderton and Lucan
Lions and comprises six teams,
Eagles, Irish six, Bears and
Beavers from Lucan and Wild-
cats and Rams from Ilderton,
Last Saturdays results: Eagles
7, Beavers 0; Irish Six 2, Wild-
cats 2 and Bears 4, Rams 2.

received a mark of 85 at the
London Xlwartis Music Festival
held at Clarke Rd. School London,
last Wednesday.
BOWLING TOURNAMENT
LaSt Sunday, two teams from
Delaware , Mount Brydges,
Strathroy and Lucan Auxiliary
of the Royal Canadian Legion,
participated in the zone bowling
tournament held at the Lucan
Lanes.
The Lucan teams came third
and fourth. They were beaten by
Strathroy's two teams who Came
first and second,

Mrs. Millie HaSkett, is now a
patient at the StirmySide Nursing
Home, Strathroy.
Mr. & Mrs. Evan Hodgins Fri-
day attended the funeral of the
former's cousin, Mr. Wilfred F.
Walls 72, of RR 1 Hyde Park
who was killed when he fell from
the rear of a truck which he
was loading with hay and broke
his neck.
Leroy Revington, driving
Midge Diamond, won the invita-
tion race at Weetern Fair Race-
way last Saturday.
Mr. Clarence /ledgers of Frank
St., is able to be home after
undergoing two operations at Vic-
toria Hospital, London,
Harold Herbert, son of Mr. &
Mrs. ROyden Herbert, who under-
went an appendix Operation last
week in St. Joseph's Hospital,
is making satisfactory recovery.
