ROBERT GEORGE MERNER Diocesan president is speaker at Centralia April 25, 1965, the Catholic Women's League of Canada or- ganized a new diocesan council to be known as The Military Vic- ariate Council. Mrs. J. R. Mc- Crossin of RCAF Station St. Hu- bert, Quebec, was elected pre- sident, The RCAF Station Centralia council was pleased to have Mrs. McCrossin as guest speaker at the February meeting. Miss Cath- erine Teal of London, national CWL president accompanied Mrs. McCrossin and introduced McGillivray WI hear teacher her to the members. In her address Mrs. McCrossin explained the advantages of a council to present the views and needs of its members who are frequently transferred from pro- vince to province as well as over- seas. The role of the Military Council in relation to its civilian counterpart was discussed, Members were urged to sup- port the CWL project for the cen- tennial year, namely the Vanier Institute of the Family. Plans are underway to hold a convention of the Military Councils in Montreal next year. The guests were thanked by Mrs. Gilberta Haight, president and an informal coffee hour fol- lowed. The third meeting of Kirkton No. 1 was held Wednesday, Feb. 16 at '7:30 at Mrs. Earl Watson's. Eleven members answered the roll call which was "The acces- sories I plan to make". The name decided on for Kirk- ton No, 1 is "Happy Hatters", Mrs. Watson showed how to make a tie-dye scarf. Notes were given on scarves and care for scarves. Vanier, wife Of the governor-general of Can- ada, was installed as chancellor of the Univereity of eatawaSatur- day morning and became the second woman university chan- cellor in Canadats history. Two years ago the same uni- versity conferred on her a doc- torate of social sciences. A tall silver-haired figure, wearing the robes of that office, she entered the Church of the Sacred Heart at the end of a long procession of brilliantly robed chancellors, presidents and faculty members from across Canada. She was presented as chancellor by the chairman of the university's board of governors. She removed her black and gold academic gown and donned the scarlet and er- mine chancellor's robes. At a luncheon after the cere- mony she put aside her prepared speech and said simply "I feel very humble about this honor and I want to pay tribute to my hus- band. He is the inspirer of my life. If I'm here today as the new chancellor of the Univer- sity of Ottawa, I owe it to a man called Vanier." Her official duty after her in- stallation was to confer an hon- orary' doctorate on Dr. Wilder G. Penfield of Montreal, the dis- tinguished Canadian neurologist. Kathy Wiffen, 17, of RR 6 Woodstock, was declared t o p Canadian cherry pie maker at a Vineland contest last Tuesday in which about 1,700 competed, The Canadian pie-making com- petition is sponsored by the Red Cherry Institute, an organization of cherry growers. Kathy won $500 in scholarships which she will use to help her through Teachers' College, Stratford, and $100 in cash. Kathy's two brothers were the samplers of the 50 pies she baked before the competition "and they ate most of them" she said. Is anyone interested in the recipe she used? Bridge results Winners at the Exeter Bridge Club Thursday evening were Miss Lois Herrington; R, I. McDowell and George Tucker. Miss Elizabeth Ann Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Johnston, Zurich, became the bride of Robert George Merner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Mer- ner, Zurich, in a ceremony per- formed by Rev. A, C. Blackwell in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Zurich, Saturday, February 19 at 3:30 pm. Baskets of white mums with green bows matching the atten- dants' dresses, ferns and cande- labra formed the setting in the church and Ronald Klopp played the wedding music and aceom- panted the soloist Miss Cheryl Stad e, Zurich who sang The Lord's Prayer and Be Thou With Them. Given in marriage by her father the bride wore a floor-length white French peau de soie gown. The bodice was highlighted by a shallow, scoop neckline, elbow- length sleeves and an empire insert touched with delicate Gui- pure lace. A gently controlled semi-sheath A-line skirt had extra fullness in the back cas- cading to a chapel train from a tailored bow. A white smocked pillbox held her cape-length pure silk veil and she carried white hybrid orchids and miniature carnations. Miss Carol Johnston was maid of honor for her sister and wore a floor-length gown of mint green peau de sole with A line skirt. The empire waistline with an emerald green satin bow held a watteau train. She wore match- ing mint and emerald green head- piece and carried a cascade of white Fuji mums. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Hubert Schilbe, Zur- ich, and Ann Denomme, London. They were gowned similarly to the maid of honor. Arthur Miller, Zurich, was best man and Bob Johnston and Larry Merner ushered. Mrs. Fraser Dixon presided for the meeting. It was decided to sponsor a child through the Canada Save the Children fund.
