The purpose of Safe-Driving Week, the oldest all-Canadian road safety campaign, is
not merely to reduce death and injury on the roads and streets for a single week. What is
learned and practiced during Safe-Driving Week (Dec. 1 to 7) can be put to use through
the year to save lives and prevent suffering and property loss.
The Canadian Highway Safety Council emphasizes defensive driving.
This is not done to detract from the value placed on safe vehicles and safe highways.
They have definite importance in the over-all safety scheme. However, since more than
90% of Canada's road crashes occur through human failure, we must concentrate on that
aspect.
Defensive driving is little more than common sense. Simply, it means learning how
to know potential dangerous situations, learning how to avoid them, then putting that know-
ledge to use. Since 42% of the people surveyed in connection with The Canadian Drivers
Test television program failed the test, our belief has been strengthened that few people
know where danger lurks. The driver is our principal target.
The Canadian winter, with its tumult of ice, snow and sub-zero temperatures is al-
most with us. Defensive driving becomes more important now than ever. There is no
place on our highways for the unthinking, over-agressive driver. But he will be there to
plague us, so we must avoid him. We must prevent his idiocies from killing and maiming
and destroying. This can be done through defensive driving.
We earnestly seek your assistance in bringing thorough awareness of this to every
Canadian who drives or walks. Do it during Safe-Driving week so the effect will endure
for many weeks.
