The Exeter Junior Hawks split
two games last week defeating
Delhi 9-4 in Exeter last Friday
and losing 4-3 in Belmont on
Saturday but dropped into fourth
place in the Shamrock League as
Strathroy came up with a pair of
victories to move ahead of the
locals, The Hawks now have a
13-'7 won lost record with two
games left in the schedule. At
present the locals are one point
behind Strathroy but could pull

for the fast moving third period.
Belmont went ahead early in
the final frame when Bill Rich-
ardson scored at 3:11 to make the
score 3-2 but Ron Broderick
again tied the game at 13;50
before Dave Schuyler scored the
eventual winning goal at 17:26.
Exeter coach Earl Wagner re-
moved goalie Rick Stade in the
last minutes of the game and
although the Hawks kept the puck
in the Belmont end they were
unable to come up with the equal-
izer.
Exeter picked up nine of the
15 penalties that were handed
out in the well played tilt.

"Holiday on Ice" is the theme of this year's
carnival that will be staged by the Exeter Figure
Skating Club at the Exeter Arena on February 26
and this year's production promises to be one of the
biggest ever. This year the club's membership has
increased to over 90 skaters ranging in age from
four to 17 and all skaters have been working hard
in the last few weeks in order to put on a good show
for the capacity audience that is expected.
The carnival will get underway at eight o'clock
and will feature production numbers as well as guest
and individual performances by local talent. Guest
skaters at this year's carnival will include Marilyn,
Betty and Vicki Hannigan of Essex and Paul Jignac
of Windsor 1,vho won the Western Ontario Novice
Men's competition last month. The Hannigan sisters
are the daughters of Ted Hannigan who is a former
resident of Exeter.
Mrs, Faye MacDonald of Brussels, who has in-
structed the Exeter skaters for the past three years,
is again in charge of the various numbers. Sheila
Willert, Kathy Holtzman, Linda Lowery, Christine
Price, Yvonne Romaniuk and Brenda Brintnell will
be same of the local youngsters who will be doing
solo numbers.
Minor hockey action
Minor Hockey Day in Exeter Saturday was a complete success with over 300 on hand to watch the action.
There were thrills as well as spills as recorded here as the teams played fast clean hockey,(T-A photo)
300 fans watch fast,
clean play by minors
ahead of the Rockets if they
come up with a win in Strathroy
tonight (Thursday).
Strathroy has only one game
remaining in their schedule but
if they defeat the Hawks on Thurs-
day night the locals who will play
Belmont on Friday night will be
forced to play the two postponed
games against Point Edward in
order to determine their correct
position in the standings.
Playoffs for the Shamrock Lea-
gue championship will consist of
two out of three games series
between the first and third and
second and fourth place clubs.
After the Shamrock playoffs
the Hawks will move out into
OHA Junior D playdowns and will
probably come up against the
strong Belmont Hatters who have
beaten the locals three times this
season by one goal margins. In
the first meeting between the two
clubs Belmont scored a 6-5 over-
time win in Exeter and then two
weeks later they followed with
a 3-2 win in Belmont over the
locals.
In Belmont last Saturday night
the Hatters scored twice in the
final period to defeat the Hawks
4-3 in another close contest be-
tween the two clubs.
Speedy John Willsie opened
the scoring in the first period
at 5:50 to put Belmont into a
1-0 lead but Bob Livermore of
the Hawks tied the score less
than five minutes later and the
first frame ended in a 1-1 tie.

TAKE FOURTH IN ROW
OVER DELHI
Last Friday In Exeter the
Hawks came up with five big
goals in the third period to defeat
Delhi 9-4. It was the Hawks
fourth win over the Delhi club
whom they have outscored 29-14.
The locals started out slowly
as they held a 2-1 lead at the end
of the first and a 4-3 bulge at the
end of the second but their third
period splurge carried them to
their 13th win of the year.
Fred Lamb, Bill Chipchase and
Bob Livermore paced the Exeter
attack with two goals each while
Scott Burton, Larry Willert and
Bill Bourne picked up single
goals.
Exeter will play in Strathroy
Thursday night and then play
their final regularly scheduled
game against Belmont here Fri-
day night.
Although the Walkerton Mid-
gets failed to attend last Satur-
days Minor Hockey Night the
night was a huge success with
over 300 people sitting in on
three well played hockey games.
In the first game of the evening
the local squirts recorded a 5-3
win over Lucan while the Exeter
Pee Wees defeated St. Marys 3-1
in the second action packed en-
counter. The Legion Bantams
dropped a 3-1 decision to a strong
St. Marys crew while the Exeter
Midgets who are undefeated, so
far this season inShamrock Lea-
gue play, whipped the Bank Boys
of the Rec League by a 9-5
LOCAL BOWLING TEAMS IN TOP SPOTS
With only six weeks remaining in their regu-
lar schedules it appears that Exeter teams will again
be walking off with bowling league championships
in both the Ladies' and Men's Intertown Leagues
this season. After last week's action the Itchy Six are
leading the men's league by 21 points while one of
the two Exeter ladies' teams hold a 23 point lead
over the other local team which is in second place.
Goderich is currently in third place in the
ladies' league five points behind the Exeter Pepsis
while last place Seaforth has a total of 20 points.
In the individual category Betty Datars of the
Pepsis holds the league high average with 200 while
Audrey Zachar of the league leaders holds the high
single of 300.
The race for second place in the Men's Inter-
town Bowling League is fairly close but Exeter's
Itchy Six with 162 hold a commanding lead over
second place Goderich who have 141. Clinton Cloud
9 is currently In third place in the men's competi-
tion with 137 points with RCAF Clinton holding
down fourth spot four points behind the Cloud 9
squad.
Jack Fuller's 403 masterpiece is still the high
single in the men's league while Don Couture has
the highest five-game total pinfall of 1452. Don Bea-
yerstock of the Itchy Six is the current holder of the
high average with 228.

rington, John Krampp and Steve
Riddell carried the local pee wees
to a 3-1 win over St. Marys in
the second game of the evening.
The robust defensive work of
Dale "Pickles" Parkin also play-
ed a big part in the Exeter win
as they build up a 3-0 lead with
one goal in the first and two in
the second frame. The visitors
scored their only goal with less
than four minutes remaining in
the tilt.
The locals picked up six pen-
alties to none for St. Marys with
Parkin sitting out two minors.
The St. Marys Bantams scored
a goal in each period to defeat
Exeter by a 3-1 score in the
third game of the night. The
visitors gave Mike McLaughlin
in the Exeter net a lot of work
throughout the game but the
youngster came up with several
fine saves or the score might
have been much higher.
Larry Haugh scored Exeter's
lone goal in the second frame
with Steve Murley drawing an
assist on the play. Haugh's mark-
er cut the St. Marys lead to one
goal but the visitors were able
to hold on until the end of the
period.
Only three penalties were call-
ed in the cleanly played contest
with the homesters picking up
two minor penalties.
The Old Timers turned into
the spoilers of the Exeter Rec
Hockey loop last week as they
recorded wins over second place
Crediton on Sunday and over the
first place Bankers last Thurs-
day night. As a result of their
pair of wins the third place
oldsters now have nine points,
two more than fourth place Gra-
ham and Graham. The league
leading Bankers have 15 points
while Crediton is next with 13.
Red Loader and Terry Bourne
paced the Old Timers with two
goals apiece in the penalty filled
Crediton encounter with defense-
man Dick Bennett and Bill Shad-
dick picking up single tallies.
Crediton goals were scored
by Doug Galloway and Allan
Rundle in the 6-2 Old Timer
victory.
In last Thursday's games the
Old Timers came from behind
to edge the Bank Boys 8-7 on
Terry Bourne's late tally while
Crediton moved two points closer
to first place with a 9-6 rout of
Graham and Graham.
Bill Heywood with three goals
led the Bankers who held 3-0
and 6-3 leads but Derry Boyle's
Old Timer squad outlasted the
undermanned Bankers to record
an 8-7 win. Other Banker goals
came off the sticks of Dale Tur-
vey, Frank Boyle, Pete McFalls
and Larry Stire.
The line of Red Loader, Mur-
ray Brintnell and Terry Bourne
was the most dangerous for the
oldsters with Bourne scoring
three goals and Loader and Brint-
nell tallying once each. Ron Horn
with two goals and Gar Johnston
with one rounded out the other
Old Timer markers.
The powerful Crediton club
got a four goal performance from
Dick Colter which allowed them
to register a 9-6 win over Gra-
ham and Graham to put the Lon-
don squad back into the league
basement. BobGalloway, Pat Mc-
Keeve r, Jim Finkbeiner, Joe
Regier and Jim Pfaff looked after
the other Crediton goals.
HOCKEY TOURNAMENT AT CENTRALIA

be staging their third annual International Tourna-
ment at the Randall Arena next Saturday and Sun-
day with teams from Mt. Carmel and Detroit taking
part in the tourney. The two-day competition will
feature two-game series between the Centralia
Squirts, Pee Wees and Bantams and their Detroit
counterparts with the Mt. Carmel and Centralia Mites
playing a single game on Saturday afternoon.
Group Captain Ockenden will officially wel-
come the. American visitors on Saturday morning
and the players will be distributed to various homes
before the actual play begins with the pee wee game
getting underway at 1:15.
The Centralia group will also present a Skat-
ing Carnival on Saturday night with drum Majorettes
performing at different times during the weekend.
Goderich rink wins
5th Kinsmen bonspiel
In the Lake Huron Zone House-
league tournament held at St.
Marys last Saturday, the Exeter
bantams came out with t w o
straight wins and now advance to
the finals which will be played in
Listowel next Saturday. The first
game of the morning at 8 am
pitted Exeter against the St.
Marys bantams. At the end of the
second period St. Marys was
leading 2-1 on goals by Somers
and Shain with Bob Rowe netting
the only goal for Exeter. After
a five minute rest Exeter came
back strong to score three quick
goals two by Don Schenk and one
by Murray Hodge to win the game.
In the Pee Wee game that fol-
lowed St. Marys defeated Exeter
3-2. St. Marys took a quick lead
in this game with goals by For-
rester and Macintosh and at the
end of the second period were
leading 2-0, Exeter came out
strong in the third period and
tied the score on goals by Allen
Parsons and Randy Gilfillan.
Teahen scored St. Marys' third
goal and the eventual winner near
the end of the third period.
The squirts met Listowel in
their first game and were beaten
2-0. The squirts coached by Mal-
colm Hiltz played well but were
unfortunate in not being able to
put the puck in the net when they
had the chance. Both goals for
Listowel were scored by Mc-
Millan.
In the second game for the
Exeter bantams and this one at
11 am the opposition was the Lis-
towel bantams. The Exeter boys
had very little trouble in this
game as they outscored Listowel
9-3. Bob Rowe had the hat trick,
Don Schenk 2, Jack Darling 2
(they didn't pull their goaltender
either). Ron Grasdhal and Murray
Hodge 1 goal each. Woods was
the big gun for Listowel as he
scored all three goals.
The second game for the pee
wees was against Listowel and
Exeter completely dominated
play throughout as Listowel only
had about three shots on the
Exeter goaltender Bill Inch. Den-
nis Ferguson was top goal scorer
for Exeter with two goals followed
by Allen Parsons, Philip Moore
and Pete Mason with one goal
each.
In the second game for the
squirts, St. Marys was the op-
position. Although goaltender
Danny Brintnell played an out-
standing game in goal St. Marys
won the game 2-1. The lone goal
scorer for Exeter was Jim Wild-
fong.

Bernice Cann and her unde-
feated foursome seem to have
things all wrapped up in the Tues-
day competition of the second
draw of the Exeter Ladies' Curl-

shaping up for the top rung in
both the Wednesday and Thurs-

Cann edged Thora Payne 9-8

of the other Tuesday curlers.
Helen Frayne whipped Ellen
Knight 9-4 in another Tuesday

The Stoneybrook Bantams
came up with a goal with less
than five minutes left in the
third period to break a 3-3 dead-
lock and give them a 4-3 win
over the locals. Steve Murley's
first period tally and Ron Lin-
denfield's goal in the second
frame gave the Legion Bantams
a 2-0 lead but the visitors tied
the score late in the second
period.
Barry Baynham's hard slap-
shot from the blueline gave the
locals a 3-2 lead in the third
frame but they were unable to
hold on as Stoneybrook came
roaring back with two unanswered
tallies.
Coach Lorne Haugh removed
goalie Mike McLaughlin in the
dying moments of the game but
the Exeter squad was unable to
come up with the equalizer.

close 4-3 decision.
Stoneybrook gave the midget
club a bit of a scare as they
took a 2-0 first period lead but
the locals went to work in the
