The book was prepared by Sheila Shoebottom and presented to the bride to be. Jean Prior, Cynthia, Marilyn and Mary Shoebottom helped with the gifts. PERSONALS Rev. D. M. Mr. Ross Little of Hamilton was a weekend guest with Mr. & Mrs. V. Overholt and family. Mr. & Mrs. M. Konrod of LSMFT CF Base Centralia is beginning to show signs of integration in one respect—Visiting aircraft. This past weekend a Navy Track- er paid a short visit to the Base. The Tracker aircraft is a Grumman designed, De Havilland of Canada produced carrier based anti submarine patrol aircraft. It has a wing span of '73 feet, The wings of the aircraft can be folded for carrier storage, as shown in the accompanying pic- ture. It is powered by two 9 cylinder radial engines each de- veloping 1525 BHP. When all gear and wheels are retracted it can obtain a max speed of 250 MPH, but normally patrols at 150 MPH with an endurance of 9 hours at 1500 ft. The Tracker is equipped with submarine detection equipment which includes sonobouys, radar and MAD. Sonobouys are small floatabl e radio hydrophones which are dropped by the air- craft into the water and radio back any underwater sounds. Radar, which is extended from the belly of the aircraft, pictures any surfaced object for consid- erable distance and a MAD boom which is trailed behind the air- craft when flying low over the water. MAD is similar to equip- ment used by aerial geologists when prospecting for iron ore deposits. The detection of the enemy submarine by this equipment brings the anti submarine store into play. The Trackers have a variety of stores which are used under specific conditions—the homing torpedo, depth charges and rockets. The Navy Tracker aircraft is part of Maritime Commands' ar- senal. Maritime Command, based at Halifax under the direction of R/Adm W. M. Landymore OBE, CD, is charged with the respon- sibility of maintaining the secur- ity of Canada's ocean shorelines. The Navy Tracker, for a rela- tively small aircraft, is a potent anti submarine weapon system and is one of the important links in the chain that protects Can- ada's ocean approaches. Smelt fishing is at peak As this is written, the smelt spawning run onto the beaches, is at its peak in Central Lake Erie. Smelt provide sports fish- ermen with one to two million pounds of "take home" fish an- nually within a period of about two weeks. Some fishermen complain that fishing is too good — one dip of the net gives them more than they can use. Unfortunately, some do not stop fishing, and the beaches are strewn with hundreds of fish which are a complete waste of a natural resource. This waste is a contravention of sportsmen's ethics and Section 28 of The Game and Fish Act, We would stress that the value of sports fishing is, in the main, recreational. Since smelt are easy to catch in large quantities, and there is no set limit to the number which may be taken, there is no excuse for leaving them on the beach. Ill Health? See your doctor first. Whether you live for five years or twenty-five or more, you'll get a cheque for $200 every month. Let's face it—you've put in a lot of hard work over the past forty years or so. Your retirement years are your reward. The finest way to enjoy your retirement is to have a steady, worry-free income. Thebest way to achieve this is to buy a Manufacturers Life Annuity. You hand over to Manufacturers Life the worry and risk of maintaining an income. Through the annuity arrangement your capital and the interest it earns are "scientifically" combined to give you a guaranteed income for the rest of your life. How much does an annuity cost? It depends on the income you need to carry out your dreams and plans for those years after 65. For example, the lifetime monthly income of $200 we were talking about would cost a man of 65 only $23,380. It's well worth looking into. The Man from Manufacturers has all the details. The National Safety League of Canada which, with the Cana- dian Highway Safety Council, is sponsoring the one-day drive, re- ports a clergyman as declaring, "There is no panic, no fear so great as that I see in the eyes of a parent whose child has been hurt. There is no emptiness so vast as that in the heart and soul of a parent whose child has been taken." Child Safety Day is aimed at making adults keenly aware of their responsibilities in prevent- ing child accidents as well as in training the child to make safety a lifelong habit, said the League.
