The chances of the Exeter
Hawks finishing third in the
Shamrock Junior D League this
season were dimmed Tuesday
night when the locals were de-
feated by the sixth place Point
Edward Redmen 8-6 in Exeter.
The Hawks who trail third place
Strathroy by one point must now
defeat Point Edward in Point Ed-
ward tonight (Thursday) in order
to finish third.
Bob Livermore and Fred Lamb
scored goals within seven min-
utes of the first period but the
visitors came back to tie the
score. The locals then scored
two more goals with Bill Chip-
chase and Livermore blinking
the red light but the Redmen
again tied the score as netenind-
er Rick Stade had a little trouble
getting into the groove,
The two clubs traded second
period goals as. John Cooper
put the Hawks into a temporary
5-4 lead only to have Point Ed-
ward's Bill Chivers knot the
score again.
The visitors struck for two
on a long drive from the left
point and Livermore added his
second goal V the night as the
locals held on to a 6-5. lead at
the end of the middle stanza.

Morrissey ended the scoring with
goals at 9;55 and 19;50. Mor-

the visitors had removed him in
a vain attempt to get back into the
game.
The Hawks picked up seven of
the 15 penalties that were handed
out during the cleanly played fast
tilt with defenseman Bill Bourne
serving four minors.

a 7-5 lead before Fred Lamb
converted a passout from Den-
nis Morrissey to cut the deficit
to one goal. The locals began to
press after Lamb's goal but it
was Point Edward who scored
to go two goals up when Gary
Clarke picked up an errant Hawk
clearing pass and walked in un-
molested.
In the dying minutes coach
Earl Wagner removed Stade for
an extra attacker but the locals
were unable to salvage the tie.
Only ten penalties were called
in the loosely played tiltwithfive
minor infractions going to each
club.
The Hawks split two Shamrock
tilts last week losing '7,4 in
Strathroy on Thursday and then
taking an 8-5 decision over Bel-
mont on home ice on Friday
night, Their '7-4 loss to Strath-
roy was an important contest but
the locals were unable to defeat
the fast skating southern crew
who have beaten the Hawks twice
this season.
A total of 210 fans were on
hand In the Exeter rink on Fri-
day to see the locals defeat Bel-
mont 8-5 for their first win of
the season over the second place
Hatters. Chunky Bob Livermore
paced the local club with three
goals against the Hatters who
had previously defeated the
Hawks by scores of 6-5, 3-2
and 4-3,
Ron Broderick's goal at 2;54
of the first frame put the Hawks
in front and Livermore's marker
at 6;41 gave them a 2-0 lead
before the visitors came up with
four straight goals to take a 4-2
bulge at the end of the first
period. The Hatters were as-

penalties that were meted out in
the initial frame but still man-
aged to outscore the locals.

their lead to one goal with five
minutes remaining in the first

Hawks into a 2-2 tie with a goal
at 3;10 of the second frame but
that was as close as the locals
came as Strathroy scored three
unanswered markers before the
period ended to take a 5-2 bulge.
Each club scored twice in the
final period with Fred Lamb
and Larry Willert tallying for
Exeter.

The Exeter Junior Hawks wind up their regu-
lar Shamrock Junior D schedule this week with two
postponed games with Point Edward and the local
club should start their first round of playoffs next
week against either Port Huron Beefeaters or the
Belmont Hatters. At this writing coach Earl Wagner
and his Hawks are one point out of third place with
two games remaining while the third place Strathroy
Rockets have completed their schedule. If the locals
come up with a win in one of the Point Edward tus-
sles they will take over third place and face the
league leading Port Huron club in the first round of
playoffs. If, however, the Hawks fail to defeat the
Redmen they will finish fourth and face Belmont.
Both Belmont and Port Huron should provide
the Hawks with a lot of competition as the locals
have been able to manage only two wins in eight
meetings with these clubs. Last year's league cham-
pions will have to make an all out effort to repeat
as the best club in the circuit.
After the Shamrock League playoffs the
Hawks will play off with Belmont, Mount Brydges
and Strathroy for the right to continue on in OHA
Junior D competition.
Although they have yet to complete their reg-
ular schedule the three Exeter minor teams are cur-
rently in the midst of a round-robin playoff series
with Stoneybrook and Strathroy for the right to rep-
resent the Shamrock grouping in Ontario Minor play.
The local pee wees and midgets have come up
with wins in the playoff series but the Legion Ban-
teams are still looking for their first victory. The
Exeter Midgets have recorded wins over Stoneybrook
and Strathroy while the pee woes defeated Strathroy
after losing their first game to Stoneybrook and are
still very much in the fight.
After the round-robin playoff the teams will
split into divisions to play for their loop titles.
The Exeter Squirts will start their OMHA
playoffs next week when they square off with Stoney-
brook.
ICE FISHING
One of the favourite winter pastimes in this
area is ice fishing and several local groups have
made the trip up to Lake Simcoe to try their luck
in the last few weeks. For the most part conditions
have been good at Lake Simcoe with the ice running
about 12 inches thick and if the present weather
conditions continue the next few weeks should be
very productive for local ice fishermen.
One of the most successful groups to make
the journey was Gar Johnston and Eric Ostland of
Exeter and Al Hildebrand of Seaforth who landed
nine• lake trout up in the Huntsville district last week-
end. The local group was fishing in about 100 feet
of water with Ostland coming up with a 10-pounder
for the biggest of the day.
Bob Fletcher, Woody Davidson, Reg Stagg and
Don Mousseau were one of the first groups to make
the journey but they failed to land any fish and will
be going up again later on. Last Sunday Bill Belling,
Har Holtzman, Reg Stagg and Bert Ostland landed a
dozen whitefish while Bill Snell, George Eisenschink
and Bill Kell also had some success on Lake Simcoe.

from Exeter and Dashwood made the trip to Detroit
for the Red Wing-Montreal contest last Sunday. Ex-
cept for the score the game was one of the best of
the season . . . Jerry Finnen 302, Bob Pooley 317,
Jack Fuller 320, Bob Moore 325 and Marty McIntyre

Club's production "Holiday on Ice" is expected to be
the best ever with skaters from the area displaying
their training . . . The already undermanned Exeter
Hawks' defense corps suffered another blow on Fri-
day night when stalwart Larry Willert banged his
knee on the goal post. Willert, who will likely not
see any action until next week, joins Craig Davidson
and forward Bob Moir on the sidelines leaving only
Bill Bourne the only healthy rearguard . . . Don't

Wednesday night win was the
second straight in their round-

In other Wednesday games the
local pee wees evened their
round-robin record at 1-1 with a
6-4 win while the Legion Bantams
dropped a close 4-3 decision and
are still looking for their first
win in the series.
The local midgets who seem
to excel when they have to come
from behind overcame a 2-0 def-

third game of the night,
John Loader scored his first
goal of the game late in the first

Bill Taylor, Loader and Pete

the victory.
Exeter goalie Glenn Stire al-
lowed Strathroy two well earned
markers in the first frame but
then settled down to play a very
steady game the rest of the way.
A five goal outburst in the
third period carried the Exeter
Pee Wees to a 6-4 win over the
visitors in the first game of the
night as the locals brought their
round-robin record to 1-1.
The two clubs played to a. 1-1
tie in the first period and Strath-
roy held a 2-1 advantage at the
end of the second before the
locals turned on the pressure.
Steve Riddell scored Exeter's
first goal with Brad Klumpp pick -
ing up an assist on the play.
Larry Davies led the third pe-
riod uprising with a pair of mar-
kers with Rick Perry, Russ Har-
rington and Pete Glover adding
single goals.
The Exeter club picked up
seven of the ten penalties that
were handed out in the rugged
contest.
