C.N.R. agents at Exeter, Hen-
sail, Watford and Petrolia as-
sumed a more active role on
Monday of this week, according
to an announcement by Keith
Hunt, manager of the London
area. But the C.N.R. is applying
to the Board of Transport Com-
missioners to withdraw agencies
from the following communities:
Dorchester, Thorndale, Ilderton,
Centralia, Hyde Park, Kerwood,
Mount Brydges, Newbury and
Bothwell.
All of the aforementioned
points mentioned have been under
an eight-month survey by the
C.N.R. said Mr. Hunt, in con-
nection with a direct-line ser-
vice to London offices Instead

local agent.
The agent at Exeter, Jack Mc-
Kee, has held that post for the
past four years and will con-
tinue to do so. The agent at Hen-
sail is a temporary appointment

now in for that post. Shipments
and activity at both Exeter and
Hensall are sufficiently strong
to warrant the continuing as usual
for these stations despite the
fact that application is being made
for the closing down of numerous
other stations.
In his explanation Mr. Hunt
said:
"Under the direct-line ser-
vice, calls were placed free to
our main offices at London for
rates, equipment, passenger in-
formation, reservations - or any
CN service need.
"In the nine communities from
which we are requesting with-
drawal of our agents, our experi-
ence has shown that the arrange-
ment has been effective in meet-
ing community needs and has in
many instances offered improved
service to our customers.
"The new service alters the
former need for a local office and
this contact is to he replaced by
a travelling service representa-
tive.
Accordingly, we are asking the
board of transport commission-
ers for approval of this service
arrangement."
The CN area manager said that
the communities were assessed
on a strictly individual basis and
that in trying to meet their needs,
it was decided to bring the agents
at Exeter, Hensall, Watford and
Petrolia into a more active role.
"I would like to stress that it
is inaccurate to describe these
four agencies as being reopened
or reactivated since in point of
fact they weren't closed down.
And I would like to underscore
the fact that our appraisal is
based on a strictly business-like
basis," he said.
As background, Mr. Hunt noted
that CN has been implementing
a master agency plan across the
system since 1963.

Thomas Joseph Jelfs for which
he had served several jail sent-
