Top entries in calf competition
Although entries in the Exeter calf clubs continue to decline in favour of field crop clubs, the quality
is still at apeak. Top photo shows David Marshall, who had the top junior heifer and was judged champion
showman in the dairy class. On the right is Larry Bern, who groomed the champion senior dairy calf.

Major winners In the beef
cattle section at the fair were
Richard Doan & Son, Thorndale.
As the only exhibitor in the
Angus class they picked up 12
first place ribbons.
The main competition came
in the Hereford division, where
William O'Neil, RR 4 Denfield,
picked up eight firsts, seven sec-
onds and one third.
Whitney Coates & Son, RR 1
Centralia, had five firsts and two
seconds.
In the Shorthorn competition,
White Bros., St. Marys, were
top exhibitors with 10 firsts,
three seconds and two thirds.
Jack Coates & Son, RR I Cen-
tralia, had three firsts, five sec-
onds and two thirds, while Frank
Falconer, RR 5 Clinton, picked
up two seconds and one third.
In the baby beef class, Linda
Hem placed ,first with second
place going to Whitney Coates
& Son. Hans Bischoff was third
and Paul Passmore was fourth.
For her victory, Miss Hern
received a halter from local
harnessmaker, maurice Quance.
Ross Marshall's Holsteins top-
ped the dairy section as he walked
off with six firsts and two sec-
onds.
The only competition for the
Kirkton area breeder came from
Mrs. Tom Hern, RR 1 Woodham
who recorded a second and a
third.
Only two breeders entered the
hog competition. William Turn-
ball & Son, Brussels, recorded
16 firsts, 10 seconds and three
thirds to be top exhibitor.
Ross Cottle had two firsts,
six seconds and five thirds.
TOP SHEEP
The top sheep exhibitors were
the perennial winners, Preston
Dearing & Son, RR 1 Exeter.
Their Dorset Horn entries took
all prizes in their section and won
two of the three special events
for sheep from all sections.
Top Shropshires were shown
by Fred Gurney, Paris, who swept
the class and also won the other
special among all breeds.
There was only one breeder
entered in both the Suffolks and
Cheviots class. S. M. Blair, Bolt-
on, took the former section, while
Vance Day, Embro, swept the
Cheviot class.
Top Southdowns were shown by
Fred Lowden, Smithville,
The closest competition came
in the classes for Oxford Downs
and Leicesters. Vance Day split
honors with Donald Graham,
Parkhill, in the Leicesters, while
Fred Lowden was top point-getter
in the Oxford Downs. Don Dearing
RR 1 Exeter, was runner-up in
this class.
Cliff Pepper, Dashwood swept
the poultry class, while Mrs.
Wilfred Doupe, Exeter, took home
top honors for her bantams.

When the judges show up to
mark the entries in the annual
school showing at the Exeter
fair, they have to be prepared
to judge everything from pigeons
to pumpkins.
This year was no exception, as
the area school youngsters put

Stephen Township Deputy-
Reeve Ed Hendrick won first
place in the ensilage corn division
of the field crop competitions
sponsored by the Exeter Agri-
cultural Society.
First place in the grain corn
class went to Ted Jones, Exeter.
Entries in these two classes
were judged both at the fair and
in the field.
Placing in order behind the
Hendrick corn were: Tom Trieb-
ner, Ray Cann, Robert Down,
Donald Dearing, Gerald Dearing,
Gordon Stone, Ed. Miller, Almer
Passmore and Lorne Passmore.
