1 cup white vinegar (dilute if
desired)
1/2 cup salad oil 1:'4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tp salt
1/4 tp pepper
1 tp dried basil leaves
In large bowl combine all in-
gredients and mix well. Pack
into jar and refrigerate several
hours or overnight. Store in re-
frigerator,
On a crisp fall day the spicy
warm fragrance of freshly made
pickles is a most inviting smell.
Old-time symbols of the ac-
complished housekeeper were the
rows of homemade jams, jellies,
spiced fruits and pickles which
lined the shelves of the preserve
cupboards.
When today's homemaker re-
vives the old-time art ofpicklibg
and preserving, the scene is
different. Most of us are content
with fruit from the grocer. Vege-
tables are either picked daily
from the garden or purchased
in small quantities to make a
few jars at a time of some
favorite relishes.
Green peppers because of their
perky sweet flavor and their
bright green color are perticular
favorites for relishes. Crisp,
thick-fleshed bright green pep-
pers are the best buys. Green
and red peppers combine for
this easy no-cook relish.

PICKLED MIDGET CORN COBS
We have been asked to repeat
the recipe for pickled corn cobs
which we gave quite some time
ago in reply to a request. It was
given us by Mrs. Gordon Cud-
more from her daughter Mrs.
Kennedy in Calgary,
3 qts small corn cobs 3 to 4
inches long and no bigger than
the thumb. Husk and cover corn
with boiling water and boil 5
minutes. Place corn in jars up-
right and cover with following;
1 1;4 pints white wine vinegar
1 cup water
1 1 '4 pints white sugar
Boil syrup for a few minutes.
Pour over corn. Seal. This makes
about 5 pints. If desired add a
pinch of turmeric to vinegar
mixture-- gives corn a gold col-
or--be careful not to add too
much.

a lady who was making the hot

ago. She said there wasn't any
sugar mentioned. We are sorry
for the omission. There should
have been one and a half cups
