Two Centralia rinks battled it out to the wire in the day long competition with the Helen Bur- ton foursome posting three wins with a plus of 34 to edge out Lil Hinson. Mrs, Hinson who was the first draw winner recorded three wins and a plus of 33 to finish close behind Burton. In the individual competition Keith Brintnell of the Blue Birds has taken the lead for games won for the season with 24 while Marl Edwards of the Itchy Four holds the ladies teed with12 games won, By virtue of their 4-1 win over the Champs, the Plumbers now hold a four point lead over the second place Sharpshooters. The Plumbers have 49 points while the Sharpshooters are six points in front of the Blue Birds who are in third place with 39 points. The Cleaners are currently in fourth place with 38 points while the Itchy Four and Featheritights are in a fifth place tie with 37. The Legionnaires with 33 points and the Champs with 22 round out the eight team loop. The local Legion is planning an Open Mixed Dart Tournament on March 12. LEGION STILL SECOND The Exeter Legion Dart team that competes in the RCAF cen- tralia Inter-Mess Dart League fell eight points behind the lea- gue leading Corporal A squad when the leaders whipped the Legion 6-4 last Wednesday night. The Corporal A club now has 95 points and the Legion 87 while the third place Corporal B who were downed 6-4 by the Airmen B have a total of 71. Tom Collings' second goal of. the night with less than five minutes remaining in the third period enabled the Lucan-Ilder- ton Combines to eke out a 6-5 victory over the improving Pet- rolia Raiders in Lucan last Fri- day night. The fast moving con- test was cleanly played with only 14 penalties being handed out. The Combines had to come from behind for the win as the visitors at one time held a 1-0 lead on Claude Cormier's first period marker butJacques Coes- ineau came back to knot the count five minutes later with Vic Noble Nueseemmswomomma and Larry Hossack helping out on the score. Each club scored once in the final 20 minutes but the winners struck for four in the second frame to hold a 5-4 lead at that point. Don Urbshott's goal at the 5:10 mark of the second frame gave the Combines a 2-1 lead and goals by Collings and two by Barry Hearn brought the Lucan margin to 5-1 but the Raiders came roaring back to score three times before the end of the period. The three Petrolia tallies came within four minutes of the middle stanza with Cormier picking up Support Minor Hockey Week his second of the night and Daw- son Schroeder scoring twice . Cormier's goal was scored at the 15:48 mark while Schroeder scored his two goals in a space of 10 seconds at 19:22 and 19:32. The shorthanded Raiders who had only nine players dressed for the OHA Intermediate B tilt opened the scoring in the third period with Reg Mulholland tying the score at five all. The Com- bines began to applythe pressure after Mulholland's goal at 4:20 but the Raiders withstood the at- tack until late in the period when Jack Campbell and Barry Hearn combined to set up Collings for the winning marker. Both goaltenc:ers Keith Scar- borough of the Combines and the Raiders' Ron urry came up with several big saves during the contest that was played before a sparse crowd. Hockey Night in Exeter with four hockey games being staged at the local rink as part of Canada's Minor Hockey Week. Exeter's Minor Hockey Week program was to have taken place last Saturday but the three St. Clair Shores teams that were supposed to supply the op- position for the locals were unable to make the trip because of a previous commitment and the card had to be rescheduled for this weekend. The three Michigan clubs who played here last year as part of the Minor Hockey Week celebration are unable to make it this week but Exeter officials are contacting 'teams such as St. Marys and Gode- rich and the four games will likely go on as sched- uled, This year's program will get underway at 6:30 with a novice game between Exeter and Lucan. After the novice game, which will feature young players ten years old and younger, the Exeter Pee Wees will play a team from St. Marys at 7:30 with bantam and midget games to follow. Each of the four games will last one hour with the Exeter Minor Hockey Asso. cation supplying free hot dogs and pop for the play- ers and coaches after each contest. GOOD WEATHER FOR SKIERS A few years ago there were only a handful of skiers in the area as the facilities were few and far between but with the advent of the Pinery Provin- cial Park and Walker Woods which are located south of Grand Bend, skiing and tobogganing have become much more popular in the area during the winter months. For the past two weeks the two areas have been doing a big business with winter sports en- thusiasts coming from far and wide to take advan- tage of the top rated facilities and with last week- end's heavy snowfall the crowds should continue to fill the slopes. The Ontario Safety League issued some worth- while safety tips for skiers and snowmobile drivers last week that every skier should know. Following are five important common sense rules of behaviour that should become a habit with good skiers. (1) Ski under control at all times. If you are constantly passing others and still skiing under con- trol, you should find a better hill. If others are often passing you, find an easier hill. (2) The down-hill skier has the right of way. If you are going to pass indicate on which side. (3) A standing skier has no right of way and should never take off into the path of an oncoming skier. (4) Avoid walking on hills and trails without skis where deep holes will result which could cause accidents. (5) Fill in and tramp down any holes you make when falling. SNOWMOBILERS SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS Those scenes familiar to TV viewers of snow- mobiles flying through the air with the greatest of ease are all well and good for the expert, profession- al drivers. But the Ontario Safety League warns the novice snowmobiler to acquire a thorough know- ledge of the operation of his machine before attempt- ing any stunt driving or even trail riding through rugged bush country. A number of serious injuries have been reported because of such actions. Because of the recent large snowfall there will be a lot of snowmobiles in the area and all operators are asked to use caution. RUSTLINGS — Gerry Webb of the A &H Spe- cials led all bowlers last week with a high game of 318 in the men's Monday night A league while other bowlers who broke into the 300 circle last week in- cluded Verla Smith of the IGA Darlings with 311, Jack Coughlin of the Shaboorns 315 and Bob Moore and Dan Traquair of the Crystal Loggers with 315 and 314 respectively . . The Exeter Hawks had two games with the Point Edward Redmen stormed out last week. The third place Hawks, who had their Thursday and Friday night games postponed, will get back into the pennant fight when they meet Delhi here Friday night and travel to Belmont on Satur- day night . Bad driving conditions forced the postponement of the Crediton - Old Timers' Rec League game last Thursday. The game between the second and fourth place clubs will be played at a later date . . This year's NHL race is shaping up to be one of the closest in recent years with three teams fighting for the top rung. At the moment the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks are tied for first place with the hustling Montreal Canadiens one point back in second place and it looks like these three clubs will be battling right down to the wire. Bobby Hull of the Black. Hawks scored twice last week bringing his goal total to 42 and would seem to be a sure bet to establish a new scoring mark this season. Most hockey followers would like to see Hull score 50 goals in or before his 50th game. Chances reduced Leftwinger Bob Moir is ex- pected to be out for the season with his broken limb and de- fensive stalwart Larry Willert is still nursing a broken toe but will be in the lineup when the Hawks meet Delhi here on Friday night. With only four games left in their regular Shamrock League sehedule the chances of the Ex- eter Junior Hawks repeating as league champions are greatly reduced. The locals who split two games with Port Huron in their last two games now trail the leading Beefeaters by seven points while the second place Belmont Hatters hold a five point margin over the Hawks. The locals and Belmont each have four games left including two games against each other and as the Hawks have a chance of catching the Hatters it is doubtful whether they will chal- lenge the Beefeaters who have two games remaining for the lead. Besides the Hawks' two games with Belmont they have to play third place Strathroy and last place Delhi. Coach Earl Wagner and his charges will want to be up for both Belmont games as the Hat- ters are expected to be the Hawks biggest opposition for the Junior D honours. Strathroy who could turn out to be spoilers and Mount Brydges are the other D clubs in the loop. Valentine's Day February 14 Russ Harrington fired a three goal hat trick to pace the Exeter squad to their win over Mitchell. The home team took an early 1-0 lead in the first period but Rick Perry scored ten minutes later to tie the score and then Harrington took over. Harrington scored before the end of the first frame and then added two more in the second before John Krampp and Randy Preszcator tallied to end the scoring in the rout. The Exeter victory was a good team effort with all members turning in a fine performance in the rugged tilt that was played as part of Minor Hockey Week. Last Wednesday night the lo- cals outlasted a well coached Goderich club to post a 6-5 exhibition victory. Exeter held a 2-1 lead at the end of the well played first period but the vis- itors outscored the Exeter club 3-2 in the second frame to take a 4-3 margin. Russ Harrington and Peter Glover paced the winners with two goals apiece while Larry Bourne and Robbie Lindemield added single tallies. Jim Brown played a steady game in the Exeter net through- out the game and was particular- ly tough in the third period when the visitors were pressing for the tying goal. The Perfect Gift (No Calories) The Exeter Legion Bantams lost a tough 2-1 decision to St. Marys in Lucan last Saturday and were eliminated from the annual Lucan Bantam Tournament after they had posted a 3-1 over Byron Optimists in the first game of the tourney. Although the locals failed to win the B division of the compe- tition they gained revenge over the Byron club that had defeated the Legion club at the London Ice Bowl Tournament that was held in the Gardens on December 26. Ron Lindenfield and Chris Rid- dell gave the locals a quick 2-0 lead in the Byron game that was played Saturday afternoon. The two Exeter goals were scored within the first five minutes of the initial frame and were all that goalie Mike McLaughlin needed as he thwarted every Byron scoring opportunity until the 18:30 mark of the final period. Larry Haugh's second period marker gave the Exeter club a 3-0 bulge before the losers late tally. Although they weren't outplay- ed the locals went down to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of an inspired St. Marys squad in their second game that was played Saturday night, Each team had a total of 13 shots on the net at the end of the contest but Exeter came out on the short end of the 2-1 score as they were unable to put the puck in the net although they had nu- merous scoring chances. The St. Marys club held a 2-0 lead at the end of the second frame and Ron Lindenfield scored Exeter's lone goal in the third period with Barry Baynham help- ing out on the play.
