The Exeter Ladies. C u rl ing
Club has started, its second draw
and if the first week is any in-
dication the three top finishers
who entered the first draw play-
offs will find competition in the
second draw a lot tougher. First
draw champion Ellen Knight who
was the Tuesday afternoon leader
was defeated 11-9 by Helen Web-
ber in the first round of the sec-
ond draw last Tuesday while
Pauline Simmons and Audrey Mc-
Donald also went down to defeat
in the first week of action,
Wednesday winner Simmons
was defeated 7- 5 by Jean Weber
while Audrey McDonald who was
the Thursday representative
after she edged out Barb Elliot
in a playoff, was trounced 11-5
by the Helen Burton rink last
Thursday.
In other Tuesday afternoon ac-
tion Thora Payne edged Mary
Fisher 7-4 and Willa Wuerth
edged Helen Frayne 6-5 while
Bernice Cann defeated Dorothy
Prout by a 10-5 score,
On Wednesday night Helen
Jermyn and Edna Busche re-
corded identical 9-4 victories
over Dorothy Marks and Edith
Boyle while Norma Marshall de-
feated Marilyn Marshall 8-4.

erington 10-0, Barb Elliot de-
feated Helen Mickle 10-8 and

people what they look like. (T-A photo)
In a 20-mile race, a man would
win over a horse because of his
endurance,
Hawks win five straight
but the club appeared listless in
the tilt and had to come up with
two goals in the third frame to
win their ninth game of the year.
The Hawks led 1-0 at the end
of the first period as Bob Liver-
more scored at the 3:45 mark
and Bob Moir's goal at 13:05 of
the middle stanza gave the home-
sters a 2-0 bulge over the hard
working Mount Brydges crew.
Dennis Morrissey took passes
from linemates Ron Broderick
and Bob Moir to give the Hawks
a 3-0 lead at 18 seconds of the
final frame but the visitors'
Garry Rycraft beat Rick Stade
in the Exeter net at the 3:38
mark to cut the Exeter lead to
3-1,
Bill Chipchase, who has been
flying of late, came up with the
insurance marker just seconds
after the first Mount Brydges
goal to put the game on ice for
the locals. Bob Livermore and
John Cooper drew assists on the
marker.
With nine games remaining in
the regular schedule, the Hawks
still have a good chance of catch-
ing the front running Belmont
club, The locals have two games
left against Belmont, Port Huron,
Point Edward and Strathroy and
have one remaining game with
the last place Delhi Rockets.

The Exeter Junior Hawks mov-
ed a bit closer to first place in
the Shamrock Junior D League
last weekend when they posted
successive victories over Mount
Brydges and Delhi. The locals
who defeated Mount Brydges 4-1
in Exeter on Friday night and
trounced Delhi 6-2 in Delhi on
Sunday afternoon, extended their
unbeaten streak to five as they
moved to within three points of
the second place Port Huron
Beefeaters. The Belmont Hatters
still lead the league with 26
points, six more than the third
place Hawks.
Bob Moir, who has been moved
to left wing after starting the
year at center, rapped in four
goals to lead the Hawks in their
Sunday win in Delhi. The lanky
Moir scored twice in each of the
first two frames as the locals
brought their record to 10-5.
The Hawks held a 2-0 lead at
the end of the first stanza and
increased their bulge to 5-2 at
the end of the second as Moir
scored twice and Bob Livermore
added a singleton. Scott Burton
completed the scoring with his
fourth goal of the season in the
third frame.
Goaltender Rick Stade turned
in another fine performance in the
Exeter cage as the Rockets who
have only won two games showed
a lot of improvement over the
last time the two clubs met.
A crowd of 246 was on hand
Friday night as the Hawks de-
feated Mount Brydges for the
fourth time 4-1. In the previous
three meetings the locals had
little trouble with the visitors de-
feating them 8-6, 10-4 and 9-1
PEE WEES
The Exeter Pee Wees gained
sweet revenge for a 4-1 defeat
at the hands of Dorchester by
trouncing the same Dorchester
club by a '7-2 score in Ingersoll
on Tuesday night. The Southern
club had little trouble with the
local last Wednesday but Exeter
came up with a solid team effort
on Tuesday night as seven players
shared in the scoring.
The locals who now boast a
6-2-2 record led 5-0 at the end
of the first period and 6-1 at
the end of the second and then
held on to give the strong Dor-
chester crew their initial loss of
the season.
Larry Davies, Russ Earring-
tion, Pete Glover, Randy Tieman
and Brad Klumpp scored Exeter
goals in the first frame while
Barry Smithers and Peter Klein-
stiver scored in the second and
third period respectively.
The two Dorchester goals came
on Exeter penalty and a deflec-
tion off a defenseman's leg.

Last year the Exeter Legion Bantams came
close to winning the Ontario title before losing out
to a tough Huntsville crew in a two-game total goal
final series and this season the club has joined the
midget classification and looks like a serious con-
tender for the championship. The strong Exeter
Midgets, who last year won Shamrock League and
WOAA titles before entering Ontario Minor Hockey
Association play, are off to a very fine start this
year and have yet to be beaten by Shamrock League
opposition. The locals have won nine games this sea-
son and have lost one. The club dropped a 6-5 de-
cision to Stratford in an exhibition game for its only
setback of the season so far and currently has a
7-0 record in Shamrock League play.
Red Loader, who is no stranger to area hockey
followers, is the coach of the midget squad while
Gard Baynham handles the managerial duties for
the club. Loader is one of the most competent
coaches in the district with a great deal of experience
and knowledge of the game behind him and because
of this and the fact that he has been with the team
for the last three seasons, the locals could be in for
a big year.
The players on the midget roster represent
four different communities with one player from
Dashwood, four from Hensall, two from Grand Bend
and seven from Exeter on the squad. Four players
have joined the club since last year.
Loader has three well balanced forward lines
that have scored 52 goals so far with the John Load-
er, Bill Fairbairn, Jim Hayter line the most produc-
tive although the Pete Lawson line is not far behind.
Lawson's line of Mike Hoy and Grant Walker have
notched 22 goals while the Loader unit has hit for
24 markers. The club's third attacking unit is made
up of Barry Baynham, Bill Taylor and Barry Clarke.
The defensive corps is made up of Bruce For-
rest, Leo Desjardine, Randy Weber and Ron Durand
while the goaltending is in the capable hands of
Glenn Stire, Stire, who came up through the Exeter
minor ranks, has several shutouts to his credit and
has been having an outstanding season in the Exeter
net.
Local fans will have the opportunity to see
the midgets as well as the bantams and pee wees in
action next Wednesday night when they face Huron
Heights at the Exeter Arena.
DART GAME POPULAR
The Legion Mixed Dart League is in its first
year of operation and is rapidly becoming a popular
pastime during the winter months. A total of 32
players participate in the eight-team loop that op-
erates every Fridai evening at the local Legion Hall.
Each teani'm the'league consists of two ladies
and two men"-Wlid" play 'five games during the eve-
ning. The eight teams in the league are the Blue
Birds, Itchy Four, Cleaners, Champs, Legionnaires,
Featherflights, Plumbers and Sharpshooters. At pres-
ent Jake and Verdun Lindenfield and Garnet and
Bernice Shipman of the Plumbers are leading the
league but they are being followed very closely by
Olive and NOttli Ferguson and Anne and Walter
Romaniuk of the Sharpshooters.
At the end of the season, which will be some
time in March, the leading teams and individuals
will receive various awards at a banquet.
RUSTLINGS — The various bowling leagues
got back into action last week and most of thekeg-
lers were a little rusty as only three came up with
300 games. Pete Coburn of the Fairlanes had the
big game of the week with 312 while Pete McFalls
of the league leading Russ' Billiards came up with
310 and Art Finlayson of the Seaforth Tigers rolled
309 . . Don't forget the minor hockey promotion
this Saturday. Exeter minor hockey players will be
around town selling hot seats for one dollar. The
proceeds from these hot seats, which really work,
will go to finance Minor Hockey Night . . Exeter's
Itchy Six still hold a wide margin over Clinton
Cloud 9 in the battle for first place in the Men's
Intertown Bowling League . . . Those people who
don't like the cold weather will be happy to hear
that spring training will soon be opening in Florida
and Arizona, a sure sign that the winter is getting
Shorter . . . The Bank Boys, who are currently in
first place in the Exeter Rec Hockey League, scored
17 goals last week and have now scored 101 goals
so far this season . . . Barring serious injury Bobby
Hull should be a sure bet to set a new NHL
scoring mark this season. Chicago's blond speedster
has scored 32 goals in the 30 games that he has
played and needs only 18 more markers in the
Hawks' remaining 36 games in order to tie the rec-
ord of 50 which he holds along with Maurice Richard
and Bernie Geoffrion.

Refills
The Exeter Midgets extended
their Shamrock League unbeaten
streak to seven games last Wed-
nesday night as they blanked Dor-
chester '7-0 behind the steady
goaltending of Glenn Stire. In the
two other games of the triple-
header the Legion Bantams de-
feated Dorchester 5-1 while the
pee wees lost 4-1.
The powerful Exeter club had
little trouble with the visitors
in the third game of the evening
as they led 2-0 at the end of the
first period, 5-0 at the end of the
second and scored two more un-
answered markers in the final
frame.
Grant Walker and Pete Lawson
paced the locals by scoring a
pair of goals each while Jim
Hayter, Leo Desjardine and Bill
Taylor picked up singletons.
The locals were assessed with
six of the seven minor penalties
that were handed out during the
contest.
The Exeter Legion Bantams
scored a pair of markers in the
first and third periods to defeat
Dorchester 5-1 in the middle
game of the evening. Goalie Mike
McLaughlin allowed the visitor's
only goal in the second period.
The Dorchester goal cut Exeter's
lead of one goal but the locals
went on to score three unanswer-
ed goals to win their third straight
game.
Larry Haugh fired two goals to
lead the locals in that department
while Bruce Fuicher, Chris Rid-
dell and Don Farrell contributed
a goal each to the Exeter cause.
The Dorchester Pee Wees
proved too much for the locals
in the first game as they scored
three times in the final frame to
post a 4-1 victory.
The two clubs traded first
period goals as Brian Crozier
scored at the ten minute mark
to give the visitors a 1-0 bulge.
Larry Davies took a pass from
Peter Glover to pull the locals
even just before the period ended
but that was the extent of the Ex-
eter attack as the second frame
was scoreless and Dorchester
registered three times in the
final stanza.
Referee Clarence Boyle handed
out six penalties during the con-
test with each club picking up
three minors.
The next Shamrock L e a g u e
tripieheader will take place next
Wednesday night, the 19th, when
Huron Heights will supply the op-
position,

Shamrocks are
back in play
After a layoff which lasted
over three weeks, the Lucan-
Merton Combines finally got
back into action by registering
a 7-5 win over Petrolia last Fri-
day night in Lucan. Because of
the disbanding of the Forest
Lakesides the area Intermediate
B loop was cut down to only two
teams and the league almost
folded but the Seaforth Towners
have entered and the league is
now back to three teams.
The Combines were forced to
come from behind on Friday as
the visitors built up a 3-2 first
period lead but Ernie Little
blanked the visitors in the middle
period and Don Urbshott scored
his first of three goals to tie the
score at 3-3. The Combines turn-
ed on the power in the third
frame, however, and outscored
the Royals 4-2 to come up with
the victory.
Urbshott and Dusty Aldis led
the Combines in the goal scoring
department with three each while
Bill Neil scored a single goal
in the first period to give the
Lucan-Ilderton squad a short liv-
ed 2-1 lead.
Ira Downer led the losers with
a hat trick while single goals
came off the sticks of Reg Mul-
holland and Doug Caley.
Because of the small number
of league games, the Combines
will play two exhibition tilts this
weekend meeting the Stratford
All-stars in Lucan Friday night
and then travelling to St. Marys
on Saturday to tangle with the
Lincolns of the 011A Central
Junior B league.
