NORMAN LONG As everyone knows, there are Public speaking contests held at SHDHS each year for every grade. Well, this year is no exception. The Grade 9 contest was held Wednesday, Dec. 8. For the girls Donna Dickey placed first, speak- ing on "Safety on the Highways". Diane Smith was second, choos- ing "Career Opportunities for High School Graduates". Paula Barrett placed third, speaking on, "Is Athletic Training a Waste of Time?" For the boys, Ken Johns placed first, taking "Huron County" as his subject. Paul Charretteplac- ed second, speaking on "Modern Dances"and Bruce Fulcher placed third, speaking on "A Sense of Humour". The overall winner was Donna Dickey. All the speakers were excellent and it was a very hard task for the judges to pick winners. Con- gratulations to all the winners and good luck in your future speaking efforts and also a note of thanks to the judges. The Grade 11 speaking contest will be held on Friday, Dec. 17. The Grade 10 contest was held Wednesday, Dec, 15. Many people believe that it is rather "sissy" to compete in public speaking contests. This is not so, It is very good ex- perience and prepares a person for life, so if your child is thus inclined, encourage, not discour- age him. Our basketball teams travelled BY RICHARD TURKHE1M The Grade 10 agriculture class under the supervision of Mr. B. Perry, enjoyed a bus trip to the Royal Winter Fair at Toronto, on Friday, November 12. Included in this trip was every interesting and informative tour of the J. M. Schneider meat pack- ing plant at Kitchener. The stu- dents toured the large 12 acre plant from one end to the other viewing the many offices with their busy secretaries, accoun- tants, and teletype machines tak- ing invoices from places such as Timmins and Montreal. Next the students toured the cold storage rooms where the slaughtered meats were kept. A few hours later this meat is taken and processed and then packaged. The meats were then shipped out, and delivered right to your own local store. Schneider's not only sell meats, but also handle cheese eggs, and large quantities of lard and shortening. After ending our tour of the plant at 11;45 a.m. we promptly boarded the bus and left for the Program 5' in Stratford will open its doors for new trainees on Monday, January 10, 1966 and applications are being accepted now for enrolment. Several new courses are be- ing offered next year in addition to those already sponsored by the local Board of Education. One of the new courses is the I.B.M. Key-Punch operators course. A new I.B.M. Key-punch machine has been installed in the class- rooms of Program 5 along with four Selectric Typewriters with simulated key-boards for addi- tional practice periods. Another new course is the Waiter-Waitress course which is designed to teach the trainees to not only be adept in restaurant work but also give them their first step towards a managerial position. An Electric Component Assemblers course is being in- troduced to qualify trainees for well-paying jobs in electric motor manufacturing plants. The Welding course which started in September is full but a new course in this skill will Mrs. Leonard LoVell was ad- mitted Wednesday to South Huron Hospital, Exeter, for surgery. Royal Winter Fair arriving there at about 1:15 p.m. For 3 1/2 hours the boys toured the Royal Winter finding of spe- cial interest the large exhibits of cattle, horses, swine and sheep from all over Canada and the world. Also of great interest were the large meat exhibits which depicted c at t 1 e beasts, sheep, and swine cut into various cuts of meat, and then packaged ready for the consumer. Spectacular floral displays fil- ling one whole area of the colli- seum attracted many horticul- turalists as well as the passer- by. The temptingly-delicious aro- ma of fruits and vegetables also added greatly to the beautiful surroundings of the Fair. Modern farm machinery caught the eye of many of our group, especially the tractors with their full cushioned seats, which were very comfortable to rest in. Finally it was time to leave and the students boarded the bus for home, happy with the day well spent. be opening on January 10 also along with the skill courses in Drafting and Machine Shop.
