was butter maker
George Jaques, 87, a resident
of Tavistock since May 1963, died
at his home, 77 Woodstock St.
North, early Sunday morning of
January 29 after a six - day ill-
ness. He was a son of the late
Solomon and Mrs. Jaques and was
born Sept. 10, 1879 in Usborne
Township, Huron County.
Mr. Jaques was a graduate of
the Ontario Agricultural College
Dairy School, Guelph and was a
butter maker at the Winchelsea
and Exeter Creameries prior
Glen Rutherford
dies in Chatham
Glen Cameron Rutherford, 72,
a lifelong resident of Blenheim,
died in Chatham General Hospital
Friday February 3 following a
lengthy illness.
He was married to the former
Gertrude Spackman and he and
his wife and daughter spent many
summers at their cottage, Grand
Bend.
He was formerly associated
with the Rutherford Milling Com-
pany of Blenheim and was later a
travelling sales representative
for the Northern Coal Co. until
his retirement five years ago.
He was an honorary member of
Blue Lodge AF/AM; a member of
Royal Arch Masons and former
member of Blenheim Rotary
Club. He was a member of Blen-
heim Baptist Church.
Surviving, besides his wife are
daughter, Mrs. Donald (Marjorie)
Br ow n, Grosse Point Woods,
Mich., two granddaughter, Margo
and Shelley Brown, one sister,
Miss Jessie Rutherford, Blen-
heim, two brothers, John of Blen-
heim and Dr. Wilfred of Sarnia.
Funeral service was conducted
Monday, February 6 at the J. L.
Ford funeral home with interment
in Evergreen cemetery, Blen-
heim.

resided for 33 years. At Exeter
he was a member of Main St.
United Church where he was an
Elder. At the time of his death
he was, an Honorary Elder of that
church. In Tavistock Mr, Jaques
was a member of Knox United
Church.
On Sept. 1, 1904 he married
the former Bertha Hern, who
survives together with one daugh-
ter Mrs. James H. (Ina) Francis,
Tavistock; one s is t e r; Mrs.
Gertrude Knox, Stratford; t w
grandchildren Mrs. Melvin Kelly
and Peter J. Francis and one
great-grandaugtiter Patricia Ann
Kelly all of Tavistock. He was
predeceased by one sister and
three brothers.
The late Mr. Jaques rested
at the Francis Funeral Home.
Tavistock where a service was
held Tuesday afternoon with Rev.
James Warden, minister of Knox
United Church, Tavistock assist-
ed by Rev. A. E. Holly of Kit-
chener officiating.
Interment was in Exeter
C emetery.
Friends and relatives attended
from Exeter, Kitchener, Guelph,
Grimsby, Wyoming, Port Elgin,
London, Detroit, Dundas, Wheat-
ley and surrounding district. Call

The annual congregational
meeting of the United Church
was held February 1 in the Sun-
day School rooms. Rev, Douglas
Warren conducted a brief de-
votional, then Mrs. Lorne Presz-
cater was appointed recording
steward.
The reports of the various or-
ganizations as prieted in the an-
nual report were observed and
accepted. Rev. Warren expressed
appreciation to all those assisting
in the work of the church in any
way. He also outlined plans for

the coming months which include
joint Holy Week services with the
RUB Church, and a churchpicnic

Ideas for a Centennial project
were discussed. It was decided
to celebrate the anniversary of
the church on May 28, with both
a morning and an evening ser-
vice.
No change was made in the
elders, trustees, ushers and
auditors. Those elected to the
Board of Stewards for a three-
year term were Mr. Lorne Hodge,
Mr. Cliff Russell, and Mrs. Lorne
Preszcator. Treasurers for the

Thomas Brock
Usborne farmer
Thomas Brock, 83, of Kirkton
died suddenly at his home Thurs-
day, February 2.
He was born in Exeter, son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Brock. He was an active member
of Kirkton United Church.
His wife, the former Etna
Copeland, predeceased him in
1926. Surviving are one son,
Russell of Cromarty, three
daughters, Mrs. George (Greta)
Hagh, St. Marys; Mrs. Florence
Berry, London; Mrs. John
(Verna) McElrea, Kirkton, also
seven grandchildren and eight
great grandchildren; a brother,
Fred, of Hensall and three sis-
ters, Mrs. Jennie Davis, Exeter,
Mrs. Mary Clarke, London and
Mrs. Edna Swartz, Toronto.
Funeral services were con-
ducted Saturday, February 4 at
the Hopper-Hockey funeral home,
Exeter, with interment in Exeter
cemetery.

is February 10, at 3 p.m. in the
United Church. Bandages made
for a mission hospital are to be
brought in at the March meeting.
A bazaar and tea will be held in
the Township Community Hall
Saturday, April 15.
Lunch was served by Mrs. Hugo
Schenk, Mrs. Ray Morlock, Mrs.
Leonard Wein and Miss Clara
Gaiser.
ENJOY RIDE
Last Friday evening the Credi-
ton Cuhs and Scouts invited their
parents to share an evening of
fun. The group, about ninety in
number, drove to the farm of
Mr. Henry Pfaff on the Second
Concession. With his fine team
of Percherons Mr. Pfaff took his
guests on a sleigh ride across
the fields. Those awaiting their
turn for a ride enjoyed a tour of
the stable.
Afterward the entire group re-
turned to the Community Hall for
a baked bean supper.

held their regular monthly meet-
ing last Thursday evening. Mrs.
Ray Morlock and Mrs. Howard
Zurbrigg were in charge of the
program the theme of which was
"Affluence and Poverty, Dilem-
ma for Christians".

J. J. Burke
dies in Exeter
The father of two Exeter busi-
nessmen, John Joseph Burke,
died in South Huron Hospital,
Monday. He had been a patient
for one week. He was 75.
Mr. Burke was born in New-
castle-on-Tyne, England, and
came to Canada during World I.
He settled in Barrie and took up
the trade of a butcher.
He moved to Peterboro 18
years ago and had been retired
for about the past 10 years. He
took up residence with his son,
John, in Exeter in November.
Mr. Burke was predeceased
by his wife.
Surviving are four sons, Ed
and John, Exeter; David, Morris,
Manitoba; Stan, Barrie; one
daughter, Mrs. Tony (Patricia)
Usselman, Toronto; one sister
in Toronto and one brother and
three sisters in Newcastle-on-
Tyne, England.
The funeral service will be
held today (Thursday) at the Jen-
nett Funeral Home, Barrie, with
interment in the Barrie ceme-
tery.
Charles Waghorn
dies in Clinton
Charles Waghorn, 81, a resid-
ent of Exeter for over 25 years,
died in Huronview, Clinton, Sat-
urday, February 4.
The deceased was the last of a
family of ten of the late Mr, and
Mrs. Richard Waghorn, of Full-
erton Township on the boundary
line between Fullerton and Us-
borne.
In 1928 he was married to
Flossie Neil of Usborne Town-
ship. They lived in Kirkton before
moving to Exeter 27 years ago.
Surviving besides his wife is
one son, William Waghorn, Kirk-
ton.
Funeral services were con-
ducted by Rev. S. E. Lewis at
the Hopper-Hockey funeral home,
Exeter, on Tuesday, February 7,
with interment in St. Paul's Ang-
lican cemetery, Kirkton.
Pallbearers were Messrs
Charles Coward, Harold Broder-
ick, Go rnet Shipman, Ross Tay-
lor, Gerald Paul and liar old
Davis.
LADIES CONDUCT SERVICE
Sunday was World Service Day
in the EUB Church. Mrs. Ervine
Ratz, president of the WSWS was
in charge of the morning service.
Mrs. Gordon Finkbeiner read the
Scripture, and Mrs. Howard Zur-
brigg led in prayer.
The speaker was Miss Audrey
F inkbeine r, missionary- o n -
furlough. Her message was based
on the New Testament story of the
conversion of Cornelius.
At the evening meeting, con-
ducted by Mrs. Zurbrigg, Miss
Finkbeiner showed films of her
work, and of life on the island of
St, Lucia, Mrs. Harold Fahner,
Mrs. Alvin Finkbeiner and Rev.
Zurbrigg sang "Others",

Rest Home fell and broke a bone
in her arm. She is recuperating
at her home.
PERSONALS
The theme of the 4-H Girls'
spring club is "World of Food in
Canada". The first meeting is
scheduled for Saturday, February
11, at 1:30 p.m. in the Community
Hall. Girls who will be twelve
years old by March 1 are welcome
to join.
Mr. Albert Gaiser spent the
weekend in Detroit. He was sur-
prised to see that, although the
city has about as much snow as
we, only the main streets were
ploughed. Travel was a bit dif-
ficult on side streets where
sometimes only a single car
track appeared.
Sunday visitors in the village
were Mr. & Mrs. Robert Presz-
cator and family of London and
Mr. and Mrs. John Morri-sey
have returned home from an
enjoyable trip to Florida.
Mrs. Alexine Dietrich andSan-
dra O'Rourke, patients in St.
Joseph's Hospital, have both re-
turned to their homes and feel-
ing very well,
Miss Margaret Levasseur, Mr.
pat Proulx and Gary Gregory,
all of London and student teachers
from London Teachers' College
are practise teaching at Mt. Car-
mel school this week.
Rev. Father Hugh Fleming P.P.
Aylmer, visited his mother, Mrs.
Pat Fleming and Tom last Mon-
day.
Miss Irene Carey and friend,
Windsor, spent the weekend with
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Carey and
family.
