M. C. Cameron Feeo appeared as Crown
Counsel, in connection with the County
Attorney.
The following gentlemen were called
lad sworn in as Grand Jurors :
Joseph Cook, Jas. Crawford, Joe.
Clark, Robt. Doig, T. P. Day, Wu*.
Graham, Wm. Homan, Jno. Hawkins,
Wm. Mallough Chas. Mason, Alex. Mc-
Allister, Jno. Naftel, Jno. Patterson, I'.
Robertson, Adam Reid, Jas. Scott, Walter
Treleaven, Jas. Wilkie.-Jchn Holmes,
Esq., Foreman.
In Addrea.ing the Grand Jury, His
j.ordahip expressed regret that, although
the number of prisoners to be tried was
not large, the character of the offences was
serious. He found upon the calendar one
case of murder, three of anon, and two
of forgery. The first was a capital felony,
the second was formerly capitally punish-
able, and, under some eircutnatanoe.,might
be eo still, while the third offence laid the
guilty party open to heavy punishment.
His Lordship then proceeded to lay
before the jury the principles of law gov-
erning each of these cases, illustrating
with much force and lucidity what consti-
tuted the crimes of murder, arson, and
forgery.
The civil business was then entered
upon.

EWE COUNTY rows.
313. C1RE3• W *LL_• PAINT/110S.
We oongratulate Mr Creswell- mid
the complimeut may be extended to the
whole County of Hsroo-w his remark-
able and well merited surer at our 'Prep
vincial Ilshibitiutt, held at Kiogstos
during the last week. 11e exhibited in all
eleven pictures.--arven in o., and four in
water colon. With the seven oil painting'
he carrried off six prime, one of them lav-
ing been pronounced to be the best pieture
at the Exhibition, and three others having
taken first prizes. Da water oolon Mr.
Cromwell was no ler suoneseful, each one
bearing off a prize, of which three were in
the first claw.
We had the privilege of a private in-
spection of then admirable pictures before
they'were sent down for exhibition ; in-
deed we had the gratification of watching
WWI of them in progrer, and the evidence
they presented of Mr.Crerwell's skill and
finely cultivated taste, gave us the
greatest confidence in anticipating
the result now announced by the Prise
List. ' The special correspondents of the
Lender and Glebe, and of all the Provin-
cial Press, whose opinions in Art are of
any value, vie with each other in their
cordial exprerteions of Mr. Creswell's su-
periority in .rt, and speak enthusiastically
of the admiration universally felt by the
visitors as they were attracted by the eclat
of his beautiful paintings. For ourselves
we have long regarded Mr. l'rew.well as
the best landscape painter in Canada, and
our opinion hat been amply sustained by
the results of the late Exhibition, fie there
he threw all competition completely into
the background.
Thi beat painting on the walls was, by
universal consent, Mr. Criwwell's tine
agricultural subject of " A .Funs -yard
Scene," the fioures in which was a hus-
bandman about to yoke his rues, ono of
them still recumbent, and the other in the
act of rising at the call to labor. The
subject wax happily contrived and skilful-
ly handled, and addro..sing itself directly
to the sympathies, experiemee and taste ..f
all the agricultural visitors. the natural
expression of the aniwalo. -end the faith-
fulness of the representation elicited the
wannest commendations from the great
number w.hn crowded to see the picture.
Although on this occasion Mr. Cresowell
seems even to have surpassed himself, his
treatment of animals is always exceedingly
happy. There is a carefulness and accur-
acy in his drawing, and subdued power
in the moderation yet effectiveness of his
faithful representation of animal life that
evince a perfect familiarity with their
habit.' and instincts, and enable him to
throw a fine sentiment into the picture,
without resorting to that exaggeration in
drawipg or action which characterizes
the sensational style of much of onr mod-
ern art. In the paintings exhibited Mr.
Creswell aid not neglect the County of
Huron, and on this occasion he appears to
have devoted his special attention to the
beautiful scenery of Goderich and its en-
virons. A scene on Spanish River, at
the top of Lake Huse, was much ad-
mired, and several of hit+ beet landscape
were taken directly from onr immediate
ueighborbood,aasisting in no small measure
to extend the reputation of the fine scenery
in the vicinity of Goderich. In particular
the " Harbor of Godeneb," although a
small picture, is very skilfully handled. It
ought to be purebred by the Corporation,
and treasured, if only by way of solace for
thetr for of the reality.
Mr. Creswell's gratifying soccer at the
Ezhibitioo, and the cordial approval bythe viai-
ton of the discrimination sheen by the Jedg-
- es in awarding ao maty prizes to him, may
- induce purchasers to prevent the return of
manyof these paintings to tbeCoonty; but,if not
too late, we suggest to the Mechanics' Iemi.
tote for the propriety of inviting Mr. Creswell
to exbibit them in • few days in their Hall,
which is well Sued for such a purpose, and
would afford mach rational and healthy plea-
• Isure to the inhabitant. This would be quite
within the purposes of the Institute, and be-
sides being a well mooted compliment to Mr.
Creswell, would he a source of high gratifica-

A meeting of the Bruce Provisional
Council takes place in Southampton,
in a few day., at which the
long agitated gaestion of the
County Town, it irt expected, will he
settled in favor of Walkerton. Mr. McLay
announces his intention of recording his
vote for the latter place previous to retir-
ing from public life, Mr. ',unladen will
cast his vote in the same way, and Mr.
Sinclair, Deputy Reeve of Arran, has re-
signed his sat in favor of a man who can
go the same ticket. These votes, together
with others who are now expected to go
for immediate settlement, will give Walk-
erton a large majority. When in Walker-
ton we admitted that it was not, perhaps,
the best place that could be selected for
the eount3 mat ot Bruce, but we were con-
fident that from the action of the Reeves
themselves, and the fact that it had been
proclaimed twice, there was really no other
resource. Had the Reeves taken our
advioe at the time, the buildings would
have been up ere this, and several
thousands of dollars would have been
saved to the County. It is cerlhinly
better for the ratepayers that the matter
should be settled at once, after which their
local affairs will settle down into a more
satisfactory shape. A further postpone-
ment can only lead to fresh contention and
waste of public money.
