Quick action
averts blaze
What might have been a serious
fire was averted last Thursday
morning when Jim Hardy noticed
smoke in Jim Leach's workshop,
when he went down to measure
for railing. He immediately noti-
fied Mrs. Leach at the bank, who
lost no time getting home, but
owing to the smoke couldn't get
to the fire as she had no key for
the outside door.
Before the fire reels arrived,
her husband appeared and re-
moved the cause of the fire a
container holding lighted char-
coal, which he had left on his
bench.
The 100th Vestry Meeting of
Holy Trinity Anglican Church
was held in the Parish Hall last
Tuesday evening. It was most
fitting it should coincide with
Canada's Centennial Year.
The rector, the Rev. E. 0.
Lancaster presided and gave his
seventh annual report, which was
followed by Chas. Corbett's audi-
tor's report.
In honor of the occasion the
Ladies' Guild had Mrs. Ernest

Explorers seek
additional help
Last Monday everting 30 mem-
bers of the Lucan-Clandeboye
Explorers met in the UC for
their second 1967 Expedition.
They only have two counsellors
so are in dire need of even
occasional help, with such a large
group.
Judy Coughlin led in a new
game. The embroidering of wash
cloths for the overseas bale, is
their new project. Each girl was
asked to bring the price of a
cake of soap, a large needle and
embroidery floss.
Mrs. Ross McRoberts taught
a new French song and also the
song, "We All Call it Canada".
Mrs. Wm. Froats told a story.
A letter of thanks was read
from a Halifax port-worker,
thanking the group for December
gifts.
Mrs. McRoberts was incharge
of the worship service, the theme
of which was "Learning to be a
Christian". Dianne Corbett read
the Scripture. The next meeting
will be February 6.

at United Church
at the home of Mrs, Wayne Hock-
ey, where all were weighed in.
Mrs. Bond's loss was another
four pounds, making a total of
32 pounds. All had lost some.
The runner-up for the three
months was the president, Mrs.
Eldon Hopps, with a total loss of
191/2 pounds.
Following the weighing in, all
met at the hotel dining-room for
a banquet. The only two invited
guests, were Mrs. Bond's daugh-
ter, Mrs, Jack Henson and Miss
Lina Abbott,
On entering the dining-room,
Mrs. Bond was handed a large
box from Reder's Florist, Ex-
eter, a donation and best wishes
from Mr. Bond.
After the dinner Mrs. Hockey
as chairman for the evening,
welcomed all to their first Queen
crowning ceremony and pinned
a corsage on the president, fol-
lowing her pinning one on Mrs.
Bond.
And then came the big moment.
As the group has not purchased
yet an official crown to be used,
each three months, they present-
ed Mrs. Bond with a personal
tiara. In Mrs. Hopp's address
she told of the origin of TOPS
in 1948 in United States with
four members, "Today", she
said, "there are clubs all over
the world, with 600 in Canada
alone".
But the crown was not all.
Mrs. Bond received many small
gifts and many cards of con-
gratulations, for all of which
Mrs. Bond made a very suitable
reply of thanks.
As the happy evening broke
up, each member vowed she was
going to be the next queen three
months hence. Time will tell.
Storm left
snow piles
After last week's January thaw,
which left streets and sidewalks
bare, many thought "Spring was
just around the corner", but how
sadly they were mistaken.
Thursday down came the snow,
in such quantities that none of
the school buses could get through
on Friday so Biddulph and St,
Patrick's schools were closed
entirely. The Lucan PS carried
on with Lucan children and Med-
way High School with those who
were able to make it. Highway 4
was kept open so commuters to
London were able to get to work,
though some were late.
Friday afternoon, the storm
had a temporary lull, enabling
the Lions Club and Medway's
"Change About" dances to draw
each, a splendid attendance.
But it was only a lull, Sat-
urday's storm was worse than
ever, filling in the tunnels some
had dug to the street. Those who
did not have to go out Saturday
remained in the house all day
and then got up early Sunday
morning and dug themselves out
for church.
Lions visit
St. Thomas
Last Monday, 12 members of
the Lucan Lions Club accepted
an invitation to visit the St.
Thomas Lions club.
The guest speaker was a mem-
ber of OPP who spoke on acci-
dents and showed a film. This
was followed by a lively question
and answer period.
As the business meeting was
short, there was still time for
a friendly game of euchre.
