The Exeter club was eliminated from the Watford totd'ney by Itidgetown after they had taken a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by Steven Murley. The winners tied the game late in the first frame and then went on to record a 4-2 victory. Ron Lindenfield scored the other Exeter tally. The Exeter Legion Bantams split two games last week de- feating Lambeth 2-0 in Strathroy in Shamrock League play on Tuesday and then dropping a 4-2 decision to Ridgetown in the Watford Silver Stick Tournament last Thursday night, The locals' victory over Lam- beth brought their record to 7-5 in Shamrock League competition. SQUIRTS RECORD SHUTOUTS The Exeter Squirts recorded their second straight Shamrock League shutout last Saturday when they blanked Dorchester by a convincing 9-0 score, The week before the locals white- washed Strathroy 2-0 in one of their better showings of the sea- son. Goaltender Doug Fairbairn and Danny Brintnell have been alter- nating in the Exeter net and both players made their share of saves in the past two games, Highscoring Perry Stover and his linemates John Courtney and Paul Robinson paced the locals in the 9-0 game as Stover picked up seven markers and Robinson scored once. Steve Schroeder picked up the other Exeter goals after taking passes from Steve Harrison and John Vriese. Midgets undefea ted Go altende r Mike McLaughlin blanked the strong Lambeth crew for the first two frames and then his mates took over to score the winning goals in the final period. Chris Riddell set up both Exeter goals which were scored by Mark This Saturday the local bantam club will play in the LucanSham- rock Bantam Tournament in the B division. Lorne Haugh's crew will face Byron in the first round and will be seeking revenge for their elimination from the London First draw winners This happy foursome is the winner of the first draw in the annual O'Keefe Bonspiel held at the Exeter Curling Club Saturday. (T-A photo) Winning streak broken, Hawks bow to Port Huron Exeter minor hockey teams walked off with five Shamrock League titles last year but it ap- pears that this year things will be a little different unless some improvements are made. At the pres- ent time the local midget club is the only Exeter team that is leading its division while the pee wees, novices, bantams and juveniles are struggling. With the Shamrock schedule halfway through the local midgets, under coach Red Loader and manager Gord Baynham, are undefeated after 10 games and hold a nine-point lead over second place Strathroy. The Exeter Novice team that plays in Lu- can every Saturday afternoon is currently tied for third place with eight points on three wins, four losses and two ties while the pee wees are in second place seven points behind first place Dorchester. The Legion Bantams, who got off to a slow start, seem to be picking up and are now challeng- ing for the lead in their division. Lorne Haugh's club now has a 7-5-1 record and should be tough from now on. Frank Boyle's Exeter Juveniles re- corded a 9-7 victory over first place Byron last week and are now in third place in Shamrock League competition with three wins and five losses. The Junior Hawks, who had their long win- ning streak stopped by Port Huron last Saturday, are another local club that should prove to be a prime contender for a Shamrock championship. The Hawks, who are trying to repeat as Shamrock League champions, have been strengthened consid- erably by the addition of Bob Livermore and John Cooper from Clinton and are now in the midst of the scramble for first place with Belmont and Port Huron. Delhi 3 14 0 6 straight Shamrock League title. An unfortunate incident occur- red when Moir was refused treat- ment for his broken arm at the Port Huron Hospital. Hospital officials refused to look at the lad's arm because he was a Ca- nadian and underage and as a result Moir had to sit at the rink until the game was over. The Hawks' win was the first over the Beefeaters after losing the two previous games by scores of 4-3 and 8-3. Goalie Rick Stade was a big factor in the Exeter victory as he came up with several big saves and he was especially hot in the first period as the Hawks blanked the visitors 3-0. The lo- cals outscored Port Huron 3-1 in the second frame but the visitors came back to outscore Exeter 3-1 in the final period. Bob Livermore paced the Hawks in their seventh straight victory by scoring three goals. Linemate John Cooper added a pair for the locals while Fred Lamb and Dennis Morrissey picked up single goals. The Hawks picked up 14 of the 23 penalites that were handed out by referee Bruce McFadden. Included in the penalties were majors to Exeter's Larry Wil- lert and Bill Bourne and Frank Witliff and Jeff Billins for fight- ing in the third period. REC LEAGUE INTERESTING Only five weeks remain in the regular sched- ule of the Exeter Rec Hockey League and judging from the closeness of last week's games the closing few weeks and subsequent playoffs should be very interesting. At the beginning of the season high scoring games were quite prevalent with teams registering victories of 21-5, 17-4 and 17-12 but in recent games play has been improving and the scores have been much closer. One of the reasons for the closer scores could be that the players are getting in bet- ter condition but we feel that the improved goal- tending is also a big factor. Goaltenders Tom Glav- in, Vince Lassaline, Dick McFalls and Jim Newby have improved steadily since the opening game and are now coming up with their share of clutch saves. Graham and Graham upset the Old Timers 7-4 and the Bank Boys edged Crediton 7-5 on Thurs- day and goalies Newby of G and G and the Bankers' Vince Lassaline, both of whom have had little for- mal experience, played a big part in their team's victories. Newby displayed his best form of the sea- son in the first half of the game by blocking sev- eral oldster scoring attempts while Lassaline was a standout throughout the second tilt as he was left unprotected on several occasions in the close contest. The Bank Boys' victory over Crediton gave them a four point lead in the battle for first place while Graham and Graham's win moved them into a third place tie with the Old Timers. NATIONAL LEAGUE ALL STARS While still on the hockey beat we noticed that the National Hockey League all star selectors were thinking along the same lines as ourselves when they chose the halfway dream team. The Red Wings' high scoring Norm Ullman edged out Stan Mikita for the centre spot on the first all star team to spoil our perfect score but we called the other positions correctly. Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull, the two biggest drawing cards in the game, took right and left wing positions in the voting while Montreal's Jacques La- perierre and Pierre Pilote of Chicago were named on defense with Glenn Hall of the Black Hawks in goal. STANDINGS TO DATE: The Port Huron Beefeaters ended the Exeter Hawks winning streak at seven games when they defeated the locals 10-4 in a wild Shamrock League tilt in Port Huron last Saturday night. The U.S. sextet gained a weekend split with the Hawks as Earl Wagner's charges whipped Port Huron before the largest home crowd of the season Friday night. With six games remaining in the regular schedule, the locals are still in third place, five points behind second place Bel- mont and seven points in back of the leaders. The Hawks have finished with Port Huron but have two games left with Belmont, two with sixth place Point Ed- ward and one each against Delhi and Strathroy. The penalty filled Saturday night game was close until the third period with the Hawks hold- ing a 1-0 lead in the first period on Bill Chipchase's first of two goals. The locals opened the scoring in each of the first two frames but Port Huron outscor- ed the Exeter club 2-1 in each period and came up with six more in the final 20 minutes. Seventeen penalties were hand- ed out by referee Norm Foster with the locals picking up 12 including a game misconduct to Dennis Morrissey in the first period and a match penalty to forward Otto Smale, in the third period. The Chipchase, Cooper and Livermore line looked after the scoring in the game with Chip- chase and Cooper each scoring twice. The locals lost hustling left winger Bob Moir for the rest of the season when he suffered a broken arm in a second period collision. Moir who plays on the Hawks' second line with Dennis Morrissey and Ron Broderick, has been picking his share of goals in the past few games and his loss will be felt by the Hawks who are looking for their second Port Huron . . . . Two draws were held during the day long competition with the Art Clarke rink winning the nine o'clock draw and Harvey Pollen's foursome coming out on top of the 11 o'clock draw. Members of the Clarke rink who won three straight games were Helen W e bbe r, Archie Etherington and Dorothy Prout while Pollen's rink was made up of Marg Murley, Bob Jeffrey and Delores Shapton. Mac Hodgert's foursome of Barb Elliot, Walter McBride and Betty Clarke finished in the run- nerup position behind Clarke with a 2-1 record while third place fell to the Alvin Pym rink of Jean liodgert, Gus Gregus and Alma Etherington. Second place in the 11 o'clock draw went to Sandy Elliot and his rink of Ellen Knight, Gil Burrows and Bette Reid while the Ray Morley foursome placed third. Bank boys increase lead in Rec league The Bank Boys increased their first place lead to four points with a 7-5 Rec League victory over second place Crediton. The league leaders now have 15 points while Crediton has 11. In Thurs- days other game Graham and Graham defeated the Old Timers 7-4 and are new tied with the oldsters for third place with five points each. Jim MacDonald and F r ank Clark led G and G in the scoring department with two goals each in the first game of the evening while ,Tack Glover, Don Graham and Andy Crornerty added single- tons. The usually shorthanded LondOri crew were out in full force for the game and had little trouble coming up with the win as the Old Tinier sheeting was a bit erratic. Red Loader paced the oldsters with a pair of markers while Ron Horn and defenseman Dick Ben- nett added one each. The Bank Boys ekedout a close 7-5 win over a strong Crediton squad behind the strong goal- tending of Vince L ass aline. Franklin Melville B o yl e and Larry Stire led the winners with a pair of markers with Jim Rus- sell, Pete McFalls and Lloyd Moore picking up singletons. Bob Morrissey was the big gun for Crediton as he potted two goals while single goals came off the sticks of boug Galloway, Pat McKeever and Stall LOVie4 This Thursday night sees the Old Timers and Crediton tangling at eight o'clock with the Sank Boys meeting Graham and Gra- ham in the second game at nine.
