Mme, Georges p. Vanier, wife
Of the governor-general of Can-
ada, was installed as chancellor
of the Univereity of eatawaSatur-
day morning and became the
second woman university chan-
cellor in Canadats history.
Two years ago the same uni-
versity conferred on her a doc-
torate of social sciences. A tall
silver-haired figure, wearing the
robes of that office, she entered
the Church of the Sacred Heart
at the end of a long procession
of brilliantly robed chancellors,
presidents and faculty members
from across Canada. She was
presented as chancellor by the
chairman of the university's
board of governors. She removed
her black and gold academic gown
and donned the scarlet and er-
mine chancellor's robes.
At a luncheon after the cere-
mony she put aside her prepared
speech and said simply "I feel
very humble about this honor and
I want to pay tribute to my hus-
band. He is the inspirer of my
life. If I'm here today as the
new chancellor of the Univer-
sity of Ottawa, I owe it to a
man called Vanier."
Her official duty after her in-
stallation was to confer an hon-
orary' doctorate on Dr. Wilder
G. Penfield of Montreal, the dis-
tinguished Canadian neurologist.
Kathy Wiffen, 17, of RR 6
Woodstock, was declared t o p
Canadian cherry pie maker at a
Vineland contest last Tuesday in
which about 1,700 competed,
The Canadian pie-making com-
petition is sponsored by the Red
Cherry Institute, an organization
of cherry growers. Kathy won
$500 in scholarships which she
will use to help her through
Teachers' College, Stratford, and
$100 in cash.
Kathy's two brothers were the
samplers of the 50 pies she
baked before the competition
"and they ate most of them"
she said.
Is anyone interested in the
recipe she used? If so, we will
give it in this column.

ner, Zurich, in a ceremony per-
formed by Rev. A, C. Blackwell
in St. Peter's Lutheran Church,
Zurich, Saturday, February 19

labra formed the setting in the

Stad e, Zurich who sang The
Lord's Prayer and Be Thou With
Them.
Given in marriage by her father
the bride wore a floor-length
white French peau de soie gown.
The bodice was highlighted by a
shallow, scoop neckline, elbow-
length sleeves and an empire
insert touched with delicate Gui-
pure lace. A gently controlled
semi-sheath A-line skirt had
extra fullness in the back cas-
cading to a chapel train from a
tailored bow. A white smocked
pillbox held her cape-length pure
silk veil and she carried white
hybrid orchids and miniature
carnations.
Miss Carol Johnston was maid
of honor for her sister and wore
a floor-length gown of mint green
peau de sole with A line skirt.
The empire waistline with an
emerald green satin bow held
a watteau train. She wore match-
ing mint and emerald green head-
piece and carried a cascade of
white Fuji mums. Bridesmaids
were Mrs. Hubert Schilbe, Zur-
ich, and Ann Denomme, London.
They were gowned similarly to
the maid of honor.

cently visited her daughter in
California, brought home a fruit

tasty and so simple that "I won-
