J. LOADER, Manager A meeting is planned for May 19 to investigate the possibility of setting up a county library system in Huron County. Deputy reeve, J. P, Gandon told council this meeting is for information only and board members and librarians are being urged to attend. * * Councillor Ted Wright report- ed a dangerous condition in a wall of a commercial establish- ment. He indicated the wall is in danger of falling and is danger- ous to children playing in the area. Works superintendent Jam- es Paisley stated he would ap- proach the owner and have this area barricaded. * * * * The no parking sign at the corner of Wellington and Main is apparently in the wrong po- sition. Councillors have checked this and report that people ap- parently cannot see the sign. It will be moved south where driv- ers may get a better view of this. The Road committee met last week and toured Exeter Streets, deciding what work should be done and when. Councillor Taylor told council someroads will be gravel- led and the holes filled. Calcium will be applied as soon as pos- sible but it is necessary to wait until the wet period is over be- fore applying this. * * * * Huron Street East will have a sealer put over the surface to save the existing surface. Coun- cil was told there are a great number of cracks in this section and it was decided to apply the sealer and crushed rock before the road breaks up any more. The approximate cost is $'750. Council accepted the recom- mendation of the planning board that an application for the con- struction of a two unit residence on a lot on John Street be turned down because of lot area and frontage requirements. An ap- lication for a permit to construct a house on Carling Street by Robert Watcher was accepted. * * * * Council will make a prelimin- ary study as to the feasibility of installing sewers on Sanders Street East and John Street. Councillor Wooden told members there has been a definite interest shown in this. Council wishes to know how many of the residents would pre-pay their frontage be- fore installing any sewers. * * * * The Town solicitor has been requested to draft a by-law which would make it manditory for re- sidents to connect to the sanitary sewer within a specific period of time. Some towns allow one year, others two and others three years. Council will study the draft by-law before making a decision as to what period of time to use. The RAP committee will be asked to investigate a thorough- fare through the park, Wellington to Victoria which is apparently being used as a raceway. It has been suggested that a gate be erected to stop this as this is not a road. Council refused to allow a re- sident to remove top soil from the unopened section of Sanders Street East. Members indicated this would be setting a dangerous precedent as well as creating a hazard if the area filled with water in times of flood. The PUC has planted 16 trees for council this year, only half as many as in usual years. Of these, nine were maple, four Ja- panese Flowering Cherry and three Flowering Crab, The PUC absorbs the cost of labor in plant- ing these. * * * * A report that the sewer on Pryde Blvd. was backing up over the weekend turned out to be a minor problem Mr. Paisley told council. A towel was plugging a latteral. * * * * Mayor Delbridge was called on to break two tie votes Monday evening. One dealt with the in- stallation of a sewer and the other was the hiring of the new police constable. SHOP At WILSON'S JEWELLERY & GIFTS EXETER PLEASING YOU PLEASES US
