Sid Smith, of NHL fame and
Dick Shatto, retired football star
were on hand at the WinterSports
banquet at CFB Centralia last
weekend. Approx 200 sports en-
thusiasts from the local Air Base
were present for the 5 course
dinner and sports awards. Pre-
sentations were made by local
Airforce dignitaries and the two
guests of honour.
F olio wing the presentation
Dick Shatto addressed the gath-
ering and made reference to the
elusive Grey Cup. He said that
history has proved that deter-
mination and will to win has paid
off and with persistence a team
could break out and have a clear
field ahead of them.
Sid Smith, also made some
remarks about the elusiveness of
another sports trophy, the Stan-
ley Cup, which his former team,
the Toronto Maple Leafs, have
been having trouble in corralling
for the last couple of years. He
recounted several incidents in
the drive that took the Whitby
Dunlops to the Olympic Hockey
Championship, and a story about
hockey's durable star G o r die
Howe.
Playing against Howe a few
years ago, Sid found himself
trying to check Gordie along the
boards. Howe made his play any-
way by fending Sid aside with his
arm and passing the puck out to
Lindsay. Returning to the bench,
Hap Day asked Sid why he didn't
ride Howe into the boards and
stop the play. Sid's reply, "He,
(Howe), wouldn't put me down
on the ice."
The evening concluded with a
dance in the recreation centre.
