Two retiring members of Ex-
eter council — both of whom plan
to leave Exeter expre ssed
words of displeasure with the
SHDHS, board for recently ask-
ing Principal Douglas Palmer
and Vice-Principal Joseph Wood-
en if they would be willing to
resign.
The comments were made in
the discussion of re-appointing
Iry Armstrong as one of coun-
cil's representatives tothe
board.
"Are we happy with our mem-
bers?" Councillor Charles Bar-
rett questioned, adding that he
was upset over the way the board
handled themselves.
Deputy-Reeve Phil Gandon said
the board had made asses of
themselves and had "botched"
things up completely.
"We've all done a lot of think-
Fewer numbers
but not the fun
With the exception of the num-
ber of personnel, there won't
be much difference in the festivi-
ties at CFB Centralia this year.
S/L C. J. Malone, Base Com-
mander, reported that most of the
usual festivities would be held,
including the traditional N e w
Years' levee which this year has
been scheduled for January 2.
The 42 military personnel re-
maining at the base have already
held their decorating party and a
Christmas party is planned for
this week and there will be a
New Year's eve dance.
One thing missing will be the
customary Christmas dinner at
which the officers serve the oth-
er ranks. There are no facilities
remaining at the base for serv-
ing food.
S/L Malone reported that the
staff of military personnel would
be reduced to 28 in early Janu-
ary, as 14 of those there at pre-
sent have received postings.
Many of the remaining 28 will
possibly be leaving in March.
There are 39 civilians still em-
ployed at centralia.

ing, and we're not happy," Bar-
rett stated.
Reeve Derry Boyle indicated
he was quite content with re-
appointing Armstrong, stating he
was a good man who had an in-
quiring mind and wasn't afraid
to give his opinions.
Boyle suggested there were
too many members on the SHIMS
board who didn't say anything
year in and year out and said he
was pleased to note that Exeter's
representatives were not in this
category.
Boyle also explained that the
board's action had been taken at
a closed meeting so there was
no way in which council members
could know how members voted in
the situation involving Mr. Palm-
er and Mr. Wooden.
Gandon noted that It had been
indicated the decision was unani-
mous, but another council mem-
ber said he knew of two mem-
bers of the board who had not
been in favor of taking the action
undertaken by the board.
Mayor Jack Delbridge sug-
gested many people in town
were "down on the board in
general". He indicated he would
like to see Armstrong back on
the board.
Council then unanimously nam-
ed Armstrong to another term on
the board.
Councillor Joe Wooden, who
voted for the appointment, made
no comments during the debate
over the situation in which he had
been directly involved.
SEND BILL
The Exeter Public Utilities
Commission also came in for
some criticism from c ounc 11
members stemming from recent
flooding that had apparently been
created by laxness on the part
of the PUC staff.
It was reported that a couple
of drains had been cut off by
PUC workmen putting in water
mains and council members in-
dicated that a bill should be sent
to the PUC for the cost incurred
by council in having the prob-
lems solved.
Councillor Ross Taylor said
they should certainly be sent
the bill because of the "neglig-
ence",
While the decision to send the
bill was approved, Councillor
Joe Wooden noted that the PUC
was generally an efficient or-
ganization.
There was also an indication
that Works Superintendent Jim
Paisley will have plenty of prob-
lems when he arrives home from
his extended vacation in Florida.
One of the questions council
Want answered is why he agreed
to paying $150 for the rental of
shoring for the use of the firm
constructing the Marlboro St.
More winners
for draw cash
More winners have been an-
nounced in the Exeter Christmas
promotion.
One person has now won twice.
That's Mrs. William Pincombe,
RR 3 Exeter, who has won two
draws for $5 each.
Mrs. Pete Coates, Exeter, won
the most recent $25 draw and
other $5 winners were; Mrs.
Harold Thiel, Clark Fisher, Mrs.
Cornelius Faber, Marjorie
Dilkes and Miss Judy Horrell.
The final draws and the $250
jackpot will be made this week-
end.
Cars collide
at intersection
The Exeter police department
report only one accident during
the past week, that taking place
on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Involved were cars driven by
Mrs. Larry Baynham, and Den-
nis H. Hockey, both of Exeter.
They collided at the intersection
of Main and Huron Streets.
Hockey had been proceeding
east across the intersection and
the Baynham car was northbound
on Main Street.
Total damage was listed at
$175.

Sewer, and also why he ap-
parently approved an increase
in the cost per foot on the job.
Several items were laid over
until his return and it was re-
ferred to as a "growling" list.
In other business, council:
Accepted an offer from the
Bank of Montreal to buy the $13,-
100 in debentures for the Main
St. street lights.
Learned that officials working
on an election or a census are
not required to pay into the Pen-
sion plan.
Learned that the Public School
board had a surplus of $10,-
000 this year and so only$50,000
of the $60,000 originally budgeted
was paid.
Gave final reading to the new
building bylaw.
Decided that next year's road
budget will be $40,000 for con-
struction and $20,000 for maint-
enance,

"Where would we set them
off?" Mayor Delbridge asked,
"Up your chimney," Council-
lor Wooden quickly replied to
the amusement of all.
There was no decision made
in this regard. although McCau!ey
indicated the new year would be
greeted with "all the commotion
Possible".
PICK COMMITTEE
Earlier in the meeting, Coun-
cillor Mery Cudmore suggested
members should be thinking of
how much money the council
should spend on centennial ac-
tivities next year.

CAdmore said this was doubtful.
"We have more invested now
